I installed Xubuntu (Edgy Eft) once, on an old Mac, and it took FOREVER.
I like Xfce a lot. The blue desktop seems more 'natural' a colour than Ubuntu's brown. (Just one of those ergonomic laws: pencils must be yellow, chalkboards must be black and computer desktops must be blue.)
Given the fact that the installer had the screen capture program running as well, it took a little longer than it normally would have. I'd say that it probably took about 30-45 minutes for everything to get up and running. It's been a few months since I did the install, though, so my memory of it may be getting a bit fuzzy.
hey sorry to be betch but I'm very new to this and I was wondering if you could help me out by giving me instructions on how to install xubuntu I downloaded it from the web site to get an ISO file do I just mount it with power Iso or somthing?
I would recommend a CD burning program, such as cdburnerxp pro (free download, works great) to burn the .iso file onto either a CD-RW disc or a CD-R disc. Once that's been done, you'll want to boot off of the CD, which can be done by either changing the boot order in the BIOS, or possibly by entering a one-time boot selection (generally by pressing F12 during boot-up).
Yes, it is safe to do online banking on Ubuntu (some would argue even safer than doing so on Windows). With the option of running Ubuntu from a LiveCD, that provides an even more secure environment, if somewhat slower.
I have a few questions about Linux. one i atempted to install Ubuntu , but it seeemed to freezed here and there, i was worried the system would crash so i manually shut the system down. now i believe this occured due to the shortage of RAM ( it only has 256 DDR) i am currently downloading Xubuntu, and i would like to know if u think it will not freeze or as to wht i should expect when install. thank you for ur help . :)
The Xubuntu install should go smoothly for you. If you're still experiencing lag, though, you could always try the Alternate Install ISO - it's command-line-only, and is even lighter on system resources during install.
My connection is Verizon DSL through a Fujitsu SpeedPort modem and a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless b/g router. The computer I did the install on was connected via ethernet cable to the router.
what kind of internet do u have? like do u use a router? bc i have a pentium iii laptop, and when i use xubuntu i don't know how to get the connection
How fast did your install take?

Xubuntu typically goes much better. It is much lighter than Ubuntu

It's been a while since I did the installation and I have since given the machine away, but I believe it had either 256 or 512 MB RAM
