i do see a lot of improvements when i visited in February but at the same time, most of these people are children of the communist officers and generals...my family fought off the communist but some of them still live in VN so theres nothing much they can do but to accept the communist party... Vietnam is much better of than Philippines, which was a lot richer than Vietnam 20 years ago but now a lot poorer. So there's certainly improvement. But you can't change a very poor and destroyed country (which Vietnam was in the 70's) into a rich nation in 30 years.

When the North invaded and defeated the South, the North slow rebuilt the whole nation after the USA napalmed the country. What drove Hanoi was the invasion of Cambodia. Since Nam was spending money on the war in Cambodia, in 1986, Hanoi decided to invest in the economy and today Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia as the Philippines is.
@CosmoShidan The American should not have gotten involved at all in the war, for MacArthur warned the US government not to build up in Vietnam at all and only focus on problems in their own country. This lead to America's crushing defeat since the US army suffered 362,700 casualties out of 543,000 deployed troops, causing a drop in troop morel and motivation. Not to mention $200 billion dollars spent. They should have listened to MacArthur in the beginning and look were this has led them.

@TheSkybender Multiparty systems would complicate matters and lead to power struggles. It's better to leave the system the way it is. Plus the culture of Nam is kept together by Confucian laws, which is what many Far Eastern systems use as their principles. The only problem is that Confucianism is patriarchal. Hanoi has tried to change that by encouraging feminism, but has been slow to do so. Also it's a good thing that there is no Yakuza in Nam, otherwise there is corruption in society.

There are corporations in Vietnam now, though run by state department of finance, 4 million people visit Vietnam every year, and merchants sell many items to tourists, lastly there are ancient ruins and artifacts preserved by Hanoi. You'd think they'd gain education and change their lifestyle for the better, but no, they still litter where-ever they live and work. Let's take a look at Phuoc Loc Tho, it's dirty and unsafe than other ethnic commercial area. This is deeply rooted in their culture. A culture of a third world, that is.

You are naive to think that democracy is what ensures Vietnam prosperity and gives those children better future. Nothing can be done in a blink of an eye neither the level of living standard. Nothing can be done without money and Vietnam is starting to rise economically. Unfortunately i dont think those children's life will change dramatically but the next generations will probably have a much brighter future.

@middletech USA lost because of their chess-based strategy; meanwhile, North Vietnam employed a Go-based strategy. In one hand, 50% of the nation is rich, on the other hand 50% is poor, and it's better than 20 years ago when 20% of the population was rich and 80% poor; so it's getting better in the 'Nam. Vietnam is on the road to a slow but steady recovery just like the Philippines and in 40 years, the 'Nam will be the 17th richest nation in the world.

At least they are not North Korea who has it's people working without pay, no freedoms, and is murdering the disabled, according to Guy Delisie's "Pyongyang". Nam basically did what Gorbachev would have done for his country by opening the nation up to foreign trade. The reason for the upheavals is because some of the American tourists are telling those people to rebel unnecessarily.

The nation should stay as it is now, since there is peace, foreign trade, and is a member of ASEAN. @CosmoShidan For instance, the politicians, businessmen, gangsters and the club owners; while the village people had were poor, yet they lived off the land since they were farmers, so the peasants were never truly poor as long as they had sustenance. Also to note, Ho Chi Mihn was the one who proposed an election to unite Vietnam, but Diem wanted nothing to do with that since the Americans were backing Diem's regime at the time. Overall, the South was a corrupt nation.

When the North invaded and defeated the South, the North slow rebuilt the whole nation after the USA napalmed the country. What drove Hanoi was the invasion of Cambodia. Since Nam was spending money on the war in Cambodia, in 1986, Hanoi decided to invest in the economy and today Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia as the Philippines is.

@CosmoShidan The American should not have gotten involved at all in the war, for MacArthur warned the US government not to build up in Vietnam at all and only focus on problems in their own country. This lead to America's crushing defeat since the US army suffered 362,700 casualties out of 543,000 deployed troops, causing a drop in troop morel and motivation. Not to mention $200 billion dollars spent. They should have listened to MacArthur in the beginning and look were this has led them.

@TheSkybender Multiparty systems would complicate matters and lead to power struggles. It's better to leave the system the way it is. Plus the culture of Nam is kept together by Confucian laws, which is what many Far Eastern systems use as their principles. The only problem is that Confucianism is patriarchal. Hanoi has tried to change that by encouraging feminism, but has been slow to do so. Also it's a good thing that there is no Yakuza in Nam, otherwise there is corruption in society.

@TheSkybender The principals of Confucius are working, 85% of Vietnam's population is Buddhist, and if I remember correctly, the people of Vietnam, in 1975, according to BBC, didn't know whether to feel sorrow or rejoice that the war came to an end. I have to address this, did Hanoi kill 2 million people at random like the Khmer Rouge? No. After the war, they went to fight Pol Pot and defeat the Khmer Rouge and China as rebuild as a result and later open up to world trade.

There are corporations in Vietnam now, though run by state department of finance, 4 million people visit Vietnam every year, and merchants sell many items to tourists, lastly there are ancient ruins and artifacts preserved by Hanoi. So there is no need to change the regime, just accept the change of the economy's pace.

Because of his usage of authoritarian power, the Philippines manage to survive a nation-wide crime wave, two rebellions north and south, and the brink of anarchic collapse. He manage to avert such disaster, from 1950-1957, single-handedely, and since then there has been no other world leader to match him except Lazaro Cardenas of Mexico.

Trying to bring democracy is wrong because true democracy is the dictatorship of the majority where the majority always wins. It is better to establish a republic such as the Philippines, where the masses and government have dialog between one another instead of the people ordering the political body around like an angry mob. The Philippines may be poor, but the people never really starve as long as they have an abundance of love from parents who struggle hard to give to their kids.

@TheSkybender The reason why the Vietcong won was because of their usage of Sun Tzu's The Art of War in which they employed tactics of deception, espionage, attack on supply lines, mastery of the terrain, and assault from the shadows. The US army, on the other hand, had no such advantage over the Cong since Americans troops fought man-to-man. Hence, there is no way you can go back to Nam and fight them all over again, Hanoi has won, accept it, winner take all. BTW, Nam's an oligarchy!

Republic translates to Res Publica; Res=thing, affair, law, Publica=people, law of the people or to rule by law, in such a system, the power of government is limited by law, and the people's rights are protected by law.

@CosmoShidan lol so Vietnam today is not ruling by a Mob?? Nothing is perfect, but at least Democracy is better than Communism, Socialist and Dictatorship. More than 35 years, the VC did nothing by bringing more suffering and humiliations to VN and it is more the time for a change!! Doesnt matter if VN changes to Democracy or Republic, as long as it is not under the Communism, Socialist and Dictatorship then it will be all good for VN & the world!

@TheSkybender I'll have know that there is no mention of the word democracy in the US Constitution. Hell, Ben Franklin said he gave America a republic, "if you can keep it." In a republic, the rule of law protects the rights of the people by limiting the government by law, and defending the individuals rights by fair trial. Democracy doesn't do that, it's all dictated by the mob, 51:49, individual loses, the majority wins. BTW, not all dictatorships are bad.

@vutuanming lol u can not have total Freedom & rights, becuz if u do so, then the country will turn into Chaos. There r some that u can have and some u can't, but at least in the Democratic nations like the USA, Canada, ect.. people have full basic rights such as Freedom of Speech, Assemble. Petition, Press and Regions, ect.. Can u have those right in Vietnam, China or North Korea?? How can that be the Same?? No Government = Chaos!! If it is the same, then y u live in the USA?? @vutuanming lol Yes, these happen everywhere, but there are more sufferings and poverty in the Communist and dictatorship nations like VN, ok!!U still sleeping or u just dumb becuz u cant see the big different between the Communist nations vs. the Democratic nations. Compare Cuba, North Korea, VN and China to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the USA. If u love VN then u should fight for Democracy, Human Rights and real Freedom for VN!!

Communism isn't an ideal dorm of govt in our society, but look at China. They're communist, but have lifted many out if poverty just like Vietnam. I don't support communism, but I do support that we, Viet kieu, have to move on and accept the fact that Vietnam won't become a democracy. Apparently, Vietnam is developing fast without it.

Because communism right now in Vietnam isn't a pure state. Go look up what Communism really is. To be honest, practically all forms of government are good, BUT only if they are controlled right. Communism was meant to abolish social classes and create an oppression-free society.
And yeah, the whole point for Communism was to split everything up equally, again go look it up.
And the reason why I would defend him a little bit is because at least he tried to do something.
