I saw the PBS documentary on Detroit's electric cars back in the 90s', and it included some footage of the Volt. NOT GOOD. The Volt couldn't make it up an incline of 15 degrees at more than 6 mile per hour. It actually stalled and started sliding back down hill, and the GM PR people started running after it and managed to stop it before it crashed into the railing... Pathetic. I think I will take the Chinese car over the Volt, which is yet to be made by a bankrupt company.

I don't understand one thing, the electric car is " supposed " to replace the IC engine powered one - but what will happen to the trillion of dollars invested in the infrastructure built to service, mfg in building these engines - the petrol pumps the refineries the drilling rigs etc they will just go down the drain ? - as for eco friendliness, major portion of the electrical needs are still fulfilled by burning coal, oil and disintegration toxic nuclear fuel.

Currently, no it's not. Why? cause it hasn't stand the test of time. A company needs to build on their reliability record and so far no Chinese auto maker has done that. These companies have only been around little over a decade, far too young. Still, I wouldn't bet against BYD and many others.
At one point in time Ford, GM and Chrysler were new companies too. Think the other American auto manufacturer's that did not stand your test of time. Innovation is key. If BYD can make a good plug-in hybrid for $20,000US and get it to market before the big three can... They can definitely grab a foot hold in America, and over time try to push their way to the top.
I think it's easy to make a reliable electric car because it has very few parts compared to gas-only cars. This car does not have a transmission, since the electric motor directly drives the wheels, so the technical complexity is actually quite low. So reliability wise, it might be pretty good.

But in the end it combines price with green technology so as to be a realistic product for the mainstream American or Australian. I saw the PBS documentary on Detroit's electric cars back in the 90s', and it included some footage of the Volt. NOT GOOD. The Volt couldn't make it up an incline of 15 degrees at more than 6 mile per hour. It actually stalled and started sliding back down hill, and the GM PR people started running after it and managed to stop it before it crashed into the railing... Pathetic. I think I will take the Chinese car over the Volt, which is yet to be made by a bankrupt company.

I don't understand one thing, the electric car is " supposed " to replace the IC engine powered one - but what will happen to the trillion of dollars invested in the infrastructure built to service, mfg in building these engines - the petrol pumps the refineries the drilling rigs etc they will just go down the drain ? - as for eco friendliness, major portion of the electrical needs are still fulfilled by burning coal, oil and disintegration toxic nuclear fuel.

but as more and more renewable energy sources come online those coal fire plants and nuclear power plants are going to be used less and less. Until they are phased out of the grib completely...

Currently, no it's not. Why? cause it hasn't stand the test of time. A company needs to build on their reliability record and so far no Chinese auto maker has done that. These companies have only been around little over a decade, far too young. Still, I wouldn't bet against BYD and many others.

At one point in time Ford, GM and Chrysler were new companies too. Think the other American auto manufacturer's that did not stand your test of time. Innovation is key. If BYD can make a good plug-in hybrid for $20,000US and get it to market before the big three can... They can definitely grab a foot hold in America, and over time try to push their way to the top.

I think it's easy to make a reliable electric car because it has very few parts compared to gas-only cars. This car does not have a transmission, since the electric motor directly drives the wheels, so the technical complexity is actually quite low. So reliability wise, it might be pretty good.

This car is designed for America. The rest of the world wants fuel efficient compacts. Ford has had cars that get 40-50+ MPG for sale in Europe.
