Both but technique plays a more important role. With a sound slapping technique can get a good tone with no EQ-ing. But if your technique is bad then even a 100 band EQ can't help you.

The "X" means, you mute string...

P and others are just short name of "Pup up" - you hit strings by index finger...

T- you hit by thumb...

T means "Thumb" or "Tap". Where you hit down with your thumb.

P means 'pluck', 'pop' or 'pick' where you use either your index or middle finger to 'pop'.

X is a muted 'pop' or 'slap', like a muted note in normal tab.

Wait till you get into double thumb techniques where you have up thumbs, down thumbs and pick with fingures 1 and 2...........................

hey bro, its not to hard to do, first of all make sure you've got your slapping style down right, i'm sure you do if your even attempthing this... then listen to the song, and play the slap part (use tab if you will, if you use ear your a baller :]), and just play it slow, and make sure your getting EVERY note in there with your thumb and stuff. get the thumb speed first before worrying abut the fills too.

Top as in higher in pitch or top as in physically above? Cause the top in pitch is because hes popping the string (plucking outwards in a hard manner), but if you mean the lower strings then its probably some effect.
