Why Edward Hardwicke didn't play Watson in ''The adventures of Sherlock Holmes'', He played Watson in every movies with Jeremy except ''The adventures of Sherlock Holmes''
Holmes plays the violin - the same bit he's been playing for ages.
Hears Watson's grunt and the scratching as he crosses out "The Brook Street Mystery". Gives a triumphant HA ; he's got through to him. Starts playing the same bit again, but quieter.
Watson crosses out 'Brook Street Residence'. Holmes's hears the crossing out and he stops playing. Then starts playing the same bit again.
Watson writes and doesn't cross out. Holmes continues onto a new bit this time, knowing he's got his way.
Oh gosh, I just love those little, intimate moments in the series. They always have me cackling with delight. Both are wonderful actors and brought Holmes and Watson alive. I also have to comment Jeremy Brett on the violin "playing". I used to play the violin and it always annoys me a bit when I see actors not even making an effort. You can tell he is not really playing it but it does look as real as even possible. Well done, Mr. Brett. :)
Great moments from the episode. I am rereading the Canon but I love the depth we get from the series - the nuances - the interplay between Holmes and Watson.. And yes I agree - both Watsons have their allure. David Burke is cute and cheeky and Edward Hardwick is loyal and with are real affection for JB that comes through. What a wonderful series the likes of which we will not see again. RIP beautiful Jeremy.
Definitely some choice parts of this particular episode. These scenes are also pretty great since, while they're funny, they show just why Holmes is such an exasperating housemate. XD
Jeremy Brett is an absolutely wonderful Holmes. David Burke makes an amazing Watson too(not to say Edward Hardwick didn't too). Heck, Burke isn't too short on charms himself--I find myself drooling over him when I see him in that red smoking jacket in the Copper Beeches episode.
@DecembersSunshine I'm quite sure that he didn't. You may be able to tell that the playing isn't quite in sync with the music and there are other times throughout these episodes where it is a little more noticeable, but Brett does a wonderful job considering!
@darijoe That's right, Brett didn't play the violine himself - I read somewhere that the daughter of Patrick Gowers (the composer) played all the Holmes's violin parts in the series - sorry I can't remember her name - she was around 15 back then and Patrick wanted Holmes's parts to be played by somebody very talented, but not a professional - as Holmes supposedly would have been.
@darijoe You can see that he was well coached, though. He moves in a clear imitation of the way an excellent violinist moves. For instance his bow distribution is very accurate. Vibrato is a bit more advanced so he couldn't fake that, but what he could do he did very well.
"Oh thank you Mrs. Hudson I must run..." Her face when she sees Holmes's mess is soo freaking funny. I would have said... "AH CRAP ! HOLMES HAS DONE IT AGAIN!" 1:17
there at the beginning where he is digging through is office...that looks like my office when i am searching for something! LOL (and I wish I had a watson to find where i misted stuff! lol)
@WishingOne : It's Beethoven's violin concerto in D Major, the 3rd movement. I love this series, and especially this episode. So cute Holmes and Watson
I read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories when I was a kid and must say that these productions are true to the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original tales---But it is'nt just the marvelous performance of the great Jeremy Brett,it's the whole production from David Burke solid acting to the accurately detailed late 19th century english environment.Bravo!
it doesn't matter how old you are to love this, right? Sherlock Holmes makes every girl's heart melting. And so does Jeremy Brett acting Sherlock Holmes. One would be out of her mind to not be touched .
@alguien1234 *super belated* Because he got Watson to get rid of the first title. XD After that, it was only a matter of time before The Resident Patient became the title. The seeds of doubt had been sown. XD
Wow, certainly a leap of logic that March comes after February and January. Good all, Watson.
Damn, they are definitely so married. Hell, they might even be better than married. A married couple would hide stuff like addictions, secrets, and scandals. These two live a life full of the latter two and unapologetic for the first.
I just realized how strikingly similar this Watson is compared to Wilson on "House" (which, I know, is based loosely on Sherlock Holmes). Others may not agree, but I find the comparison to be quite close.
lol! watson tells holmes off for playing the violin so holmes goes and plays it in another room instead! lol the looks watson gave that door! and whats with the random HAH! from holmes?
I think the random "hah!" is because he's trying to learn the beethoven piece better and he thinks he's getting it. Brett's "hah's" were always so funny =D
This is just hysterical! But I have to ask, has anyone else noticed how weird it is that they found an actor who not only looks like Sherlock Holmes (seen the official illustrations) but also walks a classy walk (watch carefully from 1:00 to 1:04) talks a classy talk, and can pay the violin? Jeremy Brett was born to play this part!
Love how the two interact with each other(not in a bad way), the death look sent toward Holmes door when he continued playing was absolutly hilarious. And poor Mrs Hudson!
The song is great but yes, Holmes'with his "what's wrrrrong" and his expression at Watson's title, and the following "No doubt it will suffice..." it's just so coolly funny. So much character in so little dialogue and action. Superb.
I love this vidieo-I must have watched it 10 times and I still crack up every time I see it again. Holmes is such a slob! Actually, he is a piler, meaning he's the kind of person who keeps every scrap of paper he ever got and can usually pull a 2 year old phone bill out of a 18 inch stack of papers. I think that Holmes had just finished his once a year "clean up" and hadn't re-learned the location of everything yet. Sounds like me after I clean my room.
If you're still wondering, it's called the Resident Patient because it's referring to the guy - I forget his name - who hung himself and was part of that previous robbery. He was the patient of the doctor who sought Holmes' help, I believe.
Poor Mrs. Hudson. *giggle* She has to put up with so much. I loved Holmes and Watson's exchange when the latter is trying to write and the former is trying to play his violin. Holmes' quiet reluctant consent is hilarious.
When Watson says "I have to run," I always imagine him running like the dickens as soon as he gets off camera to get away from Mrs. Hudson's fury which is sure to come. :)
I'm positive that Mrs. Hudson skinned Sherlock alive when he got back!
