MS: Why did you decide to perform the Final from the 5th Symphony?
DS: Well, because it was a meeting of American peace supporters, and I erm... I must say, I dont know why, erm... I thought why dont I play a Scherzo from the 5th Symphony
DS: From my 5th symphony. Well it was very... it all took place in a large hall, there were quite a lot of listeners, consisting of American peace-fighters. They made speeches and our delegates as well. Fadeev, as I remember, spoke, so did USA representatives And then
DS: No, there wasnt any concert actually, it just came to someones mind, it wasnt me really, it came to someones mind that it would be nice if I, that is Shostakovich the composer, if I played something from my compositions. I thought a bit and performed a Scherzo from my 5th Symphony, from MY symphony!

Op. 145a is only one of many remarkable master pieces by Shostakovich. Even, when I conducted this piece 2007 in Chabarovsk, I could not stop my tears running down the tuxedo during the performance. This is music of deepest emotion, a present of D. S. to all people of the world with human sensations.
Today I heard this work (suite on poems of Michelangelo, opus 145a, but for orchestra. The RPhO played under the conductor Maxim Shostakovich, son of the composer, who also did the worldpremiere in 1975, after the death of his father.
After the interlude tonight the RPhO (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) played the 10th symphony of Shostakovich. It was a very beautiful and remarkable concert!
Can anyone tell me who the singer is at the end?

I know how you feel - shostakovich's music is deeply expressive - remarkably so for a twentieth century composer.
