hi there nice videos you have i am currently in college doing film and i have to do a stop motion short film and i have decided to use a freddy kreuger action figure for stop motion is there any videos online showing hot to make a minature boiler room? thanks
you can not only use your pen to mark out your floor plans, or mark your cut lines, you can also use them when they run out of ink as pipes or cannon barrels. much sturdier than straws. cheaper than buying pvc/styrene pipe (if you buy the cheap $3 for a bag of 50).
make sure you get the plain ones, not the ones embossed or engraved with company logos!
Warhammer 40k has taught me to never waste anything... I have made a shack out of some cardboad, spray paint, and boltgun metal... I have also made a small chaos temple and now I am getting chaos space marines so that my friends can try out a new campaign I'm making!
I Made a 16"x16" Ork fort using balsa wood also train set scenery like trrees walls etc and on another note i made an ork battlewagon using a WWII tank kit
i find styrafoam really usefull uve used it on many of my projects im a big terrain maker and enjoy making it in the past i have made peices such as simple rocky aras to snow outposts and bunkers my current project is an ork waaagh banner from the pc game dawn of war, awsome game and love your videos!! :D
"paints from gw, why because they are the best paints in the world" no reaper is ;o). 1:38 is the building from "mini balcony" unpainted, thanks for the tut. (white foamboard, textured paint, grey paint, brown paint, metal bench, thanks)
i made some walls from ordinary inch-thick sheets of polystyrene covered with paper-mache (sp.), it didn't go too well, but i'm relatively new to terrain making. A revised edition may (or may not) turn out better, but they are great starting materials for a budget project.
Also, with the baking soda, I find that if you just use it by itself, it tends to discolor too easily over time. Mix it with alittle bit of watered down white glue to paint onto the base, then sprinkle a very light layer ontop just to give it a fluffy look. You can also use flower on top as it doesnt discolor as eaisly.
green scowering pads. Fold them in half, roughen up the edges, and paint them with a couple drybrushings of lighter green to make some quick and easy hedges. More useful for fantasy, but still handy. also, square toothpicks make a good wooden fence.
crushed sweetners is always good 4 snow and you can harden paper 2 go harder than wood so thats good and u can apply water to partialy corogated cardboard(bits o paper torn of it) and use waterd down paint to make a melted effect (dry brush chaos black to hole wall and more aroun melted areas)
Polystirene is awesome for making walls, i watched miniwargaming's tutorial about stone walls and it's really good but i gotta paint it but i am rubbish at painting :C
i asked my mum if i could have some polystirene we had but she "it goes every where!". i was like but i neede to make terrain. i had a good idea and all. i might try the rust effects one
Take the styro pieces from an appliance box (fridge, washer, dryer ect..) Those peices by themselves are endless potential for terrain. The shapes are very unique and have an almost gothic quality to them, very usefull for 40K or Warmachine. Just go to Home Depot of where ever they sell Appliances and just ask for the scraps, there will be tons!
I disagree about GW paints. Reaper has some fantastic paints available. I'd also recommend not breaking the bank on terrain. Rather have a lot of paint for cheaper than pricey paint that will only last for a few projects.
to each man his own but I'm sorry i hate reaper paint you wast alot cause it in a squeeze bottle and the paint drys in the tip of the bottle but i do like there silver over GWs (looks cooler)
this is the generic stuff you will need for just about EVERY piece of terrain you ever make
tools etc and general stuff
so yes your kind of dumb to be making terrain without at least half of the tools here and most of the materials ie styrofoam .... it can be anything shape it into the walls of some castle or a cave entrance etc
@Haydeez64 - "Everything on the planet ever." So true. It's magical how slapping the most random things together with glue and then coating them with paint will transform them into soaring Eldar towers, solid Imperial fortifications, or rickety, rusty Ork Mek shacks.
take styrofoam and cut the 4 inche by 4 inche block of it into a crater shape. add on ballasst or sand. then put realistic water by woodland scenics into it. you now have a cespool. feel free to put in random painted weapons or dead guys into the water as it dries.
cut up sprues look like bricks piled up, if you have a figure case the pieces of foam you punch out for it to hold your figures are great to build walls with, old tissue boxes are starting points for buildings, and obviously cans of all types are useful for all sorts of stuff.
shoe boxs work well for random stuff plus you get lots of what you want. i once made a base of a normal 1in, 1 and a half in, and 2 and a half in and had plenty left over.
hey i really appreciate this video its really inspired me. ive got an i dea for a fortress assault battle field that when i get done ill try and post so that people can see thx
i had a neat idea for some things for making your terrain and bases more convincing, i cut tiny pieces of wire off of a long strand, and i suggest u use thin wire for this, and i painted them a brass color to give them the effect that they were empty shells from the dudes guns
I was looking at the comments and what about all the people like matt and them (sorry i dont know your names) that make the vast armys and insane terrane??? they deserve some credit!!!
This guy speaks sense i go to hobby craft to get stuff for buildings- On the other hand he think carnifex is kl der not they're ugly stupid inhuman low lifes
If you use some poly cement to melt the cut up bits of sprue into more random shapes, just adds a bit of variety, instead of all the sprue-rubble looking almost identical.
great tips man ty im just starting out and i have found it very fun to make futaristic terain because i used to make lord of the rings so ty for the tips
also good things to use are, u know the game pic up sticks! use the sticks from that,i did, and then also u can use that plastic tubing (i forgot what its called) and its always good to have a hot glue gun!
you get styrofoam (called polystyrene)from home depot / lowes type stores. It is used as insulation for walls and comes in large sheets about 4'x8' of varying thickness.
GW paint is good, but other companies make good paint like vallejo paints. GW, vallejo, and similar are night and day better then the generic paints you find in craft stores though. Use generic paint for undercoats and large terrain areas, quality paints for minis.
its really expensive to play mini war gaming...the men and the paints and scenery etc...but its still very fun and I will keep playing...my parents think it is a waste of money because Im not good at the game and its expensive and no one I know doesnt play warhammer
moon sand yes that kid sand crap works amasimly well but you have too bake it for like 20 mins so it works (note only small projests will work withit)
I play 40k, and by using some spare bases and corners cut off of sprues, you can make pretty nifty land mines just cut a corner off of a sprue, or use some other small dot and glue it ontop of the circular base. Paint them accordinglly, and you can make a quick little minefield!
I would add to the list: Bass/ Balsa wood Foamcore/ gatorboard (can be expensive- I have a cheap source) Plastic sheet (Plastruct) Brass and Aluminum rod/tubing Celuclay (awesome for groundwork!) Toothpics Spackle or wood putty Pastels chalks Old toys - The list really is endless!
but i do know for a fact that they let their PVA glue sit out in the sun for a little bit to dry it out, and somehow that helps in the "water effect" process
use bits from sprues that you won't use not every model has to carry around more stuff than it needs (even though it looks cool but then you woudn't get the cool bits for your terrain)
Absolute must-have terrain tool: Hole punches of various sizes, I have 3. Perfect for rivets. I can make rivets as small as the round thing on a Boltgun.
I know games workshop paints are the best kind but there is so little in the bottle it would take me like 8 months the finish a small piece of terrain as the paints are really expensive and hold so little. and I know with oil paints a little goes a long way but it gets really annoying that there is so little
i got a lot more: hot wire foam cutter, PVC pipe, spackling paste or spackle, large paintbrush (the kind used to paint walls or any other large things), empty soda or soup cans, PVC cutters, cardstock, plasticard, spare knife blades, plastic cement, superglue accelerator, hacksaw, full cardboard boxes (not cut or chopped up), notebook, bottom half of a plastic soda bottle, random PVC connectors, balsa wood, foam bowls, old computer parts, your codex, and something to play music or CD's
Could you maybe make a video showing us how to mkae game boards, i'm new to warhammer and have no set, just my dinning-room table. Could you make a video showing us how to make some sets (really good and complicated or simple and ... welll, not so good???) Thanks!
I find sponges can be fairly useful as well, I use them occaisonally to make a rust effect (i.e. Put the paint on the sponge) and can give a little authenticity to your terrain peice.
The GW paint part made me laugh[and yes GW paints are the best paints you can buy].
Here are some materials i use to make terrain that you didn't mention[i am currently building a tower for a wizard school].PVC piping,cd cases,an old basketball, chewing gum, green stuff.

I know games workshop paints are the best kind but there is so little in the bottle it would take me like 8 months the finish a small piece of terrain as the paints are really expensive and hold so little. and I know with oil paints a little goes a long way but it gets really annoying that there is so little
