  • I've seen inside the Blue Man PVC pipes from their 1st DVD. They have drilled in "pickups" to the walls of the top of the PVC i guess to amplify the sound. Does your set up have pickups? Very nice by the way.

  • hi i am trying to do this...can you answer a few questions for me? how did you calculate pitches? how much was the piping?

  • @IamaColdplaygirl The site i used to build this was pvc. natetrue. com This small diameter pipe probably cost me around $100. If you want to use larger pipe, it will probably cost 2x as much

  • dommage que les tuyaux ne produise pas un meilleurs son .

Tu devrai utiliser du diametre de 80mm

  • Dude, I wanted to build an instrument like this in high school. I even bought a bunch of big expensive PVC, but then I just never got around to finishing the project. You are awesome for actually building this instrument! And your playing is really unique. I want to hear more! All around congratulations on a job well done here!

  • how long are the tubs like from what to what??? (X ft - X ft)

  • thats awesome.. im guessing the colors are how you know which notes are which right?

  • try a pair of really cheap flip flops, they are made of the right kind of material, and they are funny

  • Club Nowere

  • lmao awesome!

  • at1:02 to1:25 it sounls like you are trying to play a "what iv done , by linkon park

  • its part of the song.

  • try using 3 inch wide it will give it a more clear sound but nice job

  • I wanted to use 2 inch, but the small stuff i used was all i could afford :(

  • como puedo construir uno de esos??

  • Recognising bits of Blue Man Group parts in there =P

    Nicely done though. Kudos!

  • What did you use for the mallet/paddle thingy??

  • Read description ;-)

  • It's really good you should look at vides called my pvc instrument. Essepically the battle of the bands one! It's amazing!

  • What song did you play before PVC IV?

  • Club nowhere

  • sick instrument mate.

It will be cool to see you bust out a medley of sorts like snubbyj

  • Check RHYTHMTANDEM for another rare instrument.

  • Ignore everybody calling you a nerd!

    your awesome dude.

I remember when you first posted the link on BML.

    BMGLPVC

  • I just made mine. Mine was inspired by Drum Corp quints. I used 4 inch, 3 inch and two inch. I love your video dood!

  • Why do you call him a nerd!? You jealous!?

  • yes im jealous that im not that nerd with a super sexuel instrument.

  • Are you playing club nowhere

  • Awesome video dood! I love seeing people use industrial related things as percussion instruments. I have several videos of me doing industrial percussion on my page. Gas drums, oil drums, etc... Rock on dood and don't stop.

  • how did u get it into tune?

  • By altering the length of the pipes and pipe diameter produces the different notes.

there are a few simple physics equations that work out what harmonic is produced at different lengths..

  • hook it up to a mic through an amp!you could even get better sopund if you put the amp through a comp perhaps create sustain.

  • might be a good idea to space them apart. maybe practice on hitting it with the full spatula(?) every time, but beyond that, wow! *starts thinking where I can get some pvc pipe*

  • why does it look like u used 1" pvc?

  • Because I did :P. It was cheaper and lighter and I didn't have a lot of money at the time. Plus It would have been hard to carry 2 inch pipe on my shoulder while riding my bike XD

  • amazing!

  • rock, rock, rock. this is great. i could see you adding pickups and routing thru some zany effects maybe? it's a great effort man, even cosmetically it just look good like... love from Ireland

  • dude if having talent got you laid...the world would be so much different, and your balls would be drained

  • THAT WINS MY NOMINATION FOR FUNNIEST COMMENT ON YOUTUBE FOR 2008!!!!! Classic.

  • You're great!

  • ahah all the people calling him gay are people who wil lnever acomplish anything in life... or very little

and yes i know i spell bad

  • kid that was fucking awsome!!!!!!!!! dude you be doing me a huge favore buy telling me how you made that. Good stuff _Rudy

  • lolzz

  • Nice spelling, genius.

  • What are you hitting the pipes with? Paintbrushes? o__o That's what it looks like to me.

  • *Updated description with info. Everyone is asking me that lol

  • that song is VERY similar to blue man groups song called...IDK ...but its busicly sowed tempo

  • Yeah, this shit is Aweomse....or gay...whatever.

  • soooooo...

  • :40 seconds, Yay for drumbone! (i've seen BMG 3 times. Great job with this, man! Aweomse work!)

  • You save very much space ... if you were obtaining broader pipes it you had been easier...

  • that was great! *5

  • I like the piece you're playing. The tone is great, too. Nice work, my man! I'm inspired.

  • I'd call it inspired by BMG, who, by the way, are the greatest musicians of all time :)

  • This was Club Nowhere.

  • love it mate ...any chance you could make 1 for me?

  • Im pretty sure they are paint Brushes

  • u should play the mario theme song on that

  • what are you using as mallets?

  • wooden spoons it looks like

  • Wooden spoons would make horrible clacking sounds and no music.

  • They are made out of that black interlocking excercise mat stuff. I cut out paddle shapes and then wrapped duct tape around them to give them rigidity. I put a piece of cardboard at the neck for extra support.

  • very nice covers dude.....i give you props

  • 1:00 COOL!!! really nice man!

  • hey good job, almost sounds like a twangy bass to me. keep it up.

  • Lol yeah, I'm a super nerd! You have no idea how nerdy I really am...

  • Nerds rule the world. Trolls just fail.

  • but a piano can't produce the same unique sound lol, i love pvc keyboard instruments

  • you need something cooler...

    like a grand piano...

wish i had one(i have been playing for about 8yrs now)

    fyi:

if you want one, its like buying a brand new pickup truck...

the nicest pianos can cost as much as a FERRARI...

  • I play piano too. We sold our (very old) upright piano for a MUCH nicer sounding yamaha digital piano. Sounds like a top quality grand piano. I'll put up a video sometime of me playing it.

I know how much pianos cost, especially if you get into the 9 foot grands lol.

  • almost sounds like its strings nice

  • Looks well how you are playing it now.. but i would say you need a bit more practice. keep on doin the stuff

  • aww it looks so small :-) great sound from it for its size tho. good job!

  • what are the paddles made out of?

  • Black interlocking rubber floor mats cut into paddle shapes and then reinforced with duct tape.

  • his tubulum is one of the best ones I ever found in youtube. The synth-like sound is the best, and quite impressive for the size!

  • ehh

  • Another tubulum? Wow, these things must be pretty common. Now I wanna build one.

  • nice job! i'm working on building a pvc instrument myself right now

  • this pvc |||?

  • Well the last part is. The first part is club nowhere

  • very nice. very very nice.

  • pendejo culiao chanta

    saco e wea

    te crei seco..

    conchatuputamadre

no entendi niuna wea gringo tonto...

    jojojojo

  • pendejo culiao chanta saco e wea te crei seco.. conchatuputamadre no entendi niuna wea gringo tonto... jojojojo he said: stupid a** b****, something offensive i dont know yet, f***your b**** mom, you dont understand what i am saying, stupid gringo (greencoat) hahahaha
  • Pretty neat. The tube size is pretty small though!

PS. the Natetrue site is 7 years old. Its probably not going to be updated.

  • would have been better if u made the tops shorter and the bottoms longer with curved pvc joints to make the sound more bassy like BMG do, but its ok as an amatuer goes :)

  • sweet stuff dude. Inspired me to make my own drum. (vid is on my page). More models are sure to come! Keep it up!

  • not bad but steady it out and speed it up a little... and from the 2nd part up, make ur right hand louder

    cool tho

  • ur good but ur no blue man

  • could u email me that spread sheet u have of your notes.? ill send u a private message with my email

  • Use the formula:

    length = speed-of-sound / frequency

"I use the metric system everywhere. The speed of sound is 343.8 meters per second at 20 degrees C and 40% relative humidity, it goes up a little bit with humidity and a lot with temperature (at 23 degrees C, it's 345.7 meters per second). But using the first figure we get length = 343.8 meters / frequency

so for an A of 440 hz, the length would be 781 millimeters."

  • Very interesting! Thanks for your input, this is something I've wondered for a long time.

  • pretty good, lol i don,t have the coordination for that i am impressed

  • Good one! HAven't seen the BMG yet but hopefully will do so soon.

  • i'm very impressed

  • Very cool

  • Very cool! How did you tune the thing?

  • you don't tune it, each pipe is a certain length and the difference in length dictates the difference in pitch

  • Thanks. I knew they were different lengths, I saw the Blue Man Group last month, and they blew me away. I was wondering if there were any specifics in the length of the tubes. I guess just going from short to long would work good enough.

  • Just make sure they're all of the same diameter and thickness. Then "tune" it one time by cutting it and comparing to a well tuned instrument. I'm assuming the PVC colored tips correlate with each notes. The reason for multiples of the same color is octave difference?

  • Yep! That way its easy to play, especialy with fast songs. And each color is a different note and all of the pipes that are the same color are the same note, just different octaves.

  • (ww)w dot bmgconstruction101 dot c (om)

  • Yep, thats a great site, but I actually used nate trues site and plans for mine.

  • nate trues was more useful as it had the formula, im impresd how good i osunds as u hav thin pipes, go 2 bmgconstruction101 and look at the instructions, check out my instrument, im screen names apocalypse_p1ease

  • Nate true had a mistake is his formula and my dad pointed that out and sent him an email. Never got a reply. =\

  • It was quite a pain, I used a spreadsheet found on this site: devices(dot)natetrue(dot)com/pvc/pvcphase1.htm and then I cut them a little bit longer than specified. Then I used an electric (guitar) tuner and cut off a teenie bit at a time until it was perfect. It took a long time. Quite a long time.

  • Thanks! This is an awesome instrument, and I've been wondering about the math since I frst saw BMG..or maybe when I was a kid playing with PVC. Haha! Anyways, quite an accomplishment and I hope to build a replica someday soon.

  • awesome

  • very neat.

  • Yeah, that was cool. Nice one.

  • ahaha sweet. the bass notes sound really cool

  • BLESSINGS YOUR WAY LITTLE MAN!

  • last time i heard one of these playing, i was picking up cow dung on my neighbor's farm, good work.

  • okay.. he's actually sorta playing PVC IV. props.

  • paint yourself blue and you might have something here

  • should try filling some with water see what that does to the sound, good job!

  • There is a larger scale one of these in the Sciencentre(kind of a kids adventure/learning place that is really fun for grown ups) , Brisbane, Australia.

  • dude, very cool. u rock!

  • Can you play Axel F?

  • lol thats wicked

  • are those paint brushes? An also, how do you make that? I want to make one.

  • you could be a millionaire

  • what is that

  • Haha, its a pvc instrument, the thing blue man group uses for their music.

  • Amazing invention. If you ever get this patented, I will certainly buy one.

  • i liked the riff at 1:04

  • COOL! It's like the BLUE MAN GROUP! I love them! You rock man! That is SERIOUSLY one of the coolest things. It so cool you MADE that! I love the way it sounds! Im gonna see, I hope you have more videos like this, you should record this thing in a studio!

  • lol thats what i thought!

    nice instrument

  • I like the main PVC song on their Audio album. you redid it really nicely. Better than I did. =)

  • this is pretty rad. awesome tone

  • Hah, you're right. This makes me want to see BMG again. Good job.

  • seriously dude. that sounds badass. very cool indeed

  • That's wicked!

I wish you had been in Depeche Mode.

Seriously it has a pretty good softsynth sound to it

  • omg. You haveee to make this a public instrument. It would sell miiiiillions. You'd be a miiiiillionaire. lol I'd buy one. :-)

  • stolen from blue man group! = P

  • holy crap this is awsome...gooo blue man wannabe :)

  • you're good :)

  • Awesome. Reminds me of the Blue Man Group!

  • dude this is the best one I've seen so far!

  • what do you tap these pipes with?

  • Paintbrushes it looks like o.O

  • Interlocking excercise mat cut into paddle shapes.

  • I saw this at a Blue ban concert, of course it was a lot louder and quite a bit more complex, but you've got the right idea. Nice job

  • wow this is crazy. it has sorta like a techno feel to it haha very creative! GOOD JOB!! [:

  • if played a bit better with more classical style with a sitar it would be the most awesome piece of music ever (breath of fire IV style)

  • lol now mass produce that (and make it bigger~)

    and sell it on ebay!

    *first buyer!*

  • Nice Sound.. Almost sounded like the Blue Man Group. Ive gone backstage and played the pipes. It's alot of fun. You've made a complete replica. Way to go dude. Keep it up

  • Very nice try on PVC IV! What diameter dit u use for the pipes? How many notes are there one it?

  • I used thin walled 1 inch diameter pipes. That was the biggest thin-walled pipe homedepot had. I have 23 notes from the low E up two octaves on an e scale to another E. I wouldn't have been able to have that many notes if I used much bigger pipe.

  • coolio! i made something similar but i used 50mm diamter pipes instead and used a lower octave, ill post wen its fully done, and when i learn how to plat, rofl! u put my playing to shame

  • He should totally play Exhibit 13, that song's the best for a PVC solo

  • The paddles look like paint brushes... neato!

  • Not bad! Sounded almost exactly like the one performed by BMG. What are the paddles made out of?

  • They are made out of that black interlocking excercise mat stuff. I cut out paddle shapes and then wrapped duct tape around them to give them rigidity. I put a piece of cardboard at the neck for extra support.

  • How long did it take you to make it? I'm making one right now, aswell as a backpack tubulum.

  • Took me about a week for the basic thing, I did it over spring break. Since then I painted it black, painted the pipes and stuff like that.

  • probably some kind of rubber or foam rubber.
