Dennis Chambers is the KING of drumroll seizures and unexpected lightning fast tom rolls, he is playing simple in this clip, because he is giving the spot to Tony for a sec. so he can cut loose. You need to see the 10 minute version of this clip before saying dumbshit statements like that. They take turns grooving/soloing throughout the whole thing.

On the reverse side of the beater, there is rubber, instead of felt. It gives a sound with more attack. Just a personal preference of Mr. Royster.

i think its also because of the speed he plays to, he probably also wants better response. But most people turn beaters around for live in order to get more punch. thats what i do versus playing indoors or recordings.
