Over the 5 year jump, they get divorced. Marc Cherry said something tragic happened to their relationship which means one of them probably cheated on the other or Mike went back on drugs. Now they are both sharing custody of their son, MJ. I can almost bet though that by the time the whole series ends, Mike and Susan will be back together.
