Your heading states "Perfect exposures, The Histogram". Sorry but what has the histogram have to do with perfect exposures. Exposures are controlled by the shutter and diaphragm in the camera. What you are indicating is digital manipulation. This is the same as printing negatives where 'burning and dodging' used to happen in the darkroom. The histogram has nothing to do with exposure.
Fantastic video - thanks so much! Keep the music, it does help keep videos more entertaining just drop it down a few dB so it doesn't compete with your voice. :-)
By far the best core explanation of of a camera's histogram I have come across to date. Just from this video I finally understand how to read an RGB histogram as well. It pulled everything together for me. Thanks
I love the music! But I certainly feel that it dominates the audio. If I just listen to the left earbud, your voice is loud enough, but in the right ear all I hear is music - no voice. I think you made a good choice to include it, it just recorded funny. It would be fine at a lower volume and with your voice audible in both ears. Fantastic introduction! I would like to incorporate something similar into a photography lesson for children. You inspired me!
Tried listening, but the music was too distracting. Will try to disable the music, which is predominately on the right channel. Unfortunate, because this seems to be an excellent tutorial, but it's difficult to concentrate with the music. Sorry.
Also missing is several caveats warning there is no such thing as a perfect histogram or that you should be striving to create one. It all depends on subject matter, lighting, etc.. Also missing is the fact many cameras don't offer a histogram or if they do it is AFTER taking the shot, which renders them next to useless aside from seeing what you done wrong.
The point is it IS very distracting to have music playing while somebody is attempting to teach something. Especially true if the music is too loud and not your style. The "tutorial" is long winded and actually teachs little. What he took 6 minutes to do I could have done in one minute. Worse, you're left to hunt for part 2. What's missing is HOW to fix over/under exposers, and what happens in Photoshop when you adjust the histogram.
thank you for making this video. it's very informative. it's unfortunate some people just can't appreciate good things and only see what's they see as bad, always have something to complain. and they are not paying viewers. :-)
My Canon 5D Mark II has the ability to show the Red Green and Blue (RGB) histograms. It also has the ability to adjust/tint these colors in addition to Magenta which of course does not have a histogram. Not being an artist, could you give some pointers on how the Magenta tint adjustment plays into the color schemes e.g. adding more Magenta tint add allow you to mix the RGB colors and come up with say more "yellows" in your picture?
Sorry to ask you this dumb question. What happens when the pic is a colored one. Does that mean dark colors will get stacked towards the black side of the graph? I'm new to photography.
Thank you for making the tutorial, even though I understand histograms, I still learned something. I didn't realize there were 256 shades on the histogram between complete black and complete white. Also I didn't realize each line were pixels stacked on top of each other. Thank you for making the tutorial. Just wanted to leave a positive reply to show appreciation, it takes time to make a tutorial.
I don't know why people are complaining about music, it's just fine. I mean, I didn't give too much attention to it, I was looking at video and listening what you were speaking.
Thanks for histogram explanation, you did it well. ;)
I guess what people are trying to say is this, The information is good, however the background music is a bit too overpowering and makes it hard to pay attention to what you are saying. Imagine going to a classroom where the teacher is trying to teach you however the PA system is playing a song that is just a touch quieter than the teachers voice. Dont be Pissed. People are telling you the truth. Yes free, however it would of been a simple fix to fade out the music after the intro.
If you don't like the music, bail. It's a FREE video so you get what you pay for. If you can suffer through the video, you'll learn something. If you can't be bothered, please don't complain to me.
While I stuck it out for the content, it was actually the muted speech/vocals that were part of the track that I found distracting and detracting from the narration. Much, much lower mix, or even different music appropriate to the content would be an improvement in the future.
This is the most accurate and simple explanation of historgam in my opinion. I also agree that the music being loud on the right channel and him not as loud on the left channel not helping. :)
Sorry about the music! The people have spoken so I've taken it out from all future videos. I figured that I needed to spice things up - hence the music.
All you need is a great tut (which you seem to have done). Music for intro/outro/non-commentary would be more effective. Good luck with future videos.
Sorry, I can't focus with the music. I'm sure its a nice vid, but repost without music please.

This is the BEST explanation of the histogram, especially because you explain the y-axis of the graph! Others just explain the x-axis!

I think you made a small misstake:
When you were talking about the White in your image, and blown highlights, you draw the corresponding bar to maximum right, but low.
Blown highlights, or anything where there's too much of, will reach OUTSIDE the scale (vertical).
