I just love these Shampoo Comercials from the Past..... These days, except for Herbal essenses...seems like the girls rarely even USE the Product and Lather up for the camera...
As a 45 year-old black woman, I tried Prell in the 70's and it smelled wonderful and lathered really nicely, but my hair was jacked up! It was not for African-American coarse hair. LOL!
Actually Prell is high in alkaline which makes it not good for any hair. Some of their advertisements would say that Prell caused hair to have more volume. The high alkaline achieved this as it puffs out the cuticle layer of the hair but, it is not good for the hair at all. A shampoo with a ph in the mid range (seven) or slightly acidic is best.
@Blessed2day you are so right,I remember that if I couldnt find shampoo for black hair in the 60s the next best thing was vo5 it worked allright on black hair.Prell didnt work on most white hair so why would you think it would work on black hair, I forgot blacks used to press the hair with Royal crown and Dixie peach hair dressing and prell would cut that stuff out of the hair, and prell sure used to smell soooo good!
@darkebony LOL! You are right about the Royal Crown! Sometimes I oiled my scalp with Sulfur-8 or Glover's Mane. Can you imagine how awful that smelled when you pressed your hair and then went out in the hot, humid Chicago summers? I would lay my sides down with my grandma's Dippity Doo! It was crunchy but my sides were cute! LOL! Gotta love it!
I used the Prell concentrate only once and it was the worst shampoo I ever used in my life. I felt like my scalp was on fire (apologies to Michael Jackson)
yes the bottles way back then were made out of glass. It would suck because if the bottle fell, it would shatter. Then it would cut your feet and you'd start to bleed. T.T(
oh god i really thought normal bates was going to appear then! scared the crap out of me!

the new prell isn't as good as the old one from back in the 60's....it used to strip everything out of your hair, which was good if you had oily hair

My dad used to use it, because he had short hair for work. I got the idea to use his prell and it dried my long hair to brittle tangled straw.

Prell's not as easily found as it used to be.
My Wal-Mart doesn't carry it, nor do most drug stores in my area. But I found one lone bottle at K-Mart.

Prell was introduced by Procter & Gamble, "in the handy tube", in 1947. This ad first appeared around 1961. Today, Prestige Brands markets it..

Probably the Best of the Prell Shampoo Ads.
Not only do ya get that Classic early-to-middle '60s look, but you also get 2 for 1, with the Hottie that walks in getting lathered up, too!

When I was a kid I would "do" this commercial as I washed my hair with prell. Now it just comes in a bottle like Pert and Finesse.
