Actually, most shows are hand fired with road flares. Electronic firing is uncommon because the time involved for setup makes it very expencive.

Very large shows and those requiring precise timing are often electronic but extra time is alloted for the setup.

It takes days to setup the large shows in major cities for the 4th of July. The show in Boston takes at least 3 days to setup, for example.

The show in this video was a small 4th of July show in 2007.
