It was very busy until the re-development of Charlestown Square in the late 80s. Then the earthquake, & the city centre has struggled to recover.

Excellent documentary of my home town.
Ah! I remember it well! I was born in 1946 1 year after this was filmed but in my boyhood

Their housing cost one day's pay a week.
Their unions were strong, and talking about nationalisation.
They made steel and ships.
They had trams and train lines to everywhere.
Good job capitalism, good job.
