I've seen 16" discs only a few times, at antique shops. I didn't pick them up, because I thought they would be 16 2/3 speed and require a special player. I also thought they would play from the inside out. I bet they're hard to store, too!
Some of the earlier ones are 78 rpm, most after the late 1930s are 33 1/3 rpm. Some, about 10% of them, play from the inside out but a transcription turntable can do that. It has no auto - reject mechanism. I made some boxes from 1/2 inch plywood to house my collection of about 500 transcriptions, about 80-90 in each box. Found a nice collection of French radio programs from the early 1950s. Lots of cool music there.
This is very cool. I doubt this recording is available elsewhere. I've never heard Benny play Donna Lee before! I would have liked to see the transcription player you're using- I haven't seen one of those in action. What did you have to do to get the extra long time allowance?
I use a Garrad 4HF(L) turntable c.1960 or so. View just about any of my other videos to see it in action with 10 inch and 12 inch records.
I don't know why they're allowing me extra time. Just discovered a notice posted when I go to the upload page. This is my first attempt to upload a longer video, 1/2 hour, and it worked!
This was from a CBS live remote from 3 June 1948. There is actually one more tune that was recorded but not used by AFRS - the BG3 (if you will) doing "There's a Small Hotel."
Always a pleasure to discover the many recordings you have! I love Patti Page and Benny Goodman. To find them together on a long play recording from the year before LP's were sold to the general public is amazing:-) Happy New Year!
Thanks for your comments. These transcriptions are recorded at 33 1/3 rpm, like an LP, but they do not have the LP style microgroove. Their groove is similar to the 78 rpm records of the period. 15 minutes per side just about fills up the disc.
Thank you! This is fantastic!
