  • It was very busy until the re-development of Charlestown Square in the late 80s. Then the earthquake, & the city centre has struggled to recover.

  • Everyone looks so lean. No fast foods to get fat on!

    Ah! I remember it well! I was born in 1946 1 year after this was filmed but in my boyhood

    Years all these images flood back . Great city, great time!!!

    Their unions were strong, and talking about nationalisation.

    They made steel and ships.

    They had trams and train lines to everywhere.

  • the city doesn't look that different. i'm 15 now and my grandmother was 15 in 1945
