I've had that happen before as well. Was flying in a 757 and saw what looked to be a 737 or A320 shoot by us at what looked like only a few hundred feet of vertical separation. This seems to happen a lot? How "normal" is this?
Airspace structure prevents collisions, because aircraft going in different directions are at different altitudes (check out RVSM on google or wiki for more information)
Beyond that, ATC (Air Traffic Control) Prevents collisions also by monitoring the position of aircraft on radar, and making sure they are either at different altitude, or no less than 3 (or 10 sometimes) miles apart.
TCAS is there for if all of that goes wrong too, and will sound alarms in the cockpits with avoiding instructions
woohoo! amazing dude what a speed! Once when i was on Finnair flight to Vienna there was plane pasting us 50 meters down our plane. Man my english sucks.
Holy $h!# look at the closing speed. He's just a little dot and then he's right in front of you.

Very normal. Vertical seperation is provided so no risks involved.

It's very norman, and happens lot. TCAS prevents collissions like this one because it tells both pilots to go in different locations.

Yo sick vid. Other people here see jets like 3 miles away and label it as a close encounter, but this is just awesome

Cool video. That happened once last year when I flew from Calgary to Denver, and then a couple times in February flying from Las Vegas to Vancouver.

that happened to me once too. I was on a Northwest A320 from Minneapolis to Houston when another plane flew right over us

Caraca ! Muito perto. Eu entraria em pânico, achando que iriam se chocar porque de longe não dá pra saber que tá em cima.

Nice footage! I love the MD-11. I used that plane a lot in Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and 2000.
