I had one that did not boot when the hard drive was out telling me it needed it for the firmware/ dashboard/ or os.. whatever you want to call it.. also even systems like PS3 need the hard drive for the os... its a method used often.

Are Allen Wrenches and Torx Wrenches the same thing? I used a knife to get the outer casing off but you need to get the second set of screws off to get the hard drive out. I don't have a Torx Wrench but the the screws look like Hex screws so I used an Allen Wrench. The only problem was that the 2.5(size) is too big and the 2 is too small. Do you have to use a Torx Wrench to unscrew the screws?

It has to be formatted specifically for the 360 or the 360 will not recognize it. It also needs to be one of the sizes that microsoft uses. To format it, use a program called HDDhacker 1.3.0.

Guys just a reminder that,if you buy the non retail microsoft drives.Make sure the ebay seller is selling you a drive that is backwards playable with original xbox games,because most drives on ebay won't let you play xbox 1 games.I have a lot of xbox 1 games so I needed a drive that can play them too.

the whole void the warranty is utter nonsense created by manufacturers to scare people with no knowledge and Microsoft cannot ban u for using a 3rd party drive. It's just a regular 2.5 laptop drive. Just make sure specs are similar. U only change the capacity and rpm. Rpm might be important. Don't fall for the void the warranty thing. Microsoft just wants more money out of u.
