juán García Esquieve... A great master!!! Ilove his music Amazing!!! thanksfor loving his music!!! One of those greats musicians, dont u think??? He is from Veracruz México, mucha muchacha!!!
There truly isn't anything more hip that the music of Esquivel, so well illustrated with his monster track Mucha Muchacha, that insightful cha-cha big band tune...right up there with tunes like Mambo Italiano. Esquivel must be grinning big time knowing that someone was so moved & grooved by his music to make this video. Right on, Funktuall!!
@funktuall Ironically, Esquivel was much more popular in the U.S. than in his native Mexico. I speak Spanish well and have worked on any music documentaries, so someday I may go to Mexico City in search of all things Esquivel... This is a brilliant video man, such a perfect intro to Esquivel's genius music and your enthusiasm is impressive. This video could have been played at Juan Esquivel's memorial or at any gathering to celebrate his music. Cheers! H.M.
Thank you so much for this excellent video!! I'm sending this one to people that I am trying to explain my obsession with Esquivel, tiki, longe, exotica, bachelor pad music. I've been collecting this genre of music(on LPs) for about 35 years. Recent crate digging and eBay buys have landed me a few Esquivel LPs and some awesome Korla Pandit(blue vinyl on Fantasy label). By far, Esquivel was the real master of the big band exotica and wacky fun music! Thanks for the video!!!!
this is too cool :D I've listened to Esquivel for many years now and it is surprising that most folks are clueless as to who he is and what he did...This video is way cool and informative too :D Thanks man! :D
Great Man! Esquivel Rules! what a music he compose at the time!! I grew up with influence of this kind of music, my great uncle composed some Cha Cha Cha music.
Love your vid. It's great that other young people are digging Esquivel music, and your enthusiasm for it really shows. A few things: First, as someone else said, it's pronounced "es-kuh-vel," not "es-kwuh-vel." Two, thanks for the Pizzacto 5 line; I'd never heard of them, but I'm checking them out thanks to you. Lastly, a guy named Franz got you into JGE when you were in college in Albany? I'm from Albany! What school, where are you now, and who's Franz?
Nice pick Funk! I've been listening to Esquivel since I came across the CD Space-Age Bachelor Pad Music back in 1994. And as for when you'd listen to it? I say any time is a good time for Esquivel.
This is what music is all about, making it sound enjoyable for others to enjoy. Never heard of Esquivel, but for some reason I can see him being classified in the same genre as Hugo Montenegro.
This is why i like your videos, extremely informative, I'm 23 and a lot of the music you mention, I've heard but never truly knew the genius behind it all and etc. Thanks man! I feel like I will be walking away with a degree in music hehehe
I don't know if I'm right, but I might have heard one of these in the tv series 'Mad Men'. I could be wrong, though. Anyway, it's an interesting series, so you might want to check it out.
Interesting music, I never thought I would get interested in music from that era. You got me there. It's cool to heat how this guy somehow tells stories with this instrumental music.
To truly appreciate his advanced recording techniques and music, you need to park your ass on the sofa dead center between two quality speakers driven by a tube amplifier. Put your feet up and enjoy a cool refreshing beverage of your choice.
I have his "Living Stereo" RCA Victor release,
Other Worlds Other Sounds on vinyl.
Some of his works have been reissued on CD in recent years so check him out.
the term "lounge music" refers to the places you'd generally hear this type of music back in the day, ie. the lounges of hotels and bars.
We think of it in a deragatory view unfortunately, kinda like elevator "muzak", but as Mr. Funktual and Mr. Esquivel have shown... good music is everywhere!
Look up "Muzak" on wikipedia. It's a COMPANY. And there's some crazy stuff about subliminal programming, and Ted Nugent trying to buy the company specifically to shut it down!
YO, was digging through the old music and i remember a song from a while back "Tried by 12" by The East Flatbush Project if you're familiar with the song, what did they sample!? lol Thanks funktuall! :) oh haha and that first song, "mini skirt" pretty cool haha
Esquivel!
