  • Wow, a great man and a wonderful talent! When I was a little kid I used to listen to vinyls of him, and Carlos Montoya. It was probably why I picked up the guitar.

  • I wonder how many people know about the letter Segovia sent to Emilio Pujol during the WWII saying that he hoped Hitler exterminated all jews...

  • please end all the bad words my mother may see this site and be offended. have some respect please

  • as far as i am concerned SEGOVIA was an excellent player and i only hope i can contribute to the world of classical/flamenco something. been at it now for over 40 years and took up playing flamenco last august. if all you people want to do is insult each other neither of you have any respect. what is all the "f" words for. perhaps my mother may read this site and be offended. could you use a better choice of words please?

  • i wanna si kirk hammett playing this¡¡

  • I believe that had there been no Andres Segovia, or someone like him, there would not be the guitar movement or popularity we have today. I believe he is directly responsible for any real and keen interest in the guitar. He brought it to the concert stage, and out of the tavern and parlor. Bravo, Herr Segovia, bravo!

  • @tefolase american music is actually pirated million times more, and have influenced millions more[the world over.]. but okay, we'll take your word for it

  • pro old wolf ! . . .

  • interpertacion exepcional

  • i think segovia is a great artist but his timing sounds a little like someone trying to get to grips with a new piece

  • @gobacktorussia mayby you're have to be a little humble & say that y 're not ready for it, & you have to learn listening...

  • @gobacktorussia Remember this was 1976. He had quite bad arthritis in his hands and knees. Parts of this film (The Song Of The Guitar) are rather hard to watch. He keeps grimacing in pain. Plus most of it was filmed in the middle of the night in Grenada. Still hot, even at 3AM, with bats crashing into him every five seconds.

  • mendigo viejillo no la raja eh!!

  • No one plays like Segovia. His last recording, REVERIES, recorded when he was 80-something, is incredibly expressive: something most modern classical players can't replicate. I just play as a hobby, but I'd rather hear someone who can really express the notes rather than a robot-like rendition played a million notes a second. Segovia had technique and expression.

  • AWESOME!!RESPECT TO Andrés Segovia

  • q rico

  • Andres Segovia Is the only true" Maestro" of the guitar, The only person ever to master the Guitar, & very kind man, that helped a lot of young people, such as: John Williams, Julian Bream, & even Charlie Byrd. He was a true perfectionist. I missed that opportunity to be his student!

  • Although this in an "interpretation", you can see the classical guitar in there more than the flamenco guitar. Still, a great piece.

  • i just hope i can even play my guitar when im that old segovia=master of flamenco

  • @maple1659 although this song has some flamenco attributes segovia was actually the master of the classical guitar. he didn't play too many flamenco pieces.

  • He is amazing this song is so hard!!! He´s an edderly man!, he moves hes fingers very well, the time is okay and sound wonderfull!!!

  • you know he's the father of classical guitar right

  • so, wos the grandafather and son and brother pls?

  • your stupid he's was the best guitar player in the world before he died. if you play guitar you should know who is

  • Andres Segavia...........y los demas.

  • Andres Segovia un genio del aguitarra española

  • cedarhawk, the problem that often arises in these discussions is that people who (like you) post thoughtful, tactfully-worded

critique are treated as heretics by the legions of idolaters who see no imperfections in their chosen hero, and who take any such suggestion as fighting words, thereby entitling them to flame, curse, and insult the poster. Childish, silly, ubiquitous on YouTube.

  • Continuing my earlier post: my major musical hero, besides Bach, is Leadbelly. But he was not God. Were I to react to someone's pointing out that his playing in his final concerts in 1949 was often sloppy and clumsy the way that some people react to that kind of critique here, I'd be calling that person's intelligence and ancestry into question for saying such a thing.. Luckily, I outgrew that. Of COURSE Leadbelly made errors, as did Clapton, Page, Hendrix, etc. etc.

    Well...maybe not Bach!

  • Leadbelly was great the only reason he played sloopy at his last concert was because he had lou gehrig's disease of which he died of six monuths later...and I'm sorry that you grew out of guys like page and hendrix and you must not look at them as composer's but one day they will be look at like the clasical giants of Andres and Bach and thou Andres was a great guitar player he was no God he was just human..No there is only one God

  • Eh. There seem to be a lot of arguments going on here about who can make the "best version" of Leyenda Asturias. I'm not somebody who knows a lot of facts about Segovia or Williams. But I do know one thing.

Segovia USED to be able to play very well. In my opinion he was one of the best (if not THE best) of the 20th century. But! When this video was made he was old. I'm not saying that people should say "fuck off, he's old." In fact I'm sick of that.

  • @JamesGod08

First of all, don't insult those with mental problems.

Second of all, I never made such a claim. I can play, and like to think that I am decent. However, I never claim to be able to play better than either the old or the new Segovia. Please observe the fact that I was just stating observations. That he used to be the best, and is now old, but that it doesn't make him worthless.

I'm saying he can't play as well as he used to. Read the next time.

  • @JamesGod08

Cut it. You aren't impressing anyone. Insulting people won't get you anywhere, sheesh. Where do I act excited? And yes, thank you, being a Segovia fan I AM aware of the fact that he is dead. I love his playing. And I like to think that he would be humble enough to not brag about his playing.

  • @JamesGod08

Stop trolling, and just listen to him play.

  • @cedarhawk stfu jewboy and learn to play guitar properly

  • @JamesGod08

I don't think anyone likes your comments.

  • @cedarhawk If you care too much what other people think it will drive you mad.

  • @cedarhawk He's dead, people. He died in the 1980s.

  • ^

    SEE ABOVE

But... People who keep saying that he was still the greatest player when this video was made? I can't agree with that. Instead of saying how bad he is now or fooling yourself that he was still the best when this video was made, I'd rather remember him as he was. Keep the best memories.

I listened to Segovia a lot when he was younger, and he blew me away.

  • SEE ABOVE ^

But listening to this now saddens me, and I kind of wish I hadn't seen this, because I want to remember him the way he was: the best.

To those who say "you do better!" or "you try playing this at his age!" I'm not disagreeing with either argument. I'm still attempting to learn this difficult piece. I also think it's very amazing that he could still play this song at that age. But... *shrugs* See above.

  • listening to Segovia is very relaxing

  • Lets get back to guitar

  • ok he wasnt the nicest person in the word but i think that's because he was on such a high level that the people he gave masterclassen to seem just so ignorend compare to him . it must have anoyed hem that he was not able to talk to somebody of his level of playing and musical interpertation. he is one of the few who (like a good wine) did get better after the years 5 STARS

  • Each time I listen to this I enjoy it like the very first time.

  • The most musical of all guitarists.

  • lindo

  • For those of you that are so critics.

There is a button right above, so you can have video responses of your self. That way people would understand the comments.

  • jealous?

  • You are so idiot HexeEidechse .

To play this good at 80 years old is Divine !

He was one of the 20th century best musicians .

    R.I.P.

  • wtf this guy is a true musician whats with all these negative comments

  • if you want a quick and strong man come I will show you here. call me any time...

  • so jealous?

  • Óleeeee Cómo me gustasssss!!!

    Por Diosssssss!!!!!

  • k makina linares!! :O

  • You are a very dumb and idiotic man?

  • beautiful

  • Excellent!

Recomend also "David Moreno" in youtube

  • A master nobody can match his approach

  • For all you experts out there, Williams learned everything he knows from the Maestro Andres Segovia. By the way, on this video the man was close to 90. Try playing that when you're that age!! Ive been in his house in Linares, he practiced 4 hours everyday right up to the day he died at 92.

  • I understand your point. To further it, he was actually 94 when he died.

  • If I make it to 90, I hope I'm able to scratch my ass, let alone play classical guitar!

  • A true Master , and an example to be followed .

And yes , Williams was his apprentice ; this is for ignorants who don't know this 'little' detail .

  • @rodjoe2001

No he didn't, he learned some of what he knows from Segovia but most of it from his father Leonard who was in turn taught by Mario Maccaferri. I know because my teacher was also taught by him.

Williams' technique and interpretation are totally different from Segovia's and in my view much better. I saw Segovia when he was in his eighties, his tone and projection were superb but the fluidity that modern players have just wasn't there - and probably never was.

  • @gh30

    I stand corrected; he didn't learn everything he knows from Segovia, he only attended 7 of his summer workshops, not enough to even begining to understand the Master's teachings;

Your views are just that, your own views.

To some, whatever you mean by fluidity is perhaps a more important element than say, emotion.

Shit, there's a vid on you tube of a robot playing Coltrane's Giant Steps note by note, seriuosly, not a single error!

    Is that fluidity? you bet!

    emotion? bollocks!!

  • @rodjoe2001 94! how reliable can the rest of your account be...

  • @mrwormburn

An error is just that, an error; I don't really give a hoot what opinion anyone can form in their narrow mind from it regarding my account, same as the childish posting.

At least i didn't google it, but rather relied on information in my memory which hapened to be innacurate. How manly and impressive to let everyone know you can prove someone wrong by........ using google!

Oh, by the way, your writing contains mistakes!! punctuation is part of writing!!

  • @rodjoe2001

didnt he died at the age of 94?

  • Comment removed

  • @cihad2003

Yes sir, my mistake; I should know better, he died in the same day and month (not year) I was born

  • @groove40

    ??

  • @rodjoe2001 ehh i wouldnt blame his age for the slow pase but instead his taste ive seen (sabicas was at his best b4 death) i prefer it played this way as well because when it is played fast it messes up the melody for me the melody is way smoother at this pase and also this is also the pase usually used when it is played on piano and he was the one who originally arranged the piece for guitar so this way is the right way no matter how many people rip on him for not playing as fast as most

  • @joelakastud123 I agree, personally I like better his interpretation by far, but to some, technical perfection should have preference over expression, which, to me, having played for quite a while now, is completely nonsense.

  • @rodjoe2001 technical greatness is very important to me i cant stand when people say that jimmi hendrix is still better than the great guitarist machine yngwie malmsteen and their bs argument is that yngwie doesnt play with as much feel? jimmi hendrix is sloppy and his solos sounded like crap while yngwie is a master soloist and they will make up bs excuses like their different styles and you cant compare them but picking a better guitarist is no different that picking a faster runner

  • @joelakastud123 Are you saying that YM is a shit and sloppy player compared to Michelangelo Batio because he cannot play a fraction of the crap Michelangelo can? Yeah? technical greatness is very important to you, therefore, everything else does not count nearly as much? You should be ashamed of talking about Jimmy in such a way, for he was BEYOND music! ! Now, you get down and give me 40 one hand push ups with the Strat on your back!. Lets see, speed=good, feel=good! no speed or feel= shit

  • @rodjoe2001 wow i really thought i found a sensible man who knows a thing about guitar your a fucking idiot hendrix sucked at playing guitar thats all their is to it yeah he could jam but he was still sloppy on his solos which were basic to begin with as far as pure skill goes he was just another basic overrated blues rock guitarist saying that jimmi hendrix is better than yngwie malmsteen is fuckin stupid you must be 12 or something! have you not payed any attention to my previous comments?

  • @joelakastud123 Sorry, not aware you were looking for a man!! I am not into that game, but keep trying!! Sorry I didn't quite understand where you were coming from, and I totally agree: YM music is not very, should we say, manly? I mean flapping the fingers about the fingerboard repeating the same scales while belching and farting is gay! no offence! I decided I like fast players now, like Vai, he can play 2 guitars simultaneously, not just 1 like YM, that's manly! do you know what IQ means?

  • @rodjoe2001 dude seriously are you fucking five? go fuck yourself you dont know shit about guitar or what a good guitar player is and dont bother replying i wont reply back no more of your stupidity

  • @joelakastud123 It's ok, dude, there is no need to display your repressed anger resulting from your messed up sexuality; there is plenty of help out there, go get some!! oh, and meanwhile, do me a favour, would you? stay the fuck away from anything that has strings on it or makes music, for that matter! obviously you don't know shit from shinola and go around insulting people which makes you even more stupid; Please, you people have to stop all this inbreeding, will you?

  • @joelakastud123 There is no need to insult people just because you have a repressed sexuality, dude; it is ok to come out of the closet man, like Tom Cruise did! In the mean time do me a favour: stay the fuck away from any stringed instrument because obviously you don't now shit from shinnola! go get some help quickly, the consequences of several generations of inbreeding are fast catching up with you. You tool.

  • @rodjoe2001 thats inspiring

  • @rodjoe2001 self correction: he didn't die at 92 , but 94 years old, as the text correctly states.

  • you should take into consideration that the age of this man is significantly higher, so he has lost some of his sharpness in his playing

  • John Williams is not better just younger.

  • it is amazing like preludio in der majior

  • i prefer Segovia to any other guitarist of this genre.

he is, and will continue to be, one of my greatest inspirations.

  • try to play like this with no teacher...;)

  • is he self taught?

  • this is the most beautiful interpretation I've ever heard!

  • Meravigioso.

  • but williams as a classical guitar player interprets this piece perfectly, i mean no mistakes. just think it again: NO mistakes. Its harder than you think. He's playing is like yoga in professional level. His thougts and his hand movements are totally controlled. Ad i think it also has soul in it, only in an other point of view. Also genial i think.

  • now lets see segovia. Andre is spanish(not like williams) and y'kno its a spanish piece. So segovia can play it really realy deep from his soul, and can take this spanish piece with his spanish heart into the highest level of emotions.

  • Dōmo arigatō, Mr. ROBOTO. Give us a call when you find the feeling.. the passion. Not to mention the way to surpass a true Master of the classic guitar like Segovia.

  • Think about this, maybe he dismissed the difficult bits because he wants the feeling and emotion that vibrato brings to the piece. It's moving, and that is his exact intention.

The lack of clearity and bad tone is probably due to this video being at least 20 years old. And it's not "messy" at all. He's actually very clean with his playing... Absolutely FLAWLESS.

  • haha stupid guy

  • i agree, this isnt segovia at his best, i do think he is probably the most influential guitarist of the century. one thing about all this "soul" you people keep mentioning. i could have all the soul in the world and still suck ass. playing all the notes clear and beautifully (and in time for that matter) is a big part in learning a piece. haha

  • Segovia over Williams. Spanish feeling over clean robotic play.

  • this is amazing the first after tariga

  • Mestre Segovia.

  • bdynamyte said on here that Segovia saved the guitar from the common man. I think it's more along the lines of Segovia saved the guitar FOR the common man.

BTW I accidentally marked your comment as spam. I'm an idiot. I'm sorry!

  • Segovia saved the guitar from the common man

  • hey sogovia is playing kind of fast here.

  • There are several different versions of Segovia playing this piece that are better and slower. Still almost every other artist plays this piece too bloody fast. It's still fun to watch sometimes, but only like watching a car chase. I much prefer Segovia's slower interpretations.

  • williams timbre and tone are superior regardless of tempo.

  • Why does every comment have a -1?

  • sorry, i had to do it.

  • There's two e strings in standard tuning, moron. Sp which one are you talking about? Wow, you sure are asking the hard questions; if it's the 6th string then NONE, if the 1st, then two.

Way to go in setting up some sort of "test".

    You can't even be specific.

What a genius you must be.

Now go back to your fantasies about Beyonce.

  • I think this is the only piece that I disagree with Segovia's interpretation. But all his other pieces that I have heard of, no one can match him. Williams is not comparable. No way. God should have let Segovia live forever.

  • someone help me here!!! I respect and greatly appreciate segovia for his talent and the wisdom he passed on to other great guitarists, but why is he considered such a legend? I know he is pretty old here but i've seen footage of him playing in his prime and he is still no where near the level of say John Williams, why do many people see him as a master? Im not bashing Segovia in any way please be considerate with your answer. Thank you

  • maybe williams plays a different style of classical guitar than segovia

and williams is great at his style, and segovia was great at his style

  • SEGOVIA WAS WILLIAM'S TEACHER!

  • The answer to that question is really simple:

1st- Segovia was teacher for Williams and other great masters still alive.

2nd- and most important, Segovia was the one who had the idea of playing guitar in great concert halls, and he translataed many clasical orchestra pieces into guitar, but, in order to play in concert halls he needed a more sonorance and more ´´powerful´´ guitar, so he was the one that pushed the luthiers to create what is known as the actual clasical guitar.

  • And you forgot; In his prime Segovia was second to none...in the Classical field. Sure he's old here but musicguitar probably will never get it; if you look at his videos— he plays complete crap. He wouldn't know great playing (although a bit of faded glory here) if it was right in front of his face.

He says "no where near the Level of Williams...?" Such ignorance. Believe me, Williams would cringe at that statement.

  • The flaw, my friend, is in your thinking. Classical musical enthusiasts have practically invented a language ("interpretation") trying to make music into some kind of science

It's not. It's an emotional thing that happens both when you hear something beautiful and when you play it, and if you don't feel it with Segovia, that's fine. He worked into enough people's hearts to make him a "legend", as far as I'm concerned that's all the mastery you need.

  • I don't think termonology in itself is the problem. I think when people become uncreative in using terminology to craft and critique their art and the art of others--that is where it goes awry. When people apply the standards of others (pedagogues, etc.) rather than really question and develop their OWN synthesis of thought art only suffers. Expression suffers.

I totally agree with you--just wanted to put that out there!

  • @FugginNorb It's more actually like impression. Interpretation is impression because music makes an impression in which you then connect to the guitar as the machine or device that expresses that feeling.

  • @FugginNorb music theory is mathematical and you cannot deny that, the playing (and listening) is where emotion comes into the equation, of course interpretation of a piece cannot be judged on any grounds but personal ones.. but translating music into 'science or maths' seems to be the best way to communicate ideas from on to another in terms of technique

  • he is a master

  • excellente

  • se nota que es de Linares xD

  • genial !!

  • wow

  • Sr. Segovia .. . . Gracias!

  • I like John Williams with this song better.

  • a masterful guitarist.

  • well done old freind

  • I cannot begin to describe my love for his music and my recognition of his capabilities, but when i see a man of his talent play like this it is a little saddening because all of that talent, all of those songs will never flow again.

  • Well said!! from another guitar lover and player

  • Sr. Segobia .. . . Gracias

  • Saw him play in Nottingham in the seventies - before he died. The top guitar-man!

  • Indeed he played with more conviction and fervor when he was younger, but its like anything else. We all lose our vehemence with old age.
