I am 45, and up until my own mother died 6 years ago I only came across her grandpa's gravestone for the 1st time. He was 38 and left a wife and 6 children behind. They were forbidden to mention the tragedy. This sentiment passed on to my mums generation, so sore was this disaster felt for decades after, the last orphan has passed away in recent days, a wonderful lady. The saddest of tragedies ever, hopefully they will not be forgotten by us.To my lost great-grandfather, god bless your memory.

My paternal grandfather lost his brother, Donald MacLeod of 10 Murray Court, Stornoway in this disaster. His parents thereafter forbade him from ever sailing/fishing again. The effects of their grief and this restriction were too great for him, and he went to Glasgow to work in the shipyards, save some money, and ultimately emigrate here to Canada. Ultimately he settled in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island...which has tremendous resemblance to Stornoway. Scotland never left his heart.
My paternal grandmother, Marion Macaulay emmigrated from Lewis in 1911 to the Canadian prairies. She too lost 3 brothers in the Great War but not on the Iolaire. Such tragic times. She never did talk much of home and now I can understand why. I have discovered so much history of Bernara and the Isles through a wonderful site hebrideanconnections. This is where I first learned of the Iolaire Disaster.
Well done JP, you've managed to evoke the emotion in your video that is perhaps missing from Iolaire websites. Alan Macleod would have been my great uncle had he survived, his body was never found. My wee slideshow is a tribute to him, and all the others lost.

Here are the lyrics to the song "Reubadh an Iolaire", being sung in the video by the lovely Cathy-Ann MacPhee from Barra:
'S binn sheinn i, a chailin
an-raoir ann an Leòdhas
i fuineadh arain
le cridhe làn sòlas
air choinneamh a leannain
a' tighinn air fòrladh
tighinn dhachaidh thuic tèarainte
fear a gràidh

tha 'n cogadh nist thairis
's tha a' bhuaidh leis na fiurain
tha an nochd ri tighinn dhachaidh
tha an Iolaire gan giùlain
chuir i mòine mun teine
's an coire le bùrn air
ghràidh chadal cha téidear
gus an lò

o cluinn oirre séideadh
's ràn buairte na doimhne
o 's mairg tha mo chreubhag
aig muir leis an oidhche seo
cath ri muir beucach
sgaoil iolaire do sgiathaibh
's greas lem ghràidh

ri 'g éirigh tha 'n latha
's ri tuiteam tha 'n dòchas
air an t-sleamhraidh tha 'n coire
ri piobaireachd brònach
sguir i dhol chun an dorais
's air an teine cur mòine
cluinn cruaidh-fhead na gaoithe
a' caoidh, a' caoidh

goirt ghuil i, a chailin
moch mhadainn a-màireach
nuair fhuair i san fheamainn
a leannain 's e bàthte
gun bhrògan mu chasan
mar chaidh air an t-snàmh e
sin chrom agus phòg i
a bhilean fuar

bàthte fo sgiathaibh tha h-àlach
o na Hearadh tha tuireadh
gu ruig Nis nam fear bàna
o nach tug thu dhuinn beò iad
a chuan, thoir dhuinn bàthte iad
sin ri do bheul cìocrach
cha bhi ar sùil
