I get your drift... but I think brutal here just means "harsh" or "unrelenting" not in a negative way, but rather in stark contrast to the somewhat sanitized everyday world. Going to the end of the driveway to get the mail and then finding what was once a beautiful, graceful deer being devoured by "billions" of maggots is certainly not the average experience of most kids I know.
