He is a good tenor drummer but im 12 and i play the pipes and my name is tyler fry and 1 of the tenor drummers in my band always give my stick for this :S is still a really good tenor though :)
His An InsirationTo Me Im 14, Andd Just To Be Someway Like Him(Whch WuddBe Impossible) :P Wud Be Great :) HIS AMAZING! Anyone That Posts Bad Comments On Any Of His Videos Are Either Not Being Taught How To Play Tenors Right Or Just Looks Up Pipeband To See Girls Or (Guys) In Kilts And dont get the satisfation! :P Or dont play tenors at all :/
@junopiper Obviously you do nothing musically - any half decent musician would instantly see the musicality in what Tyler Fry does. His style of drumming not only has it's rightful place in pipe bands, it is the benchmark by which all modern tenor drumming is set. Not surprising to hear ignorance like that from a (probably crap) piper though.

The flourishes are simply not in synch with the music, but that may well be due to the fact that the video is not in synch with the audio here. (I've noticed that to be the case with many other YouTube pipe band videos - a bit off from what's happening visually. Still, I don't get flourishing. It's almost like synchronized swimming, pointless and silly. TF has evidently made a living,"name and fame" with it, which kinda boggles the mind when you realize that he's not doing anything musically.
they actually are in time. they work really really well with the music the video is just behind with the music. because when i watch the video from my computer and not from youtube its different he is right on.

Okay. So that explains the synchronization aspect. But I've seen flourishing when it's in sync and it still doesn't seem to reflect what's going on in the pipe tune. It's like there's no rhyme or reason to the flourishing and it just doesn't match or correspond to or correlate with what the pipe tune is doing. I'm speaking generally of flourishing, and from what I've seen from TF it's no different. Technically, in terms of skill, he may be great; but in terms of artistry I just don't get it.
Would someone kindly explain to me how what TF's doing in this video in any way visually represents the music being played? I do not get it; it makes zero sense to me. I don't understand tenor flourishing in general. I know these pipe tunes inside and out and the flourishing of tenor drummers never seems to be in synch with or match or correspond to the piping. Does anyone else feel the same way? I don't get it!
pretty sure its traditional. bass drummers used to flourish until they started using the more bulkyish mallet. a lot of times also tenor drummers will not play as much rythym in the first repeat of the part. its just something that was developed and used in the tenor drumming music. and actually he pretty much is dead in sync with the piper considering hes the worlds best. also notice he only flourish's when hes not playing as complicated rythyms
You're mostly correct there. Originally tenors were flourishing only with no actual playing being done. Its changed to where now there is less and less Bass Drum flourishing, and more playing tenors as well. Tyler is awesome, I just not into the goofy faces and body movements, but then again, I can't flourish like him so he's still well up on me.

I have been listening to bagpipe music for about 20 years now, as a drummer and as a beginning piper and as just a listener who enjoys this kind of music. I hum many of these melodies to myself all the time; it is my favorite kind of music in the world, and I think I have a pretty good "feel" for it. However, for the life of me I cannot see how what Tyler's doing in this video in any way matches or corresponds to or visually represents or connects to the pipe tune being played.
Its just advanced flourishing, i know what you mean though, i remember playing battle of the somme, etc down the street and it was, doubles, paradiddles with flourishes in the middle and ends, but this is just more complicated. Marching tunes were always very straight forward structured < I think thats what im trying to say. Whereas this is just artistic creativity.
Cameronian Rant I think. Great strathspey. Tyler is the best tenor drummer. His flourishing is quality. I went to one of his weekends and hes a good lad too. Amazing technique and a relly nice guy.
I worked with Tyler, Hoss, Jim Kilpatrick and John Fischer this weekend at the Summerside Drums workshop...They are INCREDIBLE! All Pipe band drummers should go to every workshop they can to learn - these guys are legends.
IM good friends with Jamie Daniels, another really great tenor drummer. Just spent the last 6 weeks training with her... She's not into the world Pipe band competitions right now...she was, but now she is a school music teacher.
I'm pretty sure that's Blair Brown, also with Shotts. His brother Graham also plays snare and his brother Glenn is a GREAT piper. Their mother Gail Brown is a world class piper (and judge) herself.
i know tyler, he's a great guy, he comes to Uruguay from time to time with bob worral, he's great too, they give us (i'm in the southern cross pipe band and i play the pipes) workshops, they are really great guys, though tyler is a bit bussy now, we still talk to him and bob, and they come almost every year
OMG I love him sososososososososo mucho!! I went to the Masters of the Scottish Arts thing at Benaroya hall and he was there!! I love the expression he gets on his face when he is concentrating! HE IS SO CUTE!! I LOVE YOU TYLER!!
such an inspiration in tenor drumming, this guy is awesome, keep up the good work tyler :D <3 xxx
