They realize that we taste different from seals and fish but then we start bleeding, and that's what causes them to go after the person. Like @soberdave1971 said, it came in during high tide, got stuck there, then left with the next tide. Maybe instead of thinking that murdering an animal is a solution, you should do some research and learn your facts(:

my friend's dad is a teacher at Woods Hole, which is where this took place. The shark was closely monitored. They even attempted to feed it, but it showed no signs of wanting to eat. Came in on the tide, left on a high tide.

However, there are numerous documented cases of Whites being in straight fresh water rivers and estuaries for short periods of time. Usually less than a couple hours at a time. They would need brackish water to live indefinitely, but they can survive for short periods in fresh water.
