@St3p7up MM is much, MUCH closer to being a true RPG because of its more life-like Overworld. A lot of people call Zelda an Action/Adventure, but I've never once heard any reason why it's an Action/Adventure and only a lot of reasons why it's not an RPG. Most of the reasons I've heard are ignorant at best, and completely disregards the meaning of the genre name, Role-Playing Game.
You do play a role in Zelda. It's the very reason why the protagonist is called Link.
@St3p7up You don't customize your character in FF, except the original. Levelling up is just a bonus. You don't level up in Fable, for example. There are many sub-genres of RPG. Zelda is in many ways its own.
@Dalryk You "play a role" in EVERY game. Is Half-life an RPG because you play Gordon Freeman? RPG in video game terms has never meant role-playing game. 99% of video game RPGs feature no actual role-playing from the player, the term refers to games that use heavy RNG and stat building. Hearts and items are not enough to make Zelda an RPG or games like Metroid, Ratchet and Clank, and Devil May Cry would be considered RPGs as well.
@TheBaron87YT wrong. The term does not refer to games that use heavy RNG and Stat building, that is simply a common quality of RPGs. RPG stands for Role Playing Game and as such can be applied to any game in which you play a role. Does that mean the Zelda franchise is not an adventure franchise? No, in fact many RPGs can also be considered adventure games.
@TheBaron87YT Nope. You play the character, but you're not the character. In Zelda you ARE Link. As for stat building, that's just one version of building up your character. Zelda has Heart Pieces and Containers. It also have an Overworld, subscreens, item upgrades, NPCs and dungeons, all typical RPG elements. Not to mention, the original game is the grandparent of RPGs like The Elder Scrolls.
Tell me, what Action/Adventure elements do Zelda have?
@Dalryk I wish Youtube had mods so we could ban trolls like you.
So in Modern Warfare 2 I play a character, but I'm not that character. In multiplayer I unlock guns and attachments, and in singleplayer there are NPC bad guys to shoot and multiple levels. Does that make it an RPG?
@TheBaron87YT rpg doesn't mean stat building. the simple formula for rpg games require the fetch quests feature, the storyline feature, and a certain type of gameplay that makes each one seem unique but similar in a way. this game can either be stated as an action/adventure game, or an action rpg game.
@McScreamo By that definition the Metroid series would be a RPGs, and the Dragon Quest series would not, because Metroid has fetch quests, a story, and different gameplay, and DQ has the same gameplay every game. And what game DOESN'T have a storyline?
@TheBaron87YT ........uggh, you do not comprehend well. i specifically said that all rpg games follow a similar gameplay path! and by story i mean progressive story by going through an event formula.
Well it would seem the debate about the definition of RPGs has been dragged up again. Most of the suggestions, such as customization and added sidequests, are only expressions of the core elements of an RPG. I think RonixEnclave has come the closest so far, explaining how an RPG is about you playing a character you created in a world you can manipulate at will and not at the mercy of the story. RPGs didn't start out as video games, and it seems only a few games have succeeded in being RPGs.
but it's not an rpg, so it doesn't count in this case.
And btw, you're not even playing a role in this game. You don't make any decisions, nothing is affected by your actions, and you have no real influence on the game other then just guiding Link from start to finish.
Okay, that makes sense. An RPG has to be fairly character-driven, where the questions and decisions you, the player, make have some impact on the future. Games such as Chrono Trigger, FFVII, and the Tales series. But by that definition most RPGs out there would no longer qualify as RPGs. Pokemon, for instance. Would alternate endings also be a requirement of an rpg?
@IamMeHere2See actully like there's questions that DO affect the future in the games, like on the television, you see a red thing or the blue thing, if you pick one, latios comes at the end of the game, same for other thing
Except that event has no really bearing on the storyline. It would be just the same as picking the starter or either Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee. You're still just following the same story from start to finish.
well the most common aspect of rpg is getting into battle and leveling up, getting upgrades along the way! that why pokemon is one of the best examples of that. you also do get alterative endings for pokemon, and people give diffrent items and advice to you for picking the pokemon. even someganes, the final boss is different.
An RPG consists of making a character suited to how you want them to be. Those games would still classify, because you choose how you want them developed. Role-playing is pretending to be someone else and making the character as you see fit. Zelda can be considered an RPG, because you are given the choice to name Link. Thus, you made your own hero, though it was tiny. We however, put it under the Action/Adventure genre because those elements stick out more.
I knew it consisted of more than just levelling and combat, and I can accept the catch-all definition, but if that's the case then the supportive elements are what truly define a game. What would Final Fantasy be classified as if the term RPG wasn't around?
I would say if we branced out the term RPG more, I would consider FF to fall under turn based or strategy. It's really hard to label some, because many "RPGs" cross very fine lines to be different.
it still an RPG it just isn't as depth in terms of how u can upgrade link. u can upgrade him just not as much as others. and honestly who cares zelda ocarina of time is one of the best games ever made.
An RPG is a game where accomplishments are seen through some sort of level system, where a significant change in your abilities, such as how much damage you inflict with a single hit, is noticeably seen over time. In The Legend of Zelda, the only thing that changes is the items you have in your arsenal for use and the areas he can visit. His attacks always inflict the same amount of damage, despite how many bosses you defeat. Therefore, The Legend of Zelda is an adventure game.
Oh yes, and as for what Link might say in that situation, i would have to go along the lines of, "Son-of-a-goddamn-bitch, how many times do I have to kill you before you stay dead?"
Man, you obviously know so little about true RPGs.. it's sad how the term RPG has been used as something completely different than what is supposed to mean..
If your meaning by the term "Role Playing" as in any time you assume the role of another person and progress through the game, then i suppose you are right. In which case, Call of Duty, Madden NFL, and pretty much every other game on the shelf is an RPG. Granted, many games contain RPG elements, but what i described above is the formula for a traditional western RPG. J-RPGs put more emphasis on the character development and emotions, if thats what you meant by getting the meaning wrong.
What about "The World Ends with You?" Clearly an RPG, yet "leveling-up" only increases one's HP. All damage and defensive stats are influenced by the clothing and items which you equip.
I thought an RPG required the gamer to take control of one or several multiple characters to tell a story, but that's just my interpretation. Madden and FIFA are hardly story-driven, so they aren't RPGs.
LoZ is an Action-Adventure game with RPG characteristics, and that qualifies it for the list in my eye.
Just because a game is story driven, doesn't make it an RPG.
I mean, there's a story in games like Street Fighter, Ninja Gaiden, and Metal Gear and those aren't rpgs by a long shot.
And in Zelda, you're not even properly playing a role; you have little to no influence on the story, nothing changes or doesn't change as a result of your actions, and the story goes on despite what you may or may not want to do.
Zelda has RPG elements, such as naming your character, upgrading "Link" as you see fit, etc. However, Zelda is much more action based where aiming matters etc. so we throw it into Action/Adventure.
RPG is actually a "broad" term in and of itself. The only other spin off of the term is Action RPG. I would consider Elder Scolls a sandbox RPG, FF turn based RPG, Zelda Action/Adventure RPG, etc. But we just kind of throw them randomly sometimes
naming your character is variably the same as naming a system file. You could name your files in Mario RPG, yet everyone still called him Mario, and it was an RPG, hell it had it in the title.
And upgrading is in every game with power ups and special abilities so that point is kind of moot.
Again, I'm talking about molding your character to your own tastes. You have to look at original "Role-Playing" without the game part. In role-playing, you create your own character, his history, abilities, looks, etc. And then you put that character into a story someone has created for you and others which we would call a Dungeon Master. FF, Chrono Trigger Mario RPG just lack creation of your own character to RPGs. They are more like "pre-set" RPGs. It's not "turn based" that makes an rpg.
Zelda Ocarina of Time was an Role-playing game of epic porportions. It is an
RPG because as the game went on,
Link grew in a way to make him more better. he always used stuff to make himself triumph over the oblivious fact that he had enemies. by definition thats what an rpg is. :P thx you@
i am totally biased in this opinion, but this song is so epic, that when the game came out when i was 8 and i watched my brother play the game, i started crying. it has really left a big impression in my mind. now i see that it is indeed a beautiful piece of work, so awe inspiring that i just... wow
(continued) that's not a commentary on the poster of this video, just on the discussion that was brought up.
That said, as battle themes in general go, FFX, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star II take my top prize. The Last Battle from OoT is a close fourth, because it's very good and that whole battle is my favorite from any game.
Shadow of the Colossus had several good ones too, I should mention.
I don't think an RPG has anything to do with the story. It's about the mechanics. The underlying architecture of the Ocarina of Time gameplay is hardly based on the core RPG stuff--dice rolls, stats, etc. Even many modern JRPG's have deviated from "real" RPG mechanics.
That said, I'm not an RPG player and it doesn't stop OoT from being my favorite game. But if modern JRPG's are questionable, Zelda's status is definite: it is an adventure game, plain and simple.
i rember how i rolled through his legs when i had no more arrows and noticed that it was a way easier method to beat him
The first time i fought him i had those gliding boots on and when i got hit i thought "what the hell how strongs this guy" as he tossed me through the whole arena and back
also i always wondered how you could win this if you didnt get the biggoron sword
I don't see why Zelda wouldn't be considered an RPG by some. You play through the eyes as link, and it really does have a developed story. (Twilight Princess <3) No one questions how Final Fantasy X is an RPG, but there really isnt much difference in story from TP. You play through the eyes of your character and make an odd choice for him to say every now and again. I love both the games and have nothing bad to say about either.. save for Midna locking Link out of her realm...
I ageree that Zelda is one of the best (if not the best) video game franchises, and that it's music is great. However, RPG compositions are increadible and simply saying "ZELDA IS TEH BEST!" (sorry if that was offensive) isn't going to make up.
Zelda is sort of an RPG, but an RPG is mainly something with a long story with lots of speaking roles. Zelda games usually don't have much to say compared to most RPGs, but it still has quite a few things. But yeah, there's also leveling up and other playable characters to be involved. An Action Adventure, or an Action RPG. It's probably just an adventure game. And Mario... none of them is really an RPG except for Super Mario RPG and the Paper Mario series of course.
@TagIradle This game has a weird genre classification as it is an action, adventure, strategy, puzzle, rpg game. Yeah, so it could be listed under any of thos categories :P
LoZ is a RPG but its ultimately it's own category. it features puzzle, dungeon crawler, action, adventure, and RPG aspects. So its really its own genre of game. just my opinion.
"If Link could talk he'd probably say something awfully profane right about now..."
Something like "Oh shit...!"
This game was simply amazing. My whole family just loved it and I HIGHLY regret selling this game. Somebody call me an idiot right now. The storyline was just amazing and it's N64 for fuck sake, quality meant nothing, it was all gameplay and storyline.
i think link will not say " oh shit" because that is sometime like funny words, sometime like "gta san adreas style" link is sometime like "heroic" not funny "ohh shit ",anyway, link dont talk and will never talk, if that hapen the game will fucked up,is sometime like reviling master chief face from halo xD
i wouldnt count zelda as a classic rpg but i guess it falls within the boundaries. you do get a storyline out and who cares -- the music is nice on the list!
Go search for nintendo RPGs on gamespot. See how many Zelda titles you find. Then compare that number with the number of Zelda titles you find under Action.
if you're here stop arguing about what kinda game and just listen to the damn music.. 'tis annoying to see one argue with another.. ever heard of "To each his own"?
That saying only applies to opinions and personal preferences. Zelda 2 is the only RPG in the series. See if you can figure out why, it's not that difficult.
Truthfully, I have to agree with 4tehhorde. RPG can't be any game you play with a character. If that were true, then...Would there be any other gaming categories? Nah, Zelda's more Adventure-based, seeing as there's a lot of traveling and diversity in areas.
I remember back when I first got this game for the N64. After coming off of Mario 64, this game was like a heaven on earth, especially when I got to this battle.
An RPG is a video game where you get experience from killing things and level up a character. If a role playing game were a game where you play the role of someone almost every video game would be classified as an RPG.
agreed.basically the new ninja gaiden it's like Zelda, you fight, you get items, you got some sort of magic, bows, and stuff like that, and i'm sure it's not a RPG so i love the zelda games, but it is not a RPG just because its medieval fantasy ^^
I've played through Link to the Past like 4 times and I still say OoT is my favorite...and you're saying we're ignorant but yet you say "zomg link to the past is the best noobs"?
I love Ocarina, but The Wind Waker was a step in the wrong direction with the graphics, and the story wasn't that great. Ocarina will always be the best. I've played it again and again, and I think I'll probably get the N64 out right now and give it another go. It never gets old for me :)
Of course "The wind waker" is not better than Ocarina of time but is a great game and the story is really cool!
The graphics...hmm what can i said!?
Twilight princess kick ocarina in graphic but in other way it don`t even scratch it!...so the graphics is not all!...The story and the gameplay is what will tell you the best of all! oh yes and the music too! BUT WIND WAKER HAS MORE COOL MUSIC THAN TWILIGHT PRINCESS
so then what would god of war be is it an rpg too lol ok its rpg action adventure platformer all mixed together to make a new genre the name is zelda ok its not rpg its zelda there i just solved all our problems
There are such things as AARPG, action adventure role playing games. It's for those games that are not quite in either type of game. God of War and Orcarin of Time I'd say fall under the action adventure type games.

kamiloo86 2 years ago
Zelda is sort of an RPG, but an RPG is mainly something with a long story with lots of speaking roles. Zelda games usually don't have much to say compared to most RPGs, but it still has quite a few things. But yeah, there's also leveling up and other playable characters to be involved. An Action Adventure, or an Action RPG. It's probably just an adventure game. And Mario... none of them is really an RPG except for Super Mario RPG and the Paper Mario series of course.
AkumaUchitoru 2 years ago
RPG=any fucking game where the main guy uses sword/axe/(w/e) and magic to fight fantasy monsters. Atleast thats what it means to me.

Zelda is not and RPG.

Isn't Zelda an Adventure game and not a RPG?
TagIradle 2 years ago 22
@TagIradle this game/song is so god damn awesome it could make its way onto a top 100 racing game music list
janeaba 1 year ago
@TagIradle It can be classified as both since Link contains both types of features. But it's mostly Adventure with some RPG added to it
XxGonixXFAN 1 year ago
@TagIradle maybe he ment the literal definition of RPG
DemonicGhostwithin 11 months ago
@TagIradle This game has a weird genre classification as it is an action, adventure, strategy, puzzle, rpg game. Yeah, so it could be listed under any of thos categories :P
Pyro25100 7 months ago
LoZ is a RPG but its ultimately it's own category. it features puzzle, dungeon crawler, action, adventure, and RPG aspects. So its really its own genre of game. just my opinion.

"If Link could talk he'd probably say something awfully profane right about now..."
Something like "Oh shit...!"
This game was simply amazing. My whole family just loved it and I HIGHLY regret selling this game. Somebody call me an idiot right now. The storyline was just amazing and it's N64 for fuck sake, quality meant nothing, it was all gameplay and storyline.
GameManiac3 2 years ago
i think link will not say " oh shit" because that is sometime like funny words, sometime like "gta san adreas style" link is sometime like "heroic" not funny "ohh shit ",anyway, link dont talk and will never talk, if that hapen the game will fucked up,is sometime like reviling master chief face from halo xD
ZeldaSam1991 2 years ago
GameManiac3, Link would probly say "Son... of... a... muther... FUCKING BITCH!"
TearGrande 2 years ago
Yeah probably indeed. ^^
Although since he doesn't speak he might scream out all of his yelling noises XD Lol that would be funny.

You're an idiot..
⌐_⌐ what? He said call him one..

For a second there I thought you wanted to start something but I realized, yeah i'm an idiot for selling the game. =(
GameManiac3 2 years ago
i wouldnt count zelda as a classic rpg but i guess it falls within the boundaries. you do get a storyline out and who cares -- the music is nice on the list!

Zelda isn't an RPG, dumbass...
4tehhorde 2 years ago
i agreed zelda isnt a rpg, is a adventure action quest open world :D, i hear some stupid friends saying zelda is like metin 2, AHAHAHAH totaly stupid
ZeldaSam1991 2 years ago
It's classified as Action/Adventure, which is a subclass of RPG.
Noob.
hoboX10 2 years ago
Uh, not really. RPGs involve some form of experience system and leveling up. Action/Adventure doesn't. NOOB.
4tehhorde 2 years ago
That's just another form of an RPG, don't act like you know what you're talking about noob.
hoboX10 2 years ago
Go search for nintendo RPGs on gamespot. See how many Zelda titles you find. Then compare that number with the number of Zelda titles you find under Action.
4tehhorde 2 years ago
that doesn't change the technical meaning, RPG is just used to mean turn-based but technically any game with a character is an RPG, because it means
ROLE. PLAYING. GAME. once you get that through your thick skull it's quite simple
JustinMcQueenTheMan 2 years ago
Sigh...You can't beat a brick wall at tennis. Never mind.
4tehhorde 2 years ago
RPG stands for Role Playing Game, in short any game where you play as a character is an RPG
JustinMcQueenTheMan 2 years ago
That's a joke, right?
4tehhorde 2 years ago
if you're here stop arguing about what kinda game and just listen to the damn music.. 'tis annoying to see one argue with another.. ever heard of "To each his own"?
shinjite22 2 years ago
That saying only applies to opinions and personal preferences. Zelda 2 is the only RPG in the series. See if you can figure out why, it's not that difficult.
4tehhorde 2 years ago
Truthfully, I have to agree with 4tehhorde. RPG can't be any game you play with a character. If that were true, then...Would there be any other gaming categories? Nah, Zelda's more Adventure-based, seeing as there's a lot of traveling and diversity in areas.
RoxasLightWithin 2 years ago
Thank you. By their logic, Madden NFL and Halo are RPGs.
4tehhorde 2 years ago
I remember back when I first got this game for the N64. After coming off of Mario 64, this game was like a heaven on earth, especially when I got to this battle.
Ah, the memories...

by far the best battle music in all of the zelda series.
BillyBiggRigger 3 years ago 2
it gave other good music from OoT too, but you made a good choice pickin this one ^-^
MirageBloodrain 3 years ago
man this game was epic but it wasn't a role playing game although the setting is similar to most role playing games
Fartan117 3 years ago
Not really I'd class the game as an action/adventure RPG.
Still epic game, epic music, epic producer
MartyPotatoes 3 years ago
It is a role playing game bud.
Hence, you play the role of Link, Hero of Hyrule.
smokeyvv 3 years ago
An RPG is a video game where you get experience from killing things and level up a character. If a role playing game were a game where you play the role of someone almost every video game would be classified as an RPG.
Fartan117 3 years ago
Ya but Zelda falls under
"action RPG" where there is a live action battle system. But yeah good point I guess.
smokeyvv 3 years ago
agreed.basically the new ninja gaiden it's like Zelda, you fight, you get items, you got some sort of magic, bows, and stuff like that, and i'm sure it's not a RPG so i love the zelda games, but it is not a RPG just because its medieval fantasy ^^
sacapalpavo 2 years ago
Just because you can change the name of the character play as doesn't ultimately make it an RPG.

if you say ocarina is the best zelda game, thats like saying you're an ignorant 12 year old. L2 link to the past noob
sunfyre018 3 years ago
I loved Link to the Past its my fav 2d zelda game. OoT is my fav 3d Zelda game
cullotte3 3 years ago
ocarina was the best im sry but its on gt countdown even, link to the past still was VERY good and prolly rightbehind it but they said it was better.

I've played through Link to the Past like 4 times and I still say OoT is my favorite...and you're saying we're ignorant but yet you say "zomg link to the past is the best noobs"?
UncleJemimahs 3 years ago
but is ok...Ocarina of time is still the best of all...not even twilight princess can beat this game...the closest is The Wind waker
DevilSoma 3 years ago
I love Ocarina, but The Wind Waker was a step in the wrong direction with the graphics, and the story wasn't that great. Ocarina will always be the best. I've played it again and again, and I think I'll probably get the N64 out right now and give it another go. It never gets old for me :)
vinniram 3 years ago
Of course "The wind waker" is not better than Ocarina of time but is a great game and the story is really cool!
The graphics...hmm what can i said!?
Twilight princess kick ocarina in graphic but in other way it don`t even scratch it!...so the graphics is not all!...The story and the gameplay is what will tell you the best of all! oh yes and the music too! BUT WIND WAKER HAS MORE COOL MUSIC THAN TWILIGHT PRINCESS
DevilSoma 3 years ago
i prefer the battle with TWINROVA with the mirror shield but this is the best game i ever played i love it
PD. ocarina of time is not a RPG

wanna bet its mostly adventure but its still an rpg
pocchama1996 3 years ago
Nah, RPG is gaining experience and leveling up, with HitPoints and all, there's nothing like this in zelda, it's an action adventure.
NeoTStyle 3 years ago
so then what would god of war be is it an rpg too lol ok its rpg action adventure platformer all mixed together to make a new genre the name is zelda ok its not rpg its zelda there i just solved all our problems
pocchama1996 3 years ago
Makes sense lol.
NeoTStyle 3 years ago
There are such things as AARPG, action adventure role playing games. It's for those games that are not quite in either type of game. God of War and Orcarin of Time I'd say fall under the action adventure type games.

Wrong. Platformers don't offer that much exploration that only RPGs can.
