Missing NPCs from Guile's stage is unforgivable. The SNES version suffers horrid slowdown - simply an unplayable version, which only won battles in magazine photo comparisons. We all migrated to Sega for this classic when we actually wanted to play the game at home. Needless to say arcade beats both versions.
Back when I was a Nintendo fanboy, I criticized the Genesis version. However, now that I'm reliving those days, I personally liked the Genesis version MUCH better. It just feels like a much more accurate rendition of the arcade, especially in the music and sound. The SNES version's sound fx always annoyed be for sounding NOTHING like the arcade. And I also was irritated at why they chose to use so many synthesized horns on EVERY stage's music on the SNES version.
the snes had better quality voices but they were shortened, the genesis had the richt length voices but they,re really scratchy.
the graphics are extraordinairy simmilar.it,s hard to tell any real difference except for the ryu stage with the moon in the background, not seen in the snes version.
the biggest shame i can imagine is why the snes version has no arcade intro will the genesis version does have it.
i prefer the music on the snes over the genesis version.
I think it's important to note that this wasn't a simultaneous release. The SNES version was released prior to the Genesis version, which seemed unbelievable because the Genesis version of CE was announced long before the idea of making Hyper Fighting for SNES. On top of that, the Genesis version was a bigger cart (24 Mbit to 20) so they were able to add a few features that didn't make it to the SNES version.
But the real issue is does the game play well, and both succeed.
I'd have to hand this one over to SNES simply for nostalgic reasons, since this was the first version I've played. I never played the Genesis version so I can't say much. However, judging from the sound effects of the Genesis, the characters sound like they need some Sucrets because their voices are just scratchy.
Yup, Megadrive's controller shined on this one, especially the six buttoned version of that. MD's D-pad is one of the best D-pad's ever... Sega does blast processing, and does what nintendon't. xD
This is were the so called blast processing shows. Stuff move much faster along the screen on the genesis than the snes. Genesis is much better for fast moving objects
@Animation1111 The animation for both versions were pretty much a wash. Plus, both games had ridiculous speed settings, up to a nearly unplayable 10 stars.
The real advantages of the Genesis version were the extras. Capcom sort of rushed Turbo, which was great by all accounts, but it didn't have some things that Special CE had like the arcade attract screen, no need to punch in a code to get upper speed settings, and the tournament mode. The Genesis version was 24-Mbit, compared to SNES 20.
Both versions are great, really playable. It's just a shame the Genesis had way inferior sound and was in mono, as opposed to stereo sound and rich symphonic music on the SNES. But hey, the Genny is just a bit faster, so....
Honestly, folks, if you love 16-bit gaming, both the SNES and the Genesis are amazing, classic consoles with a slew of wonderful games each. Just get both consoles. They both have advantages and drawbacks, but it's a win - win.
@wildsmiley Agree some games are better on SNES and other games are better on Sega Genesis or Mega Drive. Even the Turbografx-16 had a great Street Fighter port but only release in Japan.
@wildsmiley The megadrive has excellent stereo sound, get a mk 1 megadrive connect it to your hifi through the headphone jack, put in streets of rage and you'll hear the best 16 bit music ever :)
The genesis version actually has better graphics. It's sharper like all of there games. Snes has always had a terrible softening technique they used for all there games. I will take crisp images over soft and overly colorful images. Also there is background images missing from the snes version, plus I always hated that sack of potatoes"sound that strong kicks made on the snes. Genesis voices are crap and that's obvious but I always preferred the sega version as it felt more true to the arcade.
@Mosquit you get the greates fighting controller ever made - the sega genesis 6 button controller. After this game out they were standard controllers anyway
@TheDukeljk iam ony asking u cunt of fucking moron.and yes its SUUUUUUCK when must buy a 6 button pad....dont aswer u birainlessuidiot..aim only askin.....dammit.

For me Genesis version plays better then SNES ( using the 6 buttons controller, and not considering 3DO version), but the SNES version has some awesome music! I mean, listen to the char selection theme, it is just awesome. So awesome that in the 15th An Edition, for XBOX and PS2, I am pretty sure the arranged version for this theme is based on SNES version.
PC engine version looks great too, and US Gold...well, they made tons of shit
the genesis version looks and plays a lot better. look at ryu's stage, theres bats flying in the background, the colors are so much better, and the moon out. the genesis version plays better because of sega's 6 button controller and 6 button arcade stick.
I just spent like 3-4 minutes editing that last comment because when I would try to submit it it kept saying "Error... please try again." The only time I've seen this specific error is when you put like WEBSITE(dot)COM except obviously a period instead of (dot). This is better than it used to be when comments would just grey out and you couldn't copy your text.. you just lost it. But no, I just had to refresh.
I had both growing up. I always preferred the SNES version for the button layout and the fact that it looked better and sounded better.
If you want it the most like the arcade... take the graphics and voices of the SNES one and the MUSIC of the genesis. Genesis isn't known for great music but it's because people didn't know how to utilize FM synth chips. Japanese dev's like Capcom and Konami did. But the main thing is that the arcade version used FM synth so the Gen's music is near identical.
Also, I just wanted to note that the Genesis version has it's own nice look. Obviously the SNES has more colors and better graphics and sound in general.. the Genesis one has much more contrast (mostly due to the limited palette). The one striking difference though is in Balrog's stage. I know these stages graphics by heart.. down to minute details. I never noticed the stars in Balrog's stage and how vibrant they are. Seriously, I guarantee you didn't notice. Check that shit.
Also, one more quick comment. I had to post this so that I could prevent a flame war over it. And I quote "I always preferred the SNES version for the button layout" - me. I realize that this is blasphemy to SF2 players. Who knows though, maybe someone in here liked the SNES setup. I know some people would make the shoulder buttons medium and make high A/X but I liked the defaults. The six button Genesis was awesome but everyone only had 1 leaving Pl.2 with 3 buttons and start to alt. punch/kick
the snes version was near arcade perfect port. i remember playing the snes version for a couple of weeks and going to the genesis verison. lets just say i hanker for the snes version so bad after that..lol
first thing i noticed was the static sounds that came out of the characters on the genesis version. mind you i also was force to play it with the 3 button genesis controller too..lol horrible experience.
I can't believe there are people that would pick the MegaDrive version over the SNES version. There IS no comparison. The SNES is undeniably better from every perspective - graphics, sound, fanboy.

@kaox44 The Gen version does have a few edges. A few backgrounds have more animation, such as the moon in Ryu's stage. Plus, the 6-button controller is identical to the controls of the arcade. I'm going to have to go with the SNES version, but mainly because they did the backgrounds better on most of the stages (especially in Ryu's level) and the voices. They're garbled big time on the Genesis. As for music, I'd have to declare it a tie. I'm impressed with some of the Genesis themes, especially Guile's!
i felt cheated as a kid when i got to play the sega version, and me and friends have made fun of it ever since lol, poor thing. especially now if you play the turbo version on snes vs this one lol, ooh boy.
@Richterbelmont365 Speed is better on Megadrive, Music is better on megadrive it's more similar to the arcade, voices I prefer it on SNES and colours too, I think it's a tie.
@SegaFanatic5188 genesis version is just nothing but noise. i use to often find people building arcade cabinets back when i was a kid and using the snes version since it was closer to the arcade.
@rahnyc4 The arcade version uses a YM2151 to produce it's sound. The Genesis uses a YM2612. Both are very similar FM synthesizer chips that sound rather alike. The arcade however has a few more channels to allow for more instruments and what not. They still however sound quite similar, especially when you look at the Beta for the Genesis version.
SNES version is better. The voices for the characters are scratchy and the sound isn't quite as good. The colors are more vibrant in the SNES version.

there is a six button controller for the sega genesis. i own both snes and genesis versions of the game but me and my brother always play the genesis version just cuz of the arcade style six button controllers. genesis owns snes on this game, gameplay wise.
the only reason people said the snes version was better is simple.... Snes had it first, so every one ran out and got it, and back in the day people just played what they had and was happy with there port.
10 years or so later, people play both version, and imo, the genesis version plays closer to the arcade, and even the sound was closer, just played at a lower sample rate. snes games always sounded like some sort of ehco.
You are the first person to bring this up so it's obviously not that big a deal?! All over the place not sure where you got that from! I have recorded all the games at (60FPS) then produce the video in Windows Movie Maker which puts down the playback to 30FPS if there is any slowdown its to do with the game itself.
Nice list of comparisons. I caught one extra thing in Balrog's stage, though. In the Genesis version, some of the neons signs don't fade and glow like in the SNES. "Golden Goose" is the clearest example.
When playing the Genesis version on the Gen-X Dual Station, Balrog's (Boxer) sprite is very glitchy, and the same goes for Sagat. I'm not sure if it's the system, or if it is the game making this happen.
I'm assuming that the graphical issues when playing this game on the Gen-X are caused by the game not being emulated properly. Other games such as Samurai Shodown and Sonic 1 have some errors in the graphics. Art of Fighting, MK1, MK2 and Shaq-Fu play perfectly as if you were playing on the original Genesis, with no graphical issues. When there are too many sprites on the screen, a game can slow down, and make the control become unresponsive until you shut the system off then turn it back on.

SNES version looked better, but I feel the Genesis played better..especially with the six button pad.

When playing the Genesis version on the Gen-X Dual Station, Balrog's (Boxer) sprite is very glitchy, and the same goes for Sagat. I'm not sure if it's the system, or if it is the game making this happen.

Buy an original system and then, you can judge.
