  • On FireFTP it says 530 incorrect password and now i tryed too many times and now im banned from my server for 1 hour! Any help logging in?

  • Previous video you said you'd mention about which ports to forward and then in the second video it was never brung up.

  • I am having an issue with setting up my FTP - if you have time to assist me. I followed the EXACT directions and mine does not work. Thanks

  • So would this setup work with uploading to file sharing hosts that allow FTP upload. Is it notably faster than ht tp uploading?

  • @TheBlackLounge I don't see why it would be faster really. Also, if you're just uploading via FTP all you have to have is an FTP client, you don't need a server (like my tutorial shows).

  • @WhefXLR Oh ok, thanks. I'll try the client. Some people have been claiming that ftp would be faster, but really I can't see it being much faster either.

  • Would being kind with 30kb per second increase server load too much?

  • @OSDolphin Umm, 30kb/s is REALLY slow.

  • @WhefXLR Well you gave them 10kb/s per second.

  • @OSDolphin As an example.

  • How do I setup the SSL certificate stuff on FileZilla Client instead of on FileFTP? :(

  • @dynamo116 You generate the certificate in FileZilla, or if you have bought one you can specify it in FileZilla.

  • @WhefXLR Hi, So in Filezille Client I went into Site Manager --> New Site --> for hostname I used my hostname.dyndns one, port I left blank, Protocol I chose 'FTP - File Transfer Protocol', Encryption I selected 'Require explicit FTP over TLS', then put in the login information and hit connect, and it shows me the certificate I created on the Server end and I hit OK and it connects, does that sound about right? I didn't have to apply any keys or anything, wasn't sure if I did it right...

  • @dynamo116 Yes, it sounds like you did it correctly. It should be fine.

  • @WhefXLR everything is working, thanks so much!!! :)

  • @WhefXLR In Site Manager, under the "protocol", if I select "SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol" it doesn't ask for encryption type, if I try to connect it doesn't work?? Is that supposed to happen?? The 'Require explicit FTP over TLS' seems to work but not the SFTP - SSH one =\

  • @dynamo116 SFTP/SSH is completely different from TLS/SSL encryption over FTP. SFTP is a function of SSH that is used in place of an FTP server on Linux machines with SSH installed. This tutorial won't help you with that at all.

  • im sorry my comp busted...(its an old laptop with no battery-life and the charger was touchy so it finally timed out.) im using my moms comp to tell you. but i will either be getting a new comp or a new charger... so ill let you know how the stuff works out when i get either of them.

  • they didn't have my model of router up there. so i searched goggle for another and came up with Belkin's own firmware. is that fine?

  • @warthdark You can try it. It's probably still better than what you have now, and it might resolve some issues. However, if that doesn't work there are more alternative firmware solutions that might work for your router. Just try the firmware you found first, though.

  • ok will do ill post my results tomorrow. its l8 here lol.

  • and i just had to reset my router because for some reason it stopped broadcasting the internet but still connected to my laptop. so now all the ports i forwarded are gone. this is the second time this happened i thought i fixed it. i have a Belkin wireless G router. this really isnt going as soothly as it should any ideas why?

  • @warthdark It could just be that you have a shitty router, or you have shitty firmware for your router, or possibly your router is dying. Since upgrading firmware is free and relatively easy I suggest you start there. I suggest you start by trying DD-WRT firmware, Google DD-WRT and find their website. Then go to downloads and search for "Belkin ****" and replace the **** with your router model number. It's probably written on your router somewhere.

  • i cant seem to access it on any other computers. any idea why?

  • @warthdark What error code is it giving you when you try to connect? Does anything appear in the server log?

  • ok tyvm

  • real quick one more thing real quick. my router wants 2 types of ports to forward. inbound and private ports. are they the same numbers?

  • @warthdark I think you only have to forward through inbound ports, but if you want to be safe then go ahead and forward the same ones through both.

  • ok tyvm for all the help. i will definitely go to you for any additional problems :)

  • @warthdark Glad to help you.

  • is that for the router as well as the firewall?

  • @warthdark Yes. As well, if you have any anti-virus firewall you'll want to forward it through that.

  • could you give me a list of the ports i need to have forwarded? and what would i do about the encryption?

  • @warthdark The ports are listed in the tutorial. They are ports 21, then whatever you set the passive ports to be in the FileZilla settings (in my case 3850-3859). If you have encryption enabled you also need to have port 990 or whatever you set it's port to be. However, if you don't remember doing this then don't worry about it, because you probably didn't enable it. Everything is shown in parts 1 and 2 of my tutorial.

  • i got all the programs and i was following your tutorial step by step and instead of getting a welcome message i get this:

    "425 Can't open data connection.

    : //"

any idea what the problem is?

  • @warthdark You either didn't forward your ports properly or through everything correctly or you misconfiguration encryption.

  • Great tutorial man!! first time using filezilla and boom! with your 2 videos i have it up and running and my family in another states is now downloading the files i share! sweet! Thanks! and even though the video is old.. I see you keep responding to comments that's cool man!

  • @mztguitar Glad I could be of service.

  • Thanks for the great tutorial, helped me out loads :)

While using FireFTP if I try to change permissions of a file I get error 504 command not implemented for that parameter which I know seems to be quite common. I'm currently using Windows Vista, is this the problem?

If I try to install something which I would need to change the permissions for, will it do it automatically? If not, is there a way I can change the permissions while still using Windows Vista?

    Thanks in advance!!!!!

  • @TheTizzyTiz I am unsure what you are asking: What exactly are you doing when you try to change permissions of a file in FireFTP? I doubt the issue is that you're on Windows Vista. Also, what do you mean by installing something which you need to change permissions for?

  • @WhefXLR I was following a guide for installing osCommerce which would require me to change permissions of certain files at different points. I right click on a file down the right hand side coloum then properties and choose the permissions but as soon as I click OK the error appears.

  • @TheTizzyTiz If you have your FTP server configured to allow your user full access to the files you're trying to change permissions of then I can't help you. I don't know what the problem is.

  • @WhefXLR Ok, thanks for the tutorial anyway!

  • @WhefXLR I read somewhere that this was a limitation of Windows but I was wondering whether while installing osCommerce the file permissions would be changed automatically (read this too) or whether I would need to find another way of changing the permissions manually.

  • Setup went OK but I am not going through the server for access. Fireftp logs on and password is meaningless. It looks like I have an XP Pro SP3 ftp server enabled somewhere. Where should I look?

  • @zp18zp18 First of all, what do you mean "not going through the server for access?" Second of all, what do you mean by the "password is meaningless?" Again, what does it mean to have "XP Pro SP3 ftp server enabled somewhere?" And finally, look for what?

  • How i reconfigure sir. if the server are getting reformat how can i set up again..with the directories that shared..

    thanks in advance

  • @MrOnetwodave Just copy over the directories you were sharing with people and put them on your HDD again. Then set up the FTP server all over again exactly like you did with this server.

  • well mate thanks a bunch ..worked for me ... u r great :) :)

  • i wanna know how in the F**k i banned myself

  • @funnyangrykid lol.

  • Thank you for the tutorials

  • The tutorial was fantastic the only problem I had was it wouldn't let me log in. I have be doing this for hours now I just want to be able to get this working.

    Mary

  • @mollive1217 It wouldn't let you log in to the server interface or it wouldn't let you log in to your FTP server from your browser/FTP client?

If it's the later please provide your server log for what happens when you attempt to log in via your client/browser.

  • How come the cert doesn't work on any other machine?

  • @011assasin The same way you turned it on except in reverse.

  • sorry, it's just a Win7 context display issue. It's not really write-protected ;o)

So in that case: My CAM can log in but has problems to write.

Strangely is DOES produce subfolders but no files.

  • @HorNet505 Well I don't know what to tell you. :\

  • @WhefXLR

;o) I installed Microsofts IIS with FTP support under Win7 (it's included already) and managed a connection with no proplems at all.

So basically everyone with Win7 just needs to enable the ISS package under SOFTWARE > FEATURES and get a free FTP Server by Microsoft.

  • Good morning without making it expreé j 'ai delete a file on the waiter how they make for the remetre

  • @lahutelepgm ... Did you use Google Translator?

  • Q:

I use the FZserver inside our company network and run a dedicated PC on a static IP. I am able to browse the contents with Firefox using ftp://pc-ip but using an ftp clients gives me the msg "550 access denied" when it comes to the list copmmand (MLSD). I see nothing.

  • @HorNet505 It's possible that you have improperly configured your passive ports, I'd start by double checking that and your port forwards in general.

  • @WhefXLR

hmm, well I have deactivated the PCs firewall and I guess, due to the cam is inside the LAN as well as the PC, there is no othzer firewall.

But I will check out the ports and test.

Another thing that might cause trouble is that the destination folder on my PC is write-protected. I even can't undo this, every time I check the folder property, it's back to write-protected. Strange

  • @HorNet505 If what you mentioned was the case, then it'd be easier to just select a new folder that isn't write protected.

  • Awesome Tutorial... Just one question. I have it set up and I log in just fine... However when I log in to the server both through the FireFTP client through mozilla and through just as an anonymous user I have to hit the "up to higher directory" link twice before it will let me log in and show the files I have shared? Any advice? Again thanks for the help

  • could any1 help me?

i can download and upload files usind the ftp client, but when i try it by a game that i´m making i got this log:

  • hi can not get beyond with other users as I have done,

How come di than to my ftp servers?

  • @hansnielsen1989 Learn better ENGLISH.

  • In my FTP client I get: The software on your host computer has terminated the connection.

    What am I doing wrong?

  • @MMMitta I suggest you look at the logs on your FTP server during the time in which this error occurred and go from there.

  • Very good tutorial! Thanks for the help!:D

  • the BEST ftp tutorial Ive seen so far! great keep it up

  • Thank you for your help. Sorry for interrupting breakfast. I'm in London, going to bed now. It's 23:43pm here! :-) Good morning to you. Will try it at work and see if I have any luck and let you know. Have a good day. Wayne

  • @waynelavarinhas Actually, it's 3:45PM here. I'm on Summer break (off from school) so I stay up until 5AM. :P

  • Thank you for such a fast reply. that was really fast!

I tried using the ftp client program but with no luck. the problem is I am trying to access my home ftp server from work, but my company obviously has some sort of firewall, although I can sometimes access the files? it allows me most cases to browse the files on the ftp server that i've shared but it doesn't allow me to upload, it says permission denied.

  • @waynelavarinhas Sorry for this one not being as fast. I was eating breakfast. ;)

Anyways, it's either because your work has a firewall preventing you (in which case I can't help you) or you haven't given your user permission to upload files to your FTP server. Go to Edit -> Users -> (select your user on the right) -> Shared folders -> (folder(s) you're uploading to) and check "write" and "create" along with everything else. Good luck.

  • HI, thanks for the video. I'm having problems uploading to the Ftp server. How does one go about doing that?

  • @waynelavarinhas Well, first thing you have to get some sort of FTP client like FileZilla Client or FireFTP (the Firefox addon), then you connect to your FTP server via your client and select the files you wish to upload. It should be self explanatory from here, good luck!

  • Thanks for the help. :)

  • Mooch-o's help-o's thank you! :)

  • Very good tutorial, well done and thanks =)

@those that think it's shit, get some basic computer knowledge then come back.

  • Man you are awesome. You have got me all setup on my network. I have a webserver and now have a ftp server. Thanks man. So much.

  • Hey thanks...been tinkering with setting up an FTP server years and could never get it. But combining my previous failures, more research and experimentation- along with this video I finally got it (watching several times). To access the server over the internet I had to get a host name through Dyn DNS (its free) because I have a dynamic IP. I like how you setup the anonymous folder - that is really handy to have. And I'm glad I setup the security certificate because that's important to have.

  • @boosuff I'm glad to hear my video could be of use!

Incase you haven't found it yourself, there should be DDNS section on your router config which makes it so every time you restart it it automatically updates the domain you got from Dyn DNS to whatever your IP is, so you never have to update it manually.

  • Thank you very much. awesome tutorial.

  • by any chance would this be good for makeing a wordpress blog and using fillezilla as a server

  • Thank you so much, very well done on the videos, thank you for sharing, good luck for all.

  • I tried ssl for ftp it's perfectly working on eithernet but externally only FTP works i expected both FTP and FTPS all port and things are opened and after MLSD command i get Can't open data connection.

  • DUDE I GOT IT... yeah so.... its my bad... hehehe, but i learned from it so yeah... well it had to do with the custom ports. on my linksys @ home, I was not seeing there are 2 fields for the port forwarding... I was doing it under single port range and there was an external and internal port.(single port forward). then i thought ooooohhhhh. so I put it on the PORT RANGE! all my problems have been solved... THANK YOU!!!

  • No not trying under the radar im the one who setup the network... its a basic cable internet, connected to a linksys router... no big deal. I forward all ports, everything i can image. I dont know what im doing.... if i dont force the ssl... im good i connect i can transfer and everything. on fireftp im able to create an exception for the certificate but does not work. that 425 keeps coming up... any other ideas?

  • ok, i need help, im getting the 425 Can't open data connection also. i have done everything. cant get it going. just like you without ssl ever thing is ok. but i want to be more secure. i open port 21, 990, made my own custom port range on both sides of firewalls and routers. i dont get it. i even disabled all firewalls. im at work and i have my computer taken over via remote desktop. trying every way possible. following your video and others.

  • Your work may have their network configured to not let you set up an FTP server one way or another. Are you trying to do this under the radar or are you setting it up for the company?

  • im trying to add another folder and its only the first folder that appears, is it a limit for the server?

  • Did you make sure to make aliases for the other folders as well?

If you did, please explain your problem further.

  • ok i fix it now, thanks very much! i have enabled the custom port range in Filezilla, i have forwarded through the windows firewall, but not through the router. in router i have forwarded only the 21 and 990 port. as soon as i forwarded that port range through the router, it worked. thank you very much for your help! bye!

  • the video is great, nice job, however i have a problem! everything works fine, until i enable the SSL, when i do that i can login in the server and i see the folders but i get an error (425 Can't open data connection.

) when i try to access a file! without SSL works fine! oh, and i'm behind a NAT router. please help!

  • If you're going to use SSL you have to use a FTP client, like FileZilla Server or FireFTP and have SSL enabled on that connection.

Also port 990 has to be forwarded through your router and firewall.

Do you have both of these done?

  • i use fireFTP and i enabled both the SSL connection and forwarded the port trough router and firewall.

oh and something else, when someone tries to copy a folder, it does not create the folder structure, but copies only the first selected file

  • Can you copy what the FileZilla Server log says when you try to connect?

  • i try to make some print screens!

  • If I have a webhotel page and link to (and display) files from my personal server, would that get me banned from that webhotel server? Do they generally have an "automatic bouncer" for ftp files?

  • Honestly, I don't know. I haven't had much experience with hotels and their free Internet.

    Good luck. :P

  • I'll put that on my long list of to do's. Thanks for the comment.

  • Thanks for this, works great! I'd been trying to follow on-line guides that missed out a ton of info and never got it working, running great now though.

  • This is a perfect solution for my FTP needs great video

  • awesome vid helped me out a lot thanks!!

    :)

  • nice vid helped my out alot, btw does your computer have to be on for this to work, like can i acess files from antoher comp even when this is off?

  • Thanks for the positive feedback!

And yes, unfortunately your computer does have to be on running the FileZilla FTP Service to work.
