Im learning this song right now and the end is a bitch. Hitting that high F on an E vowel is killing me and I crack it half the time. How this man can do it at 85....
85 years old, you can hear that the lower range belongs to an old man, but that takes nothing from his wonderful interpretation (in fact it adds to the tenderness, it's touching). He has that total command of the ageing artist, no need to do much: the music is living within his soul. The solid full quality of his top is stunning, most singers at 60 have a wobble!
I had the same impression with the 90 year old Perlemuter playing Chopin. The composer and interpreter are one, a gravelly low note or a slip of the finger in a difficult passage is of no importance
You are quite right. In his prime Reizen had a range from low F to high A sharp, some two and a half octaves. His high G is on record in the 1938 complete Ruslan. In his recordings of the 40's and 50's the low range is just wonderful and velvety, as for instace the Gremin of 1948
Incredible man!!! When I hear that guy I don't wanna hear any crap about famous italian basses....whatever, great piece like it always is with Reizen!

The pianist in this recital was Vladimir Khvostin. He indeed deserves mention for his contribution.

Yes, I totally agree with you, vhan2007 !
He is supportive, keeping legato, not noisy.
Well balanced performance !

Another gem from the famous TV recital in 1980 at age 85. At the same time Reizen issued a stereo LP album with these songs.
Amazingly his first recording was in 1929, 50 years earlier in, of all places, London
