Watch the tapes of Gigili, Bjoerling, Bergonzi- then watch the master's class of LP trying to teach young tenor how NOT to open the mouth in this same aria. PB is not a bad tenor, the technique is just flawed. He is "singing to the gallery". Oh well, that is how one must sing to today's opera audience. I like some of his stuff on YT.
Beczala has a voice of great beauty and power. He is also a good actor.I think he is a thoughrouly excellent opera tenor, perhaps the best at this moment !!!
eh, he is definately singing too open and is not really covering well at all.i predict he will continue to decline unfotunately unless he gets some good teaching quick.
good point. young tenors sound watch the mouth action of this young man then watch Pavarotti/Bjoerling approach high notes. The jaw does NOT drop further as they move up. LP speaks of it on YT in a Masters class w/same aria. When you have lots of voice you can get away w/it, but as you can hear the sound is not beautiful/bright/ringing & the career will not be long, unless corrected.
I don't see the point in comparing him with anyone. But I am impressed. He should be getting much more attention then the likes of Villazon, Alvarez, etc etc...he's very good, not excellent by very good. Solid technique...he's making the best out of what the almighty has given him.
Sounds not as light as pav in the 70's and sounds larger then early pav when his voice was smaller then later in house. His voice is darker in color then early pav. but sounds something on top like Gedda and at times like Wunderlich on recording but not here.
Superb. He sings like Jussi Bjorling and Fritz Wunderlich, except with more weight in the sound, like Pavarotti in the early 70's. Also, the focus is superb. The voice, however, does lack agility, but he'll improve with age.
In my opinion, Piotr Beczala did a very good Duke. Unfortunately I couldn't see him on the Metropolitan of NY, but I recorded the entire opera by the Syrius Radio, and we can feel the emotion of the audience after the most know arias. I adore Beczala, that is it!
Doesn't sound anything Carreras in "mid to late career", by then Carreras had a distinct wobble and sang with a very open almost shouted top. I saw Beczala in this role at the Royal Opera in Covent Garden, and he was astounding.
super !!!

Um tenor Lirico de caracteristicas extremamente spinto de voz.
A tendencia natural é que ele assuma o repertorio lirico-spinto dentro de pouco tempo!

I was a fan of everything but his cadenza, to much muscle behind it to be comfortable.
iskivolkl11 2 years ago
agreed, though his steady mid range makes me think he muscled because of nervous energy rather than technique issues. All in all a solid performance.

@Lovelytenor1 Corelli opens a huge mouth in the acuti. Pavarotti's not completely right. What works for him doesn't neccesarily work for others.
thehix 11 months ago
@Lovelytenor1 100percent correct and big voices get away with this all the time.

s' oggi questa mi torna gradita
forse un' altra doman lo sarà.

É uma bela ária!
Questa o quella per me pari sono
A quant'altre d'intorno,
D'intorno mi vedo;
Del mio core, l'impero non cedo
Meglio ad una che ad altra beltà.
