"If you see a plane with white stripes on a black background, it's the RAF. If you see a plane with black stripes on a white background, it's the USAAF. If you see no plane at all, it's the Luftwaffe."
A common joke amongst the Wehrmacht from June 1944 to May 1945
@puzleman1 The planes in that scene are actually Bf 108s, which were two-seat trainers. Priller and his wingman actually flew Fw 190A-6s for their glorious strafing run, which were equipped with two machine guns and four cannon apiece.
@GoodwoodAlpha You are mostly right but the BF 108 was four-seated and originally build as a light travelling plane. The Luftwaffe actually used them as trainers and for courier- and connection-services.
I know that Priller and the other pilot were not themselves shot down. I read, by the way, Priller´s book about his time as a pilot.
I answered to hollywoodwerewolf who had written that so many of their comrades were shot down over England etc. I meant it in a general way, that is to say that Germany was the aggressor of WW II and that German planes were shot down because of that war.

Yes it was good there was only two of them. So many of their comrades were shot down over England or swallowed by the destruction in Russia.

They were shot down in response to their aggression.

@realrooreal
They were not shoot down, the one who strafed the beach, was "Pips" Priller, one of germany´s leading aces and he survived the war

Thank heavens there were only two of them, and no Panzer brigade at all. Otherwise the Allies would have found themselves in dire straits.
