  • Great - hard to explain but sanchin makes goju special. Not the showiest ever kata but the bedrock of goju.

  • NICE BERY NICE .......

  • Will people please stop commenting on what these guys are doing "wrong" I have trained goju for twenty years, and in all the clubs i have visited everybody does Karate slightly different. As for the comments "it took me 2/3 months to master this Kata" if you ever think you have mastered Sanchin you are just kidding your self.

  • @spideyzx6r THANK YOU!!! It takes at least 3 years to fully master a kata and that is even technically off, since mastering a kata varies with what is categorized and what you think means "mastering." I've been in Goju-Ryu currently 20 years (and counting) and after going to my fair share of tournaments, everybody does it slightly different. Unless people understand "kimae" and "bankai," they will never be close to even perfecting the kata.

  • Their breathing is NOT correct!

  • @printer3210 Breathing doesn't matter how it's placed, as long as it comes from the root of your body. You should be able to feel yourself being rooted to the ground and all air should escape your body. If done extremely well, should feel light headed when done the kata. If you don't feel light headed, then you are doing something wrong, as this kata is only meant to be practiced once every now and then, not consecutively due to headaches. There are different types of breathing

  • should have your hands out a bit more like your holding a baral

  • i would love an exam, where the sensei would hit me that soft, come on man i'm a lower grade and i get hit even harder

  • muy buena kata, es unade las que salen en la pelicula cinturon negro 2008

  • did he just kick his balls twice?

  • so the sound they make, especially the last breath out is like squeezing out every bit of air from inside, right?

  • @brazilianspiritzz I call it the death gargle every last breath :)

  • @brazilianspiritzz yes. pushing it all, every last bit, out.

  • LE FALTAN HUEVOS AL SEN SEI MI HERMANITA PAGA CON MAS HUEVOS

  • yeah uhhh, he aint movin'.....

  • how do you breathe like that, are you contracting the stomach? and is this the 'crocodile sound' that i've read about? i study an 'hard' form of taekwondo, but would love to learn sanchin kata!

  • If you do the sanchin correctly, you can acctually faint.

  • I did this yesterday at karate

My friend stood behind me and slapped my shoulders, sides and thighs. The idea is if you tighten your muscles enough you don't feel the pain

It didnt hurt at the time, but now I'm sore

  • I used to do goju ryu traditional karate and acheived my 2nd dan. The training can be unnecessarily hard, often taught by ex army types or over confident instructors with massive Egos. The belt grading systen is unfair and had NO international standard to measure against. Indeed you can go to several "Goju Ryu" clubs and they will all be different, varying the expectancies for each grade !

I now am learning TaiChi Chuan. NO Grades - just time ! Best way ever !

  • @294682 There are international organizations with standardized gradings and teacher permits. The IOGKF is one of the biggest and is lead by Morio Higaonna, 10Dan in Goju Ryu and a very respectable and good martial artist.

I guess you just had bad luck with you school. Anyways, good for you, that you found something that suited yourself better. Good luck training.

  • awesome! i study goju ryu karate but only at 7 kyu (yellow belt) so will be a while b4 i start this kata. seen my Sensei do it a couple of times and it looks awesome, cant wait till i start it.

  • the breathing is over the top. no one does that in japan. not even goju style.

  • @HeeeeellNo really ?

  • @HeeeeellNo Sorry the breathing is important, Mabe not quite that severe, I trained for over 16 years in gojuryu Karate and i know first hand how to perform this essential Kata

  • i can summarize all this into the following:

low shoulders, use armpits/ lats instead.

tense up everything, even the glutes.

abdominal breathing, inhale with nose, compress.

abs tight. not sucked in, not inflated, but short and straight.

now i'm gonna try this on push ups.

  • @Emanouche ! LOL

  • It is a great video but I almost cannot hear the sensei over the breathing of the students. I guess that says something good about the practice of the students though :)

  • Man, karate looks too hard. I mean, i am into Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu right now, which incoorperates yoshinkai aikido and gojo ryu, but gojo ryu just looks so damn difficult. I mean, i know it will help my jiujitsu, and i know i need a striking art to be well rounded (not only the jointlocks of jiujitsu). But it just looks so damn hard, The kata's look like excruciating pain haha. If anyone can convince me to take gojo ryu, please do, cuz i just don't see the motivation for going through so much pain

  • @dirosaga i have been doing Gojo Ryu for 6 years, if your in relatively good physical shape it is not painful. like any form of martial arts it is physically demanding. and when you watch this video and see the young man getting hit it does not cause him pain BECAUSE he has his muscles properly trained and tightened.

  • this kata reminds me of superenpei, but thats shizentai(natural) stance

  • This Kata seems to create raw core strenghth through muscular exhaling. Very good kata.

  • At what level does a Goju practitioner learn the "Sanchin" kata... is this a black belt Kata? thanks for the info.

  • @2ChillPillz the kata is taught at the begining of goju ryu and carries on throughout your study, gaining more and more from it as time goes by. thanks for watching

  • *inhale* *exhale* *cough* *cough*

  • Luke, I am Your Father !

  • @3:32 its like, "fuck you, let me do de fking kata alone"

  • i speak from a place of very limited knowledge concerning this kata, but even so i believe it to be a source of great and profound understanding of biomechanics and structure, not to mention some hardcore energy flow. in fact, be careful, you may find yourself getting a bit crazy! but combined with training on a real, traditional makiwara, whatever your style may be, it is invaluable when it comes to generating power. and i don't even practice karate, thats how great this form is in my opinion.

  • sanchin beautifull to every karate styles(very hard to master).through this kata u can see the base of karate in all styles.Practising uechi ryu and its very nice too see goju style too

  • whahaahahahaahah its freakin funny aahhahahaah

  • when you exhale with those unique sounds, do you suck your belly in as it'd be visibly sucked in? or somewhat hardened as a finger wouldn"t even dig in?

  • @brazilianspiritzz Hi there the stomach would be hardened throughout.

  • shit

  • I actually take this exact style of karate and this is one of my favorite katas ever!!

  • @sterfri99 agreed

  • this is soo fucked @.@

  • @JDM867 depends on the student i think. goju-ryu focuses on both soft and hard techniques while shotokan is more focused just on the hard part. theyre both great styles though :)

  • No......at 4"24, that wasn't ball conditioning, that was a stance to prevent hitting his groin,, and the instructor was just testing it :)

    He was not molesting/.....

  • No, at 4:24 wasn't ball conditioning......it was testing the stance, the feet should not go higher than the thighs/knees in this stance...I should know :)

  • man molested by two guys. that's worse than one :D

  • I do strongman on a state level in KY and I want to incorperate this type of work into my training. I believe what the sanchin kata is doing, is teaching the body to create intra-abdominal pressure in a functional way. Powerlifters rely on IAP to preform the bench press, squat, and deadlift. I think using these techniqes can help me in strongman too, as well as my seel bending.

  • Thanks!

  • What the... did he kick that guy in the balls!..

  • @speedracer21210

what it is, is, in the kata Sanchin, the proper stance, means your legs are to be slightly bent, so that a kick cannot get the groin, this kata is to be done very tense, thats why we check the shoulders, lats, thighs, and other muscles, the groin kick is to make sure the legs are in the right spot, if theyre not, well, the student fails the kata. hope that clears it up :)

  • que lomo le saco el karate e ese tio XD

  • 4:24, is that ball conditioning?!

You guys are hardcore, respect Sensei.

I practice Chinese martial qigong, which I know is a little different. We try to keep the breathe smooth, soft and fluid. I'd be interested to know why you adopt this breathing pattern. Are you applying locks at the top of the in-breath or as you exhale?

    Interesting stuff, thanks for posting.

  • @jamiethered i can tell you that the hard breathing in this kata makes your lungs and chest muscles bigger and it makes a lot of oxygen go through the muscles of your body making them harder

  • Man, I remember the first time watching someone perform Sanchin and getting their ass BEAT while they do this slow Kata, and I remember being scared crapless at the prospect of having to endure that. Of course, it's that initial fear that makes it such an accomplishment to do it so many years later. Great technique, even better instruction here.

  • @JDM867 Seriously, must the comments of every martial arts video devolve into an intra-style pissing contest? It's not the style, it's never the style. It's who trains harder, who puts more passion in their learning, and, sometimes, just who was lucky on any given time.

  • With all th epeople on here saying this is very poor, where is your video showing the "proper way"?

  • @MrHcma You R one to TALK MR

  • very poor, sorry

  • dey sound like their suffocating........

  • I had to Practice continuously for 2 Months to Master this kata even after my black belt examinations...!!i donno y but it never suited me...my mind wasnt responding to the kata as if i do no like that...but then later :P i forced myself XD...but it needs alot of concentration and patience!!good work frnd btw....

  • This is so silly.

Karate is never about getting beat up on 5000 times, so you can avoid being beaten up once.

  • what happens when u get hit when breathing in? he says he only hits when all air is expelled... but u have to breath in at some point.

  • what happens when u get hit when breathing in? he says he only hits when all air is expelled... but u have to breath in at some point.

  • i do sho hei ryu had know idea there was so much around

  • It takes a very long time to master this is true but if you don't have proper instruction it looks way off .I am sorry but there hand placement is off and def too straight and after that they are missing a few steps

  • @RuLoOkInAtMyNuTs Learn us all, Great Swami!!

  • The kata was done to a count as part of a demonstration and explanaition, how did you learn the kata?

  • I have never seen this kata done to a count. That is not traditional in Goju ryu karate. I am a 2nd kyu, and I have never preformed this kata to a count. always "as you may" never any way else. what is the assosiation that this dojo belongs to?

  • Comment removed

  • @heliopijpe I know that, i am part of the association that descended from Chojun Myagi's original style. Traditionally, this is done to the "as you may" call. Students who have trained with The masters of Goju Ryu, have never corrected this.

    Are you in Goju Ryu?

  • @heliopijpe Thats cool. what is your association? Sucks about the biking accident, though.

  • @Spock103 Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai - Belgian Karate Federation (Masters: Hanshi Uchiage Kenzo - Sihan Uchiage Takeshi - Shihan Leo Van Bortel )

  • @Spock103 Thanks for all your comments they are all appreciated but i get the feeling that a lot of well experienced karateka out there with all their advanced knowledge beleive that the term HAJIME in japanese which means start or begin to be understood as AS YOU MAY. COULD THIS BE THE CASE ?

  • @gojukanman Yes, that is what I have been taught.

  • shaolin do the same.....with hard staffs ....lol

  • I practiced Goju Ryu Karate as a youth and obtained my green belt. I really enjoyed it but the dojo I went to had a sensei that let the business get in the way of the teachings and it fell to pieces with the majority of students leaving and the dojo eventually closing. Shame because I would really like to get back into things but don't know of a dojo in my area that teaches the Goju Ryu style. I wish I could find a sense like the one here in this video.

  • @soul76can Where are you based because maybe somebody on youtube can suggest someone teaching near you. Otherwise,of course ......you will just have to come to England!

  • Comment removed

  • @SeaSharkGull Haha, might as well just go to Japan. ;) (I know this post is old, but could not resist.)

  • @soul76can If you're in the central California area you may want to look into Sensei Tibon. He was my teacher and he went from teaching out of his garage to becoming one of the more influential instructors in NA. But Goju may not be available where you are. In my opinion, that's fine, any martial art, when taught well, is a truly enriching experience. Avoid the schools that teach all the flashy moves, look for the schools where the fire, and passion, and discipline is embedded in each student.

  • @soul76can I am 15 and this is my sixth year at the dojo I'm learning at. If you live in PA, you should come to Jim Thorpe and join. I am sure you would be welcome here.

  • @soul76can I took Goju Ryu Budokai in my youth and was ready to test for green belt, but then we got new students and I had to help train them instead of testing out, and lost my motivation to progress. Goju Ryu might take significantly longer to progress in, but I love the katas. I wish i knew of a place around here that taught it as well. I'm glad to see that it is still practiced.

  • @soul76can if u live in new york city iam in a goju ryu school.

  • @soul76can Grandmaster Peter Urban founder of USA Goju's students Hanchi Archie Rullan Has a Dojo in NYC ( Msg me for more info.) Also I learn my karate from Kyoshi John Garcia 6th Dan In Sarasota,Fl Those are the only ones I know because I live in the East coast, but theres alot of people doing shotokan with sensies who have yet to learn some basic katas, techiniques & weapon froms. Goju + Hard and Soft Thats what this kata represents the hard breathing and smooth flowing techniques.

  • @soul76can have a similar problem. i moved, andwhere i live now, they only teach shotokan. I had to start muay thai and later aikido instead. Which are both fine, but my old dojo really was something, because they totally ignored any business aspects.

  • @trumblewumblehumble Lol, same thing over here, they all teach shotokan... Haven't done Goju Ryu in years, Goju Ryu seemed to be the primary karate style where I lived in Switzerland, so it was weird that the martial art university here (somewhere in Ohio) only had shotokan... I picked up a bit of Iaido instead, that was fun for a while, but I've been out from doing martial arts for the past 5 years now... kinda sad. :( Needs to get back in shape too.

  • @Emanouche Shotokan was developed by Gishin funakoshi in 1922 when he introduced Karate to Japan.

The origin of gojuryu goes way back, many thousands of years. Karate was developed in Okinawa.

  • i can do this :P i got to karate hehehe

  • dont roll your rists, n your chamber is lacking the two way action on your follow through. i just got back from okinawa from meagi's dojo. my skin sandpaper, hehe

  • there are three versions of this Kata. this one is model kata.

  • anyone know a GOOD Goju Ryu school in the Minneapolis MN area?

  • The sanchin stance on both of them is off. Guy on the left has to not have his toes pointed in so much and guy on the right needs to point them in a bit more. The outside lines of your feet should both be parallel and pointing straight. But the breathing sounds like they are doing it properly which is good.

  • thank you for your coments a broken ankle and damaged leg prevents the correct stance in this kata but thanks for pointing it out.

  • @karatekydsyd

Foot angle depends on the branch of Goju. Outside edges parallel is too straight in some branches of goju. Meibukan (Yaqgi), Shobukan (Shinjo), Shoreikan (Toguchi), Shodokan (Higa) are 3 I can think of off the top of my head

  • not bad ! but arms need to run against the body ! foot needs to stick to the floor on moving and heel down even more on the way back ! and hands are to close together on the last to moves ! oh and green belts should not perform testing as they can't perform sanchin properly themselves !

  • You sound like a noob.

  • whats a noob ? or are you alliterate and can't spell knob !?

  • You are a noob for not knowing what noob means.

  • then you are a antediluvian invertebrate ! ow about that one then ! I still stand by my comments ! shanchin isn't bad but it could be much better !

  • they missed a few steps

  • no they didnt miss a few steps out there are two main versions of this kata in goju ryu karate.

  • Sanchin takes a lot of practice. It's not a hard form to learn but very hard to master. So they had to reposition their feet? So their arms are a little to straight? They probably haven't been doing it very long so cut them some slack. Go-Ju Ryu is a great style and I have been learning for 21 years from my grandfather who studied under Iichi Miyazato for 22 years in Naha. I say the more people we have learning, then better off our style and way of life is. Good job guys.

  • wow that's actually amazing! I just started Sanchin and it is very difficult to learn and get into it.

  • That's true!

  • In Shao-lin Kung Fu this is called

     San e or iron shirt

  • my unle is paul coleman 4 time world champion and the student u used to demontsrate and terrible footwork all the way through his form looked weak. i think this is a terrible example

  • Thank you for your comments. The person in this video has had broken legs and ankles in the past ,and is 60 years old, but this is his sanchin kata karate is all about training and trying to improve yourself. we will keep trying

  • I don't think this is bad at all. The people are training with sincerity and commitment: what more do you (darylgrant) want? Keep training, gentlemen, and don't listen to negative thinkers!

  • Thank you for your comments

  • not negative think but dont use someone who i not do the kata correctly or competently as a show model to explain how the kata is executed correctly esp this kata which is all about form

  • i do too 1 when they punch their arms are a little too straight and 2 when they take a step into the sanchin stance they land crooked then fix them selves

  • And you're much better?

  • Re reading my coment,I didn't mean to come off offensive. If I was not lucky to have a very good Hakka system Sifu,"Goju Ryu" would be very appealing to me,to be specific, your roots are more "Hakka",systems such as Bak Mei,Hakka Crane,Southern Mantis,Lung Ying Dragon, ect.Hakka systems stand out from other forms of "Chinese boxing".

5:58- 6:06,good explination of short power,do you have a kata that addresses

"Fau, chum, taan, toi ",circular and fluid motions and coiling energy?Yam Yeung Ging?

  • Hi i think that tensho kata would fit the bill with its circular movements and bresth control. Check it out on our other video called tensho, sesan and lineage. thanks for your comments, max

  • this was exelent,I dont practice in an school any more but ,I keep doing Sanchin ...and by the way its an exelent exercise gracias

  • This comes from "Hakka Crane"

No expression of "Fau, chum, taan, toi "(float, sink, swallow and spit)they must have lost it on the boat back from China.Thia is one of the better karate "forms"

  • Thank you for your comments. we do relate to those principles from chinese boxing and sanchin is such a vast suject that we did not have time to include all aspects at once

  • excellent way to make sure the breathing technique is done correctly oosh

  • i had to do this for my brown belt, it hurts like ****.

just out of intrest what disipline/school is this? i train in bujitsu kan goju ryu. It is very different cos this didn't look correct under our school of karate, still impresive kata none the less.

  • same here for my GREEN they do this but light at green hard at purple exra hard at brown also varies depending on your skill lvl =D congratz on brown belt

  • This demo of sanchin was top class, it showed co-ordination,control, correct tension & movement. The dedication to get to this level is evident.

The groin kicks show the groin is lifted correctly .The three battles is continuous.

  • Thats all hoooh huuuh are the special breathing. By doing this you concentrate energy. Your strikes will be next time stronger than ever. I'm training kyokushin and when we are doing sanchin kata our sensei doesn't kick our balls. Sometimes he use his shinai but that's all. If I make mistake in language pleas correct me ^^ becouse I'm not from England.

  • GOOD

  • i only know getsadai gi getsadai ni

and saifa this is the fourth kata and it has been a heap of help thanx!

  • why must we breath so hard?

  • Recommended books about Sanchin kata are Way of Sanchin Kata by Kris Wilder and Okinawan Karate by Mark Bishop. Good video demonstration thanks for sharing.

  • For some reason this Sanchin Kata is VERY different from the one that I do.....after the 3rd punch, we turn to face the back, do a chudan (all very slowly) and execute 2 punches, turn to face the front and execute 4 punches, 3 knife hands and 2 miwashi ukis. And yes, I know I have terrible Japanese spelling! lol

  • do u do isshin ryu?

  • Nope, I do goju.....but I'm in Canada....perhaps different countries have different versions of Sanchin

  • ok then. Cause u said u do it different and I assumed you did isshinryu. Which branched off from Shorin ryu and goju ryu

  • That is Sanchin dai Ni. This video is Sanchin dai Ichi but is usually refered to as just Sanchin

  • There are two versions of Sanchin usually practised in Goju. This one is the version devised by Miyagi Chojun; the other one, that you're referring to, is that of Higa[shi]onna Kanryo. There are a couple of stories about why Miyagi Osensei shortened it. Personally I prefer the loger version, but there's no reason why you shouldn't practise both if you want to..

  • The loud breathing is only so the Instructor can determine if the student is breathing correctly.

Otherwise, it is not done so loud.

Sanchin is the foundation of many arts.

  • i am 14 and i'm at the rank of shodan ho i have picked a thing or two that needs to be corrected the man on the right. im not sure if it is just the angle of the camera but his back foot isnt straight. person on the right your elbow is leaving you body as you punch it should run off the body you get so much more power. and when you punch the hand travels in a straight line to the target. your hands are making an arc shape as it travels.

  • I fully appreciate the value of sanchin. but the loud unnatural breathing always makes me laugh. sanchin is a good and extremely important kata

  • that breathing is to cultivate your energy and strengthen your lungs

  • dont you know its not a breathing problem.. haha oh GM Y.

  • essentiel kata

  • Ty for this, very usefull to my training.
