I'm not surprised and it really doesn't bother me. Baseball players have been taking drugs for decades. Amphetamines were prevalent in baseball in the fifties and sixties. If players has access to steriods in those days I'm sure they would have taken them then too. I call it sports medicine. That being said I would never take them because they do have unfavorable side effects. I've seen a lot of people experience them.

Well, you're certainly right about how players in the 50s, 60s, etc. would've taken steroids if they had access to them back in those days, because nobody knew of the dangerous long-term consequences of them back in those days. In fact, there were some players who experimented with steroids in the late 60s/early 70s, but steroids certainly weren't as widespread in baseball then as they were in throughout the 90s. Also worth pointing out that baseball had a cocaine scandal in the 80s.

Even before the steroids era, players were always trying to find ways to gain an edge, legal or otherwise; for instance, George Brett used too much pine tar on his bat and didn't get caught until Billy Martin made an issue out of it.
