hmm, that is a good question. Sometimes I think he's crazy egotistical and infatuated with himself, but he also writes some incredibly heart-felt lyrics and you can just hear his pain come through. Most good art is rooted in pain of some kind.

actually, I was under the impression that he was in a punk band before Whiskeytown, and has said that singing country was much easier than punk.

and his early solo work would indicate he does have a sense for punk-esque stuff.

not sure if it's still there, but he put some of his genre experiment music up on myspace as his default playlist.

there was some rap, some heavily distorted metal-esque stuff, etc.

I'm not sure I believe he was in a death metal band, but I wouldn't entirely discredit it.

have you seen Andy Summers of the police play his telecaster? Hes been using the same tele since they started, its all warn down where the arm rubs when you strum, but it sounds amazing.
