Was exposed to the sugarcubes on the PIL/New Order/Sugarcubes tour in 89. I was 12. It was awesome @ Merriweather! Listen to this track every year since.
This song completely changed my musical tastes. I remember seeing the video on Channel 4 chart show when it first came out and it was weeks in the Indie chart. I rushed out and bought it and still play the disk from time to time. Sounds so much better than the cd.
Such a beautiful voice. I always want to cry when I hear this in Icelandic. On a completely different note, does anyone know which martial art she was practising in the video? Some sort of Icelandic karate, perhaps?
I received a "Birthday" maxi single for a birthday present in 1992, and it contained many mixes of this song including the Icelandic demo version heard in this video. For fun I tried to copy the vocalisations but could never quite hit the note she does at 2:20...
This is the video I remember and the Icelandic version was on side 'b' from the English version-I used to be able to sing both version's,but both of them are amazing!
@prnorth i can see you think the lyrics are about something sexual between a child and an old man. i dont agree with you on that allthough it would be easy to put that meaning into the lyrics.
So superior to English version TO ME. Maybe it's because I speak English. Perhaps it is better to not know Icelandic when listening to this so as to open up interpretation of the vocal inflections.

@TheMasterTripMonkey : Maybe its just me, but why does it look like I'm making opti95's comments? Can't UTube fix this? Anyhow, thank you for your opinions, opti95...(and kudos for reading Nietzsche).
Was there a different video? I recall just a dark room with her dancing in the middle of it... similar to this but this is not it. It didn't show a close up of her face.

geez! I've just realized how much I love this song! I hear the icelandic version for the first time and I find it a way more amazing! It has a lot of energy. Icelandic sounds so beautiful and Björk.. she's simply splendid! aahh ;)
Wow she is soo "raw-ly" talented! I love all of her music, I especially like her music frm the 80's when her voice was young, I just love her. Period lol

I don't know... I think this is kind of more real in a way, it's like she hasn't developed that professionalist song technic that became sort of over the top, she's just singing in her own original way here...
@budianabanana "Feral" struck me at first as a funny adjective. Then a fitting one. Then a lovely one--are you the first person to bend that word back to describe human things, like Bjork's voice? Her voice IS feral-- relost to nature, and beautiful.
Mtv played this, a 2nd vid & a short interview w/ Bjork & Sugarcubes' main guy back in 1988. Not sure why I recorded it all but glad I did. Got the cd w/ the English version, but always liked this much better. He complained rather endearingly Icelandic music wasn't taken seriously mainland Europe. They FELT a part of it, but their music scene was ignored he said. Wonder if Bjork later brought him into her solo career, or just left him far from far behind.
Picture and sound-wise (execpt that its mono) this is good quality for Utube. Thanks for posting.
The other video they played was by a Sugarcubes RELATED group. ...outdoors by a lake or the sea, dancing girls in trad. Icelandic dress... title maybe something like 'No Limits' or 'No Remorse'. (keep hearing little snatches in my head...but that's all!) Anyone know this song? - The native language of Icelandians is Danish, I learned that night.
@marmas58ink In a manner of speaking. Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian, and Swedish come from Old Danish, but they're not Danish, just as Spanish isn't Italian.
@marmas58ink I wouldn't be surprised if he did - it was still called the Danish tongue, even as the languages diverged completely, and maybe those historically inclined refer to it as such even in modern times.
@barkingnoise Well no, because Italian is the descendant of their shared mother tongue in the original locale of said mother tongue, just as Danish is of Old Norse, perhaps more appropriately titled Old Danish. My point is not that Icelandic isn't Old Icelandic, it's that it isn't Danish. To see the direct parallel, Italian would have to still be called Latin, but then that would be the same situation that caused the confusion in the first place.
@LokiClock But Danish isn't Old Danish, it's even further from it than Icelandic.
Icelandic is most similar to Old Danish. A lot more than Danish itself.
The only thing Icelandic and Danish has in common linguistically is Old Danish, as it is their shared "mother tounge", like Italian and Spanish are to Latin, but in comparison, Latin would have to be called "Old Italian".
@barkingnoise No, that's not what I meant at all. I'm not comparing either language to Old Danish. Old Danish only comes into the equation as the origin for the namesake. If Italian were called Latin, references to "Latin America," for instance, would be largely misleading, just as referring to Icelandic as "Danish" is misleading now (as opposed to whence the term originated), when the languages are separate.
This was the first time I've seen this. Great! I have the 7" vinyl. Bought it as a imported record from britian. Icelandic one side other side in engish.
Mtv played this, another vid & a short interview w/ Bjork and the Sugarcubes' main guy back in 1988. Not sure why I recorded it all but glad I did. Got the cd w/ the English version, but always liked this much better.
He complained rather endearingly Icelandic music wasn't taken seriously by Europe. They FELT a part of Europe, but the nation's music scene was ignored he said. Wonder if Bjork brought him into her much more sucessful career, or just left him far from far behind.
@sneekz07 ...What you say makes about perfect sense... but if I had made music w/ some friends, gotten some 'noteriety' w/ them... and then later hit the bigtime, I think I would want to do something where they could share in my luck. ...Maybe her Sugarcubes bandmates were never really close friends w/ her?
@marmas58ink But they didn't want to. Most of them were Icelands most promising writers and poets. They didn't want to be doing soundchecks and cords. They wanted to be writing. What was supposed to be a joke band spiraled into something serious. Also that record/poet label, 'Bad taste' they set up. Bjork is still running it with them, and she has been for the last 20 or so years. So they are close friends.
@sneekz07 Oh OK, thanks. Glad to know it. ...Looking around I finally found most of what Mtv aired in 1988....The other video they played wasn't The Sugarcubes at all but a pre-Sugarcubes group, I guess, "No Pain" by Ornamental. The singer is female, but it's not Bjork... I don't think.
Mtv played this, another vid & a short interview w/ Bjork and the Sugarcubes' main guy back in 1988. Not sure why I recorded it all but glad I did. Got the cd w/ the English version, but always liked this much better.

Lost in translation - not likely. It's not very ambiguous. She may have changed her mind about having recorded it, but that doesn't change the meaning.
@reagent12 i've read Bjork quoted as saying this is a dirty little song or words to the effect-even if it is about a grandfather rather than neighbour as it is in the English version it doesn't refute the implied relationship and what could start in icelandic to end up as "He's Got A Chain Of Flowers/And Sows A Bird In Her Knickers" in English
Bjork, God bless her, changes her mind about what this song means everytime she is asked.
The lyrics in English dont leave much to the imagination, its pretty clear its about an erotic relationship of some sort between a young girl and an adult male.
Strangely just like Nabakov's novel Lolita, it is imbued with an innocent charm despite being about a monstrous relationship.
In what way is it about a "monstrous relationship"? Without intending to be controversial, a child's love and misplaced sexual curiosity about a man or elderly man isn't necessarily indicative of some kind of paedophilic interaction. Because she has these thoughts and feelings doesn't mean she is a victim or the prey of a monster. As you say, there is an innocent charm about this, but in this case I don't think there is anything beyond innocence; where is the "monstrous relationship"?
fuck you and dont PM me. Also, read bjorks interview so you dont act like a twat. And if you want me dead [like you mentioned] better try and make that happen, twat. I will defend myself and you will be destroyed.
Lol. Touchy. I can see on your channel & comments you're a popular girl. Now go fuck off and die. I'm not a musical snob - I enjoy the music for what it is, which Bjork advocates.
mmmm .. the voice

@marmas58ink Well if she went on a SOLO career path, she isn't going to bring people with her is she lol? Einar is in a duo called Ghostdigital now.

@sneekz07 ...What you say makes about perfect sense... but if I had made music w/ some friends, gotten some 'noteriety' w/ them... and then later hit the bigtime, I think I would want to do something where they could share in my luck. ...Maybe her Sugarcubes bandmates were never really close friends w/ her?
marmas58ink 1 year ago
@marmas58ink But they didn't want to. Most of them were Icelands most promising writers and poets. They didn't want to be doing soundchecks and cords. They wanted to be writing. What was supposed to be a joke band spiraled into something serious. Also that record/poet label, 'Bad taste' they set up. Bjork is still running it with them, and she has been for the last 20 or so years. So they are close friends.
sneekz07 1 year ago
@sneekz07 Oh OK, thanks. Glad to know it. ...Looking around I finally found most of what Mtv aired in 1988....The other video they played wasn't The Sugarcubes at all but a pre-Sugarcubes group, I guess, "No Pain" by Ornamental. The singer is female, but it's not Bjork... I don't think.

everybody is missing the point.bjork has stated it was lost in translation.this song is about a grand father and his grandaughter
andplumb 2 years ago 17
Lost in translation - not likely. It's not very ambiguous. She may have changed her mind about having recorded it, but that doesn't change the meaning.
reagent12 2 years ago
@reagent12 i've read Bjork quoted as saying this is a dirty little song or words to the effect-even if it is about a grandfather rather than neighbour as it is in the English version it doesn't refute the implied relationship and what could start in icelandic to end up as "He's Got A Chain Of Flowers/And Sows A Bird In Her Knickers" in English
srhvideo 1 year ago
Bjork, God bless her, changes her mind about what this song means everytime she is asked.
The lyrics in English dont leave much to the imagination, its pretty clear its about an erotic relationship of some sort between a young girl and an adult male.
Strangely just like Nabakov's novel Lolita, it is imbued with an innocent charm despite being about a monstrous relationship.
spkenn36 1 year ago 3
In what way is it about a "monstrous relationship"? Without intending to be controversial, a child's love and misplaced sexual curiosity about a man or elderly man isn't necessarily indicative of some kind of paedophilic interaction. Because she has these thoughts and feelings doesn't mean she is a victim or the prey of a monster. As you say, there is an innocent charm about this, but in this case I don't think there is anything beyond innocence; where is the "monstrous relationship"?

... actually the song is about a little girl who has a boyfriend at age 50 and she is visiting him for his birthday... awkward.

@andplumb - The lyrics in Icelandic are:
Hún á einn vin, hann býr á móti. ('She has one friend, he lives across [the street])
Wondering what is lost in translation?

This song has both a sinister and innocent air to it ,and is sung by one of the most original female vocalists ever.

Lol. Touchy. I can see on your channel & comments you're a popular girl. Now go fuck off and die. I'm not a musical snob - I enjoy the music for what it is, which Bjork advocates.
