My man Red Alert in the video!! Still remember when this song came out in the late 80's living in Bronx. Everyone was bumping this song. A time when you could have fun with hip hop and no half naked ladies or cars with rims. Great thing about this video was that it was really simple to produce!!!!!
I was suppose to cut school to be a Xtra in this video, I see s couple of familiar classmates. Back then you either wore gold or wood jewelry. I opt for the gold. Dela soul was ahead of their time. The first organic go green rap artist.
I miss it too thz how rap supose 2 b its ment to touch our soul explore and explore the instruments, rhythum, its mental, free music is not the same today, i really miss thz type:)
Notice....No Gold Chains....No bitches....No Hoe's.....No Gangsta BS. What u have is Party, Fun,...Hip Hop!! No Gun flossin'...A time when it was cool to smile in videos....It was all about consciousnesses....
@oneluv72 there was more positive than negative. black men seemed to actually enjoy being around black women and treating them in a respectful manner!
@jwh1999 What shit are you talkin? Theres more popular black music than ever now. And frankly, as a white person i think these "dumb white crackas" would sign more current black music because it sells. Its a shame most current popular black music sucks dick, just like current white music sucks dick too.
@mrlee192 Because the one's who run the music biz now are not interested in quality and talent, just looks that's why music is dead and just about every artist sound the same!!
Hell yeah--I used to dance to this video and the song back in the day every chance I got--I was an MTV-BET-watching fool back in the day--hell, I 'm old enough to remember when MTV didn't even show rap videos (until 1988, the year it's broke real big in the mainstream) yeah, I'm old, decrepit and ancient, but I can still dance my sillt ass off! A great reminder of what rap was like when it was still relatively innocent sounding--and before female rappers got reduced to mere sex objects onscreen.
For the life of me, I have no idea why Monie Love didn't blow up bigger than she did. She should have at least played a starring role on "Living Single". She would have made a perfect addition.
Damn, the album version is much better. Good thing De La always put the superior version in the album. That goes for "Saturdays", "Ring Ring Ring" and this song.
Will we ever have a time like this again? I was 12 in 1991 and hip-hop was great. I loved Native tongues" Tribe and De La Soul, Jungle Bros., Monie Luv, Queen Latifah. Old School is the best .
@cekc70 We're the same age man and I am so greatful for youtube and Pandora so I can get my old school fix. You'll never ever see groups like Das Efx, Lordz of the Underground, Black Moon or Fu-Schnickens again. Being original is dead, it's all about sounding exactly like that guy that's hot. I remember when Hip Hop wasn't mainstream and these guys paved the way for todays rappers to make it sound like shit. There'd be a lot less Hip Hop fans if all the originators all sounded alike.
What I love about this song is females was able to step in and give their input on the situation without showin her ass. Puttin Monie in the Middle. lol.
