  • There is an interview on youtube Patti addresses this incident. Typically, Patti would see the LED lights of the offenders and then tell the stage manager when she went offstage where they were seated so they could be removed quietly by an usher. In this case, the rude idiot was seated close to the stage and Patti could hear the whirring of the camcorder, as could the people seated next to him. This is the one and only time she stopped a show and she had every right to do so.

  • Completely unprofessional ----- the show goes on --- no matter what! SHE ruined the show for the entire audience. Yes -- the photographer was completely out of line and should have been removed by ushers but her outburst was totally wrong wrong wrong.

  • @phlashba Please, those people saw the performance of a lifetime and will be telling their kids about that madness, I saw the closing performance but secretly wished I had been there the night before.

  • @an7iguy You are lucky; I saw it a few weeks before and she was totally phoning it in.

  • Patti Lupone did the right thing . Nobody can concentrate when people take flash photography . It hurts your eyes, distracts you, amd you get dizzy . She was being treated disrespectfully . That photographer should have fucked of .

  • @555kappock what if there are street performers :) ??

  • They WERE BOTH being assholes - for taking pictures and for ruining the fucking show. let's all move on from this. let's enjoy the humor of this video and move on with our fucking lives.

  • They seem to have forgotten to mention how Cool this video is. ;-)

  • If you want to take pictures, text, talk on your cell phone, or keep your cell-phone "on," then DON'T ATTEND A BROADWAY THEATRE...or any other entertainment where there are live performers!!! Go outside, in the street, and play!

  • Honestly, if I were a paying member of this audience, I would have demanded my money back. Ms. Lupone, my question to you is: who do YOU think YOU are? To me, you're just another diva. Go away, please.

  • @jamie0916 well then if you feel that way why are you watching videos of her and feeling the need to comment? Shouldn't we be telling you to go away?

  • You know, I just read her bio and in context, this act of hers is just one in a long series of missteps by her. She is a tempermental diva - extremely entitled. She needs to get over herself.

  • @dreamst1302 It would've blinded and distracted her. She had the right.

  • Mon dieu I wish I had been there!! That would be even more fun than Gypsy! Love Patti LuPone. You rule Patti :)

  • The person taking pics had no right as was explained before the show started. However, Patti;s rage ruined the show. This should have been dealt with by management and not the actor while performing. It is an outlandish expression of ego for something that was trivial...she was not acting as a professional and I guarantee that those in attendance will remember the tirade more than the performance.

  • @Gymnasticseverywhere she should have thrown a shoe at him. It should be a law actually because what if something reflective was on the stage and the flash blinded a crew person operating something suspended and heavy. Someone could die, just saying. . .

  • There are moments when she goes off stage, she could have easily informed stage management and had them removed. An outburst is great but really ruins a performance :P

  • Patti should stop being a diva...when disrespectful assholes stop taking pictures, letting their cellphones ring during performances, texting, talking and leaving during the curtain call because they can't wait the extra 2 minutes to get to their car. You go, Patti. At least someone's willing to take a stand.

  • You people obviously have no idea what its like to perform on stage. You're staring out into a black abyss where you really can't see people, and all of a sudden you have a bright flash in your eyes? Of course its distracting and blinding. If the same thing were happening at a sporting event, you'd be kicked out too. I bet all of you schmucks talk and text throughout movies too.

  • she overreacted. flash photography isnt THAT distracting. it was very disrespectful of the audience member to do that, but it was even worse the way patti reacted. she had every right to be upset and silently fume about it later. but stop the show? no way.

  • nick nack patty whack divas on a drone hahahhaha and o-preciate it.

  • You are a freaking idiot. How would I like it if people came to work and started taking pictures? She's a freaking actress for fuck's sake. There is no comparison. This is nothing other selfish prima donna bitch behavior.

  • patti's a bitch.

  • @grl008 No, she was right to do it. I've called people out on it before.... and they have stopped.

  • Bitch, calm the fuck down.

  • For everyone that keeps commenting how awesome and diva this is, I disagree completely. I'd be fucking pissed. You are on stage giving a show. A show that everybody in the audience paid to see. Shutup and sing! It'd be difference if she was being heckled by some loud fucker or so something that was bothering everybody else's enjoyment of the show. So somebody snuck a camera in? Big deal. Get over it and be a professional, not some prima donna diva bitch who's acting too full of herself.

  • @cdftaurus whole-heartedly agree!!!

  • @cdftaurus You are TOTALLY wrong. She IS onstage giving a show, and why should she have to put up with pictures being taken? Would YOU like it if someone you didn't know starting taking pictures of you at work?

  • @cdftaurus well taking a picture with a flash on IS doing something that bothers and distracts the other audience members, and the performers on stage, and clearly by the applause that she got they were happy that she did, what she did and i would have LOVED to have been there to see her do it, and she's definitely not a bitch..

  • @cdftaurus well then i guess thats why you aren't up on the stage, because I'm sure that if you ever were you would find it extremely distracting also, and the flash of a camera is bothering everyone else's enjoyment. i know i wouldn't NEVER want to be sitting in a dark theatre watching a show a see flashes.

  • Everyone is saying this ruined the performance... I would have loved to see this, for me this wouldve just made it better

  • @CenturianRule That would be fine if pics in the theatre wasn't illegal, and if the moron taking them was using a flash it's super dangerous to the performer, having a bunch of lights already shining in to their eyes to light up the stage.

    So you should just deal.

  • 24 people took pictures during Gypsy and fear for their lives.

  • @kelliletner Make that 28.

  • Lyrics?!

  • First of all this is hilarious. I love Patti so much, and I fully support her stance on this.

I also would really love to know the lyrics to this! What are the words between "two Tonys" and "taking off the Isotoners"?

  • Good for you Patti, enough is enough....some audience members are so unaware and obnoxious and have no idea what it takes to perform eight shows a week. Patti you are a brilliant and brilliantly trained singer and actress.

  • First, she is not in the league of Streisand, or Audra. I like her but really, get a grip. She was fired from "Sunset Boulevard." Maybe she can do a number on "Glee."

  • @mcatch23

Considering how few people have anything good to say about Sir Andrew, I'd call being fired from Sunset a good thing.

  • patti is just THAT epic. she can afford to do whatever the heck she wants, and it's totally fine. this is actually fantastic.

    love me some lupone.

  • I stand by what she did. If you're trying to act and sing, and you have a blinding flash of light in your eyes, I would definately be furious. You don't do that in a theatre, people. That can be really dangerous and I've seen things like that happen before. I am an actor too. So I completely understand. And it has NOTHING to do with Unprofessionalism. So if you think that, get it out of your head now.

  • @VisualSpotlight12 "...So if you think that, GTFO!"

Sorry, that's what I thought you were going to say! Haha.

I concur with your statement. I'm an actress, and it is, indeed, highly disrespectful, potentially dangerous, and not to mention, UTTERLY ANNOYING to have a big sparkle FLASH! off stage right when you're trying your damnedest to give a good performance.

  • I absolutely hate to be the one to say this, but:

It's...forgive me, kind of okay BECAUSE she's Patti LuPone

That's TERRIBLE for me to say, I know.

But...Gypsy had been revived 5 years (6 or 7 at the most) before this production. Everyone's seen Gypsy. You pretty much saw this show to see Patti in Gypsy. And this was Patti.

Besides, in a way, this was sort of in character. A little too much in character, maybe, but still. Besides, this remix is so worth that outrage. Bitch of Broadway <333

  • @TheDarkLordofTG i've never seen gypsy.

  • i love 0:34 where herbie and gypsy rose lee are pertified at the aahhshaaboomboomasfgakfrgm!

  • ...can't...breathe...xD

    This is brilliant.

  • I love her, but among Broadway insiders she didn't win the title of "The Bitch of Broadway" for nothing. She is notorious for holding up rehearsals. I know people who will NEVER work with her.

I saw her in concert however and she was gracious, and put on the best show I have ever seen. So maybe she's earned it.

  • LMAO!!!! Love your vid- have to say Patti was a big 'ole wuss.

NEVER break character; not even with the theatre on fire. This was for publicity , she got it, and YOU deserve it now, for an AWESOME remix! ♥ Great job!

  • I love that in her latest show, during one of the songs, she actually takes photos of the audience, which shows exactly how ridiculously distracting it is.

  • lmao!

  • You guys DO realize that this particular song where she "freaks out" is about show business and it IS in character for her to say stop taking pictures?

  • @thenight92 probably why she did it then :)

  • hehe I LOVE that title! Jeez people give her a break she's been acting forever--if she wants to be a diva she can be.

  • Omg, this is hilarious. Tears of laughter has sprung up. I'm totally watching that again.

  • I just find this hilarious...

  • It's never a good sign when you're a musical theatre actress and your diction is better when you are yelling than when you are singing.

  • This video never fails to make me laugh! HAHAHAHA! Why does it not have more views?!

  • LMAO

  • I LOVE PATTI

she can do whatever she wants in my opinion... her name was bigger than the title of the show and the director

russia 687 i am jealous of ur experience ;)

  • This is ridiculous. You can't defend her... that was SO unprofessional. One of the very first things you learn as a performer is to not let what the audience is doing get in the way of your performance. I'm not condoning the cameraperson's actions, but damn, Patti... I had respect for you.

  • @HikariDragonRyuu --Uh, its REALLY dangerous to be moving on a stage about 3 feet from the orchestra pit, and to be blinded by flashes. She had every right to stop him--I'd like to know where the ushers were--they should have stopped it before she had to.

  • @drewqq Have you heard of stage lights?

  • @davespy81 Yes I have heard of stage lights, only the gentleman taking the photos was using a flash. The horizontal arc from a flash bounces and temporarily blinds somebody already surrounded by a lot of light from a stage. It's sad anybody would try to justify putting a performer in danger during a performance.

  • @drewqq She wasn't in danger, at this point in the show she had already been preforming the number for over 8 months. She knew the staging and she knew where the lip of the stage was. She was never in danger and as I've stated she had no reason to stop the show. It was incredibly unprofessional, and any other actor who pulled a stunt like that would receive serious repercussions, lucky for her the show was already closing.

  • @davespy81 Oh boy. You seem to know it all. You've worked ON Broadway and on national tours like I have, and you know all about how a woman in her 60's is not in any danger of falling and breaking her leg or her hip just so some moron can brag that he got photos of her.

  • @davespy81 It may interest you to know that Katherine Hepburn, Christopher Walken, Bette Midler and Hugh Jackman have stopped shows because of something dangerous or detrimental to the show. Unless you've even walked on a Broadway stage, don't criticize anybody who has.

  • @drewqq I do happen to know that they have stopped shows and I've criticized them all for doing so. As far as you working on Broadway & Nat. Tours, not only is that point irrelevant but, I highly doubt it and with the mass veil of the internet it's very easy to fake an identity. And I will continue to criticize who ever I want as it's my prerogative as a paying audience member. If anyone pulled that shit at a performance I was at, I would demand a refund.

  • @davespy81 you have every right to criticize a performer from your seat in the audience but until you have been in a dangerous situation like being blinded on stage, you have no right to criticize a performer's decision to preserve her own safety. There's a great video on here where she talks about the very issue on Australian tv--you should go look at her reasoning. You'll understand if you ever work professionally in theatre.

  • @davespy81 Speaking as an actor, there is a HUGE difference between a constant light source that is focused, but a camera flash is a small burst of brilliant light that bounces all over your retina and leaves you blinded for approximately 2-3 seconds. this is considered harmful.

  • @dented42 I'm also an actor and while I do recognize the difference between a camera and a stage light I'd also like to point out various lighting effects produce similar effects.

And what is beyond that point is Patti was being completely unprofessional. Stopping a show to scream at an audience member is ridiculous, there was no reason behind it other than to keep the audience in constant fear of her and reinforce the reasons behind her diva reputation.

  • @davespy81 There are stage effects that include bright flashes, but gererally (at least in my experience), one is able to anticipate these and at just the right moment either blink or divert your eyes.

Although, I do agree that she was acting extremely unproffesionally, but there is a part of me that cheers for her, as I have wanted to do that sort of thing many a time.

  • The way I see it is, he was obviously taking pictures because he's a fan of hers. I get that it's rude, but she should appreciate that he's her fan. Doing that in front of a whole theater is ridiculous.

  • I appreciate your point, but here's food for thought: this idiot's using a flash and you are inches away from the sheer drop into the orchestra pit and a camera flash (as opposed to stage lights) does temporarily blind you. She snapped and was a bit ridiculous but having been there I applaud her for it.

  • @wmarkegard17 I heard an interview with Merman and she said she stopped a show once because some folks in the front row were boozing and making a lot of noise but she did it with class - Katharine Hepburn did the same in Coco - but also with class - this was totally lacking in class.

  • This is f-in hysterical! Sounds like Seth Rudesky's voice.

  • She was totally in her right. It is completely distracting to act with something flashing in your face. Concerts are different (pop not musical rendition) but theatre productions prohibitt cameras and so the person was in the wrong anyway. And also, it;s the wrong atmosphere.

  • I think it is incredibly unprofessional to stop a show and single out someone, scream at them, belittle them, and freak out, over PICTURES. Deal with it, Patti.

  • Good for Patti! As an audience member i resent people taking photos, videotaping, and letting their cell phones ring. That is more disturbing than stopping the show for a few minutes. She was right to have the jerk tossed out.

  • it's so irritating when people pull that kind of shit! good for Patti! somebody needed to say it and it's good that it was someone loud!

  • I was never a fan of hers until this moment She was 100% correct and she has since said that if she does not stand up for her audience, who will? I saw Bernadette Peters in a concert a few years back where someone cell phone rang for almost an entire song and she said NOTHING. Patti LuPone did audiences and her peers a huge favor and she shoud have received another Tony.

  • "I saw Bernadette Peters in a concert a few years back where someone cell phone rang for almost an entire song and she said NOTHING."

GOOD. Bernadette isnt going to scream and throw a tantrum like a 7 year old. "who do you think you are????" No Patti - who do YOU think you are? Just because you're good, doesnt mean you're god.

  • @violinist391

I love Bernadette. and that's how classy broadway stars...not divas...need to act. I love you Patti but this was too much B I T C-what....for a person in the audience...regardless of their stupidity. On a side note...I would have personally punched the person with the cellphone for ruining such a wonderful performance....and I can do that...beacuse Im not a broadway star...;)

  • I would've payed extra to witness this.

  • Trust me, it was AWESOME.

  • Hey Puppets....I don't think it hurt her career at all......you really have to be a part of Nroadway to get that fact but what the heck.....I don't think the Patti is hurting for a spot on Broadway right now!!

  • Love it!! patti is a DIVA BIATCH!! Not many could do that...only the Patti!! I LUV you Patti Lupone...you are the greatest!!

  • Well if they ever make a musical out of Mommie Dearest, we know who HAS to get the lead role of Joan Crawford!

  • Brilliant idea.

  • This is FANTASTIC!!! I love it!!!

  • OH LOL XD amazing

  • I guess "The Show Must Go On" is a forgotten concept. I don't blame her for being mad, but come on, don't ruin it for the rest of the audience, or at the very least be tactful.

  • Have you ever been on stage and had a flash camera go off? I have and I nearly fell off the stage since I was dancing when some idiot violated me. LuPone should get another Tony for public service.

  • Yes, I have, actually. It is very distracting. I don't blame her at all for being upset; I just think the situation could've been better handled than by angry yelling, but then again I know what it's like when your temper gets the better of you.

  • GOOD FOR HER.

besides the fact that it's illegal, 1, it's RUDE to take pictures in a theatrical setting like this expecially if you notice NO ONE ELSE is doing it, HELLO. 2, they give an announcement about that! be polite! 3, fortheloveofgod at LEAST turn the flash off to not be noticed, fool! 4, if you're in a zone, acting, and trying to sing and sing well and you keep seeing random flashes - you get OUT of your zone. NOT COOL. 5, it's distracting to the audience too!!

  • She may be a bitch, but a FABULOUS BITCH.

  • I'm sorry but she did the right thing, people don't realize that the actors can see flashes and red lights in the audience especially when it's one and coming from a specific place, Hugh Jackman did it during his play and no one called him a bitch!!

  • I disagree, I've just recently become a fan of hers but it's a complete double standard when Hugh Jackman can stop the production of a show and tell someone to stop taking pictures but then she does it and people say she's an attention whore and unprofessional, do you realize how rude that is of an audience member to take flash photography during a show, I would've stopped and said something to them too

  • WHY??!?! You don't seem like a 40-something gay man who's not getting any!!!

  • that's because I'm not, I'm a college student from Texas!!! And I really don't know what that has to do with anything!

  • Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

  • Is there an actor/singer who isn't an attention whore?

  • I love your name here....did you do this piece or are you a fan of the piece.....do tell!!

  • Who do you think you are? EXACTLY.....3 Times!

  • I love Patti LuPone. I'm glad she told off the people taking pictures. It's so annoying and disrespectful. It's against the law AND violates the singer's rights. People, just stop or else Patti will LuPWN you.

  • Whoever you are- I love you. THIS IS EPIC

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh my gosh, I'm laughing soooo freaking hard right now!

  • "You ain't Patti LuPone!

    She's workin' on the stage!

You're clicking in the house puttin' Patti in a rage!

You think you won't get caught?

You think you'll just get by?

But if that's what you believe, b!*ch you're RAINBOW HIGH!

Whoever did this is a genius.

  • Still does.

  • My god i love this- where can i find lyrics to the rap? I like breaking into song mid-class and this seems suitable for such occasions =)

  • I LOVE IT!

  • Of all the things in this world that could make me lose control of my bladder, this is number one!

  • Neely! Neely O'hara! LOL

  • i can barely contain my hi]ysteria!!! That is just too funny. Patti, I love you with all my heart, but this is just priceless.

  • Haha! Ah you gotta love her!

  • i love patti, i really do, but this is just hysterical. <3

  • That was HYSTERICAL! Loved it.

  • uh..seriously? she did that? wow...haha hysterical

  • 8 months later and this is still my favorite youtube video.

  • Amazing...

  • my god.

if i were the person taking pictures, i would be scared out of my mind. after hearing her yell like that, i wouldn't have to be asked to leave. i would have sprinted out of there.

  • If you listen to the full recording of the event, I think they did sprint out as fast as they could xD

  • @NewYorkerForGood I'd tell her to F off before I left. I'd leave even if I wasn't the person taking the pics. Who does she think she is? She is so full of herself its pathetic. Ive seen performers stride through flashes at shows. All of a sudden her life is in danger? LOL She sucks if she cant get through a show with a few flashes going off.

  • @evromsd I agree. Sure it's a sh*t thing to do to performers, but you don't stop the show, you go on. And she said everyone in the theatre had respect except that person, but what about the people that recorded the performance? When she said the "I won't continue" I though it was a total diva thing. I understand her frustration, but tons of other actors/actresses have had the same thing happen, but they've gone on with the show.

  • @evromsd well i'm pretty sure she said that the person took three pictures already... so they were really pushing it. She was obv. frustrated and house management wasn't doing their job. I absolutely support her to the fullest for stopping the show and throwing them out.. they deserved it.

  • @broadway0987 Still doesnt excuse her being a total bitch and pig ofa human being. No one should ever take things that seriously. I would ahve loved to ahve been there to tell her to fuck the hell off.

  • @evromsd You don't get it. Flash photography is distracting and can cause a performer to trip or make a huge mistake. then they'd have to restart the scene and would that would be a huge embarrassment to the actors. Stage management was not doing its job right in keeping photographers out of the theater. What if Patti didn't say anything? What if she tripped because the light from the camera distracted her?

  • @nyuurocks I get it, I go to plenty of concerts and shows. There is a proper and decent way to behave. She behaved like an uneducated animal. All she had to do was stop the show and ask the people in charge to do their job. What I dont get is why some people think that just cus someone can sing its ok for them to behave like a total pig.

  • @evromsd Okay well first of all at concerts you're normally allowed to take pictures, but this isn't a concert.. its a Broadway show so the people attending are the ones who should not be acting like the animals, and try to have respect for the performers and the other audience members... and you're right there is a proper and decent way to behave.. which is respecting the rules and not taking pictures.

  • @broadway0987 The picture taking goon bahaved poorly that dosne give this wench an excuse to behave the same or worse. She sucks.

  • @evromsd OH you're right.. she won two Tony awards because she sucks... you got it!

  • @broadway0987 She suck as person, seems a well educated Tony award winner would know how to behave like decent human being.

  • @evromsd I personally don't think she sucks at all as a person .. I had the of privilege meeting her and she was on of the most down to earth and nicest people I have ever met..

  • @evromsd

There's nothing indecent about calling a selfish piece of s*** a selfish piece of s*** and throwing his selfish ass out into the street where it belongs. Photographing a live performance is illegal; if you use a flash, it's dangerous to the performer as well.

  • @tonywrestles2 There is nothing decent about behaving like such a piece of shit either.

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • I would terrified if I were in the audience.

  • The maker of this video is a genius.

I love Patti, I really do, but this is priceless.

  • this is hilarious...

    <3 patti!!!

i love the part where she's like "3 TIMES" and then it's like the chorus singing "exactly!" (from sweeney todd)

  • HYSTERICAL!!!! I was there that night and I was sooo scared!

  • did you see the person who took the picture

  • I think Patti LuPone is a hot and sexy sugar mamma!

  • LOL. Okay, yes, funny and ridiculous. But, to be fair, you have no idea how stressful it is to be on stage and know that everything you do, any screwup, anything, could end up on YouTube, online, in whatever newspaper, whatever. Yes, that she freaked out is funny, but.. I understand her frustration.

  • so do i. just not to the extent. kevin spacey pulled this in London too and rightfully so. i just think honestly, it was a combination of another closing show, her last performance and the idiot who took the photos all got to her. did the videographer get caught? lol

she is a veteran of 30 years and i have seen the little girl (cosette) from les miserables have a light fall during her performance of the Castle on a Cloud and have one small flinch and keep singing strong.

  • Broadway is a dangerous place for audiences and actors. Long hours, bitterness over casting, fights with directors, yelling at photographers...there's no business like show business!

  • 5 months later, this is still as amazing as it was when i first saw it. ♥

  • lol claps for patti!

  • It honestly doesn't matter if what she did was right for an actor to do or not. I'm sure almost any actor can see both sides, and it's not surprising she freaked out at a VERY emotional point in the show.

What matters is: this is absolutely hilarious.

  • I love how at 0:19, a few of the trumpeteers are still not sure whether or not to stop so they keep playing and then realize that if they play another note, Patti will behead them with her diva powers.

  • I know it to be true that the person taking pictures that night was a photograher from the New Yorker and he was doing a piece on her final performance. She was told in advance that he would be there. I guess she "forgot." In the end she had to write an apology.

  • Yeah but he was using flash. That was her problem. It's not safe.

  • That is absolutely not true. There was a photographer from the New Yorker there on a different night. Unless you really know what is "true", keep it to yourself.

  • Omigod. Patti LuPone, yelled at audience member.

  • i fucking love you lollololololol you've been lupwned.

  • hilarious

  • My landlord must think I'm nuts because he and his family live right above my apartment, and I'm always singing this song in the shower! Why? Because I LOVE IT!

  • Damn Patti! Yous a dick! I love it!!

  • *O* precciate it.

    You just got Patti LuPwned!

  • Patti LuPwned

  • Is it true she had to pay an Actors' Equity fine for this incident?

  • i really wouldnt doubt it..

she totally broke the 4th wall..and stopped a show..in the middle of a huge moment..

    then started it again..lmfao..

    thats sooo ridonkulous..

if i was watching really into the show and the moment..and then just got smacked out of it for her to bitch...i would be upset..and entertained..idk..

    def..once in a lifetime thing..lol

  • I have a feeling this came out harsher than she normally would intend. I mean, she was in character at a highly emotional point in the show. I don't blame her for being upset, but I imagine she didn't mean to be so harsh.

  • i hope she did, that dude deserved it

  • Have you ever walked downstage with lights in your eyes that you're USED to....and then someone hits you with a FLASH!? I't is actually dangerous, people.

  • i hate when youre on stage and people take pictures with the flash on! it hurts your eyes and interrupts your scene. i totally understand where shes coming from!

  • Go girl, Patti! Beat up that Bastar*!

  • loved this, go Patti, go Patti, go Patti

  • Best thing ever...
