Once upon a time as a carpenter in ancient mesopotamia I heard something like this.
To me every song ever made is a cover of an even older song and it may so be that even misirlou is a cover of an even older song as most music has roots in ancient times.
And when the time comes and all previously knowing are dead then minds think alike and mind become full again making wonders revived.
Thanks for putting this on here. What a great song. I had no idea the Dick Dale one was a cover. (Its the only thing of his I know) This is fabulous, I really enjoyed it. Thanks again.
yo man people make their own versions of songs because there is never anything that can beat the original so listen to each version of the same song and that Is how bands/ artists can make a song "their own" and give it ownership with different feelings, or arrangements I dislike you for bashing Dick dale man, take that down and don't say nasty things about creative people.
@bufIIk To be honest, I laid down various tracks with this to get the backing track down...including vocals...during the video I am only playing. Thanks for the props, though!
@chevy8nova I'll let this comment remain, but will say that no one is being "ignorant". You clearly have no idea what my point is here, so I'll spell it out for you...I don't question Dale's ability or love for his roots...his version of the song has completely lost the focus and meaning of the song as it was written and previously performed. Much too fast...no lyrics, and very little connection to the original.
@Rebetis1966 Dick Dales Version sounds very much like the original, just with an electric guitar, if it wasn't for him performing it and bringing it to light it would more than likely fade away into the past. It was his version that lead me here to hear it as an original and to learn something new about it.
@guppyboy69 What are you smoking? It sounds NOTHING like the original...Dale didn't "save" it or "revive" it...it was always there in Eastern music...the only thing he did was to blemish the song's origins, and show what an opportunistic American shit he was. Period.
@Glorylord Not necessarily...but I would expect that if someone is going to re-record an old song, there should be a recognizable connection to the original, and not just a new "interpretation". Many artists do this, and it shows me a lack of originality and respect for the original songs.
Personally speaking, I do like the Dick Dale interpretation, but I have to say that I have preferred the traditional folk versions of this Greek song by Greek musicians. The playing and singing on this interpretation are beautiful.
it's all good! it's music. information is not knowledge. knowledge is not wisdom. wisdom is not truth. truth is not beauty. beauty is not love. love is not music. music is the best.
First off, I posted this video to honor the original, and to educate some people who actually think that Dick Dale's version is the original. Secondly, my opinion as to Dale's version is not debatable. It is my opinion. This does not make me narrow-minded or a "cunt" as I have been called. I don't like Dale's version. Period. Deal with it. This is lovely, and I would love to get my mitts on a Bouzouki someday, but to speak ill of Dick Dale's version is unnneeded, and actually really makes me angry as an electric guitarist. Instead of griping about Dick Dale's excellent cover version, why not broaden your own horizons and do a greek folk rendition of a classic electric guitar piece, for example maybe take a stab at some Jimi Hendrix (double DOG dare baby!) or even one of Dick Dale's fine original instrumentals.
@ESD2814GLC Get angry if you want, but it's my channel, my opinion. Dale's version is not excellent, it's an abomination. That's my opinion. Period. This is not about broadening horizons...it's about respecting the music. Dale didn't do that.

Sure I know of it's origins but when you are openminded you'll learn that life is only hindered by closemindedness and I have nothing against you saying bad stuff about Dick Dale or anyone for the matter but if only people were as openminded as I am.
@Rebetis1966, Great playing!... is this a four-course Bouzouki? Is each double-string an octive? Did you synchronize two tracks of your playing? And how is it tuned?... I'm guessing C, F, A, D or something like that? And this was supposed to be in the key of A (major/harmonic minor)?
I can respect the traditional version of this song, but I do not believe that Dick Dale bastardized it, as much as modernized it and paid tribute to the great melody. It sounds beautiful played on this instrument, but the sound quality was a little off.

@jenniferjentle Ok, I agree with you but if Dick Dale wanted to "transform" this song should call it like something else...not "Misirlou" beacuse misirlou is one very very old song and it's Greek/Middle Eastern as @Rebetis1966 said..so he should call it like something else..or not even trasform this legendary song..
@PanosSevo With another name it would me more fun trying to find the original tune ;) A part from that, I think that when an artist makes a cover of a song, it's beacuse that song represents something for him. And it's impossible to make a cover without melting your personality and style in it.
@jenniferjentle Evolution is one thing, but to change a song's tempo, rhythm, and feeling is not evolution...the original has a special feel to it...Dick Dale fucked that up...
@Rebetis1966 It's change, and evolution is based on change. I like Dale's version, maybe because I loved pulp fiction, and reminds me of the film, but I like it.
@Rebetis1966 I like the Dick better. He popularised the only piece in pop music history that may have gone back to Biblical times in its authorship. This guy sounds like Dick Dale with a turban....
I think it's funny that people who like this version think dick dale's version is a bastardization and that people who like dick dale's version think the black eyed peas version is a bastardization
@Rebetis1966 I think that was the best performance I've seen so far.
Some would say that Nick Roubanis' jazz version of 1941 is a bastardization of the 1927 Michalis Patrinos rebetiko version. Both could be questioned by the Anatolian Greeks who carried it to Athens in the previous century.
Either way, to say, "...don't be a Dick." could be considered a challenge to create a bluegrass version. I do have a banjo, after all.
@Rebetis1966 Thats B/S Dick Dale made this song famous for what it is an Awesome Song. Its not a Bastardization its a different version of it, it was a different take on that if no one expirimented in music everything would be dull. Dick Dale is awesome and what you are saying about him is just wrong!
This melody was used to create metal by Dick Dale. Honor to its unknown creator, credit to Dick Dale, shame on black eye piss for disrespecting such a gem with their vomit style lyrics.
@cecerchio You're a total fucking moron. Learn to respect good music, even if you're closed mind doesn't understand the genius of the Black Eyed Peas. Millions worldwide disagree with you, it's ok for you to be wrong :)
@heca906 LoL. The "genius" Black eye peas cant even play an instrument (they need a band for their live concerts). Fergie was chosen cos the pussycat Nicole wasnt available. Following your reasoning I can say that even Bieber is loved by millions. Seriously, if a blend of easy listening pop, RnB, hiphop and disco is your sort of good music dont go around insulting who actually likes the real music and doesnt need to follow the mtv-fed mass.
@cecerchio lmao. You don't have to play an instrument to make music. I compose for piano, voice, drums, bass...but I can't play any of them. It's called making music, one way or the other.
You think a composer plays EVERY instrument in a symphony? Get a clue.
@heca906 Genius iof black eyed peas? Lol wtf, they didn't even remix the song, they literally just sang over the top of it. I'm not even kidding. Oh, and their singing was autotuned...
Its wonderful that such a beautiful melody (and lyrics here) can cross cultures, religions and races :-) - I first got to know the 1950s pop version, but have since heard many different renditions- this is one of the best, another favourite is an old Yiddish version from the 20s or 30s, and I love the Black Eyed Peas version (Pump it). Thanks for posting this
This is amazing to listen to and beautifully played and sung. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us. I love Greek and Middle Eastern music. While I fell in love with the modern version as performed by Dick Dale and the Del Tones, I am totally mesmerized by the original version and song. I can think of nothing else that brings people together more dynamically and harmoniously than music. Like love, music is a universal language.
really good one =) i love greek music!!! But to the guys who are selling information from wikipedia: "Mısırlı" (which is a turkish word) transformed into "Misirlou" (after it became international) thats it!! The name is not arabic, the lyrics are greek and the title is turkish, written by a greek who lived in turkey, simple. Don't fight pelase, turks and greeks are sooooo much similar, that there is really no need to figth =)
ropean@GwgwInis There is much debate about the origins of this song...it is Eastern European....my version is closest to the original version of the tune...everyone else can go fuck themselves because I am sick and tired of who wants to take credit for this tune. Please enjoy...
people arguing that this was originally a greek song: did you even not think about the meaning of the name of the song? Misirlou! it exactly means "egyptian" in turkish. it's composer is known, by the way. His name is "Misirli Udi Efendi", who was born in Haleppo and died in İstanbul. His real name was Avram Levi, that tells us he was a jewish citizen of Ottoman.
That Dick Dale named it to greek culture does not proove it was a greek song.
Dale naming it anything doesnt prove a thing. The song was there a good 30 years before Dales version. it was composed between group of greek musicians (it was a common phenomenon at that time) and lyrics were writen from a greek guy who used to live in Turkish coast city (before all greeks get booted from turkish coastal cities) hence the use of the turkish word misirlou. Now gfo plz tyvm bye
In light of contemporary music terms it would be better to call the "new Misirlou" a "new song with samples from misirlou" instead. I don't think it's a cover or an interpretation, as said, rather a new song which includes samples from Misirlou.
This is very common e.g. in the electronic genre, the "new songs" often sound completly different - therefore it is also common to name the song something different.
IM BACK!!!!! Ok one more thing I don't agree with. If you don't put lyrics to a song that doesn't mean it's bastardized. That's like saying coletranes take on my favorite things is a bastardization simply because it doesn't have lyrics.
@guitarzilla100 As I said, it's not just one thing...I've heard many different renditions of many songs that sound great, and don't lose the feel of the originals. This is one that bears very little resemblence to the original, or several remakes later on. Bottom line, my friend, is that you're entitled to your own opinion, and I, to mine.
Ok, I can understand that but my opinion is when someone covers the song they should use their own interpretation of it. Just my opinion and nothing more.
The point? Please help me understand this point you're trying to make, because my understanding of it is you are just bashing a style of music you don't like.
@guitarzilla100 Sigh....ok, I'll do you the courtesy of an explanation...no one is bashing a "style" of music...this song has roots in what many of us would call the "old world" of Eastern scale music, common to Greek, Arabic, Persian, Indian, etc...and the original "intent" of the song, if you will, is to create an image in your head of a man's longing for this Egyptian woman who he is completely in love with...read the lyrics I have posted.
....... Dick Dale took this song and used it, without lyrics, as part of the "surfer" cult....and in my mind, completely disrespecting the origins and meaning of the song. Why did he do this? Because he liked the song. BUT....he still bastardized the song from it's ORIGINAL intent and feel.
Once upon a time as a carpenter in ancient mesopotamia I heard something like this.
To me every song ever made is a cover of an even older song and it may so be that even misirlou is a cover of an even older song as most music has roots in ancient times.

@TheBMB7 , my conclusion is that Black eyed peas version is crap, doesn't matter how version you like, original or Dick Dales'

@TheBMB7 Then imagine what such people think of Black eyed peas's song in comparison with this one

@TheBMB7 Black Eyed Peas have a version of this song? I thought they just took the CD of Dick Dale's song and hit the play button.

Millions worldwide disagree with you, it's ok for you to be wrong :)
heca906 5 months ago
@heca906 LoL. The "genius" Black eye peas cant even play an instrument (they need a band for their live concerts). Fergie was chosen cos the pussycat Nicole wasnt available. Following your reasoning I can say that even Bieber is loved by millions. Seriously, if a blend of easy listening pop, RnB, hiphop and disco is your sort of good music dont go around insulting who actually likes the real music and doesnt need to follow the mtv-fed mass.
cecerchio 5 months ago
@cecerchio lmao. You don't have to play an instrument to make music. I compose for piano, voice, drums, bass...but I can't play any of them. It's called making music, one way or the other.
You think a composer plays EVERY instrument in a symphony? Get a clue.
heca906 5 months ago

Rebetis1966 9 months ago
@GreasyRockabilly, The Original Lyrics are Greek from 1927.
It was first recorded in New York City and not in Athens as one would expect.
As usual the Turks say it is a Turkish song .... because of the tile .. to which we sazy Bull S....t !,
The title is Arabic and not Turkish fron the Arabic word: Misr=Egypt, and therefore the title in English is 'Egyptian Girl'

I've never seen such foolish arguments.
people arguing that this was originally a greek song: did you even not think about the meaning of the name of the song? Misirlou! it exactly means "egyptian" in turkish. it's composer is known, by the way. His name is "Misirli Udi Efendi", who was born in Haleppo and died in İstanbul. His real name was Avram Levi, that tells us he was a jewish citizen of Ottoman.
That Dick Dale named it to greek culture does not proove it was a greek song.
Mrendulus 11 months ago
@Mrendulus
Now gfo plz tyvm bye
touliable 9 months ago
@touliable
The word Misirlu is Greek and not Turkish. it is derived from the Arab word Misr = Egypt in Arabic.
Therefore, the title of the song is 'Egyptian Girl in English'.
Needless to say that it is now an international song after Dick Dale, Black Eye Peas and the Pulp Fiction Film

HellenicFinix 11 months ago
The song was for sure "bastardized" as you say.
It has a completly new feel.

I like all versions of this song/instrumental.
This one just radiates the culture.

Xylology0 1 year ago
IM BACK!!!!! Ok one more thing I don't agree with. If you don't put lyrics to a song that doesn't mean it's bastardized. That's like saying coletranes take on my favorite things is a bastardization simply because it doesn't have lyrics.
guitarzilla100 1 year ago
@guitarzilla100 As I said, it's not just one thing...I've heard many different renditions of many songs that sound great, and don't lose the feel of the originals. This is one that bears very little resemblence to the original, or several remakes later on. Bottom line, my friend, is that you're entitled to your own opinion, and I, to mine.
Rebetis1966 1 year ago
@Rebetis1966 thats true, i suppose i just like to assert my opinion more than others.
guitarzilla100 1 year ago
Ok, I can understand that but my opinion is when someone covers the song they should use their own interpretation of it. Just my opinion and nothing more.
guitarzilla100 1 year ago
The point? Please help me understand this point you're trying to make, because my understanding of it is you are just bashing a style of music you don't like.
guitarzilla100 1 year ago
@guitarzilla100 Sigh....ok, I'll do you the courtesy of an explanation...no one is bashing a "style" of music...this song has roots in what many of us would call the "old world" of Eastern scale music, common to Greek, Arabic, Persian, Indian, etc...and the original "intent" of the song, if you will, is to create an image in your head of a man's longing for this Egyptian woman who he is completely in love with...read the lyrics I have posted.
Rebetis1966 1 year ago
....... Dick Dale took this song and used it, without lyrics, as part of the "surfer" cult....and in my mind, completely disrespecting the origins and meaning of the song. Why did he do this? Because he liked the song. BUT....he still bastardized the song from it's ORIGINAL intent and feel.
