Congratulation mate you are now famed as the teacher of ukulele for Frank Skinner. I thought the program was really good did you all see it Skinner On Formby
Hello Chap. I have been learning from your videos for a while now. I am sure i have the theory of the Fan stroke ( in fact i know i have) But!! i am struggling to get it as you are. I have a £25 soprano UKU but i have just bought a £120 Concert UKU both wooden. does the Fan & split stoke only work on the Banjo UKU. That is my question. Ps one day ill post my own video for you to see & Laugh Cheers Harry
Hi Jonathan, I use the chords from the book that the GFS sell but I certainly wouldn't disagree with you because I know George did use different chords than the ones widely used today, for example Mother What'll I Do Now and TT Races, when I watched the video's it's not the same chords I was taught. Trouble is I've played it like that for so long it sounds wrong when I go open strings, I'll play along to the record and have a listen. Thanks for the help I'm always interested to learn something.
You get the same soppy grin George had when doing his solos! Great stuff. I use the other tuning because i am just starting. I shal have to give it a go.
Thanks so much for posting. I saw some of your other vids you play lefty. I am lefty and play with the uke upside-down - easier to read music. I can't seem to play righty at all. Any suggestions?
I have to be honest, I flip most of my video's to make it easier to watch, some slip through the net! I play left handed and tune my uke for a lefty, I can read chord boxes ok now my brain seems to magically flip them! I wish I'd forced myself down the righty route, then I could play other ppl's ukes.
Hi Peter, helpful stuff. I've been able to do the fan stroke for a while, with either third, fifth, or fourth+fifth for a strong sound, and it sounds the same. However I've never managed to get it to LOOK as good as you! i.e. like a fan opening out in slow motion as you do it. When you get chance, could you give us some tips on how to make it LOOK good too?!
Very descriptive, Pete. I'll be viewing this a few more times. I hadn't considered the tapping of the 1rst string at the end of the fan cycle (as you demonstrate), but it does really complete the pattern nicely.
Andy Eastwood told me he uses the ring finger because then he can throw in the extra little finger every now and then for extra roll effect. Quite clever hey. I use my little finger and throw in all the other fingers every now and then for extra roll effect. So it's true what you say: it's all up to the player, everyone has its own technique which is cool.
Damn, I've spent hours practising the down/up strokes with my ring finger and thumb, now I'll have to see if using my index finger for the upstroke is easier. One way or the other, I'll get it, thanks to people like you posting videos on here. Ta mate, keep on posting, please.

Thanks for this tutorial, you have created another Fan Stroker. I appreciate you taking time to explain slowly and in easy speak the method.

Wow, I didn't know that. When I get a bit more familiar with the stroke I'll give the little finger trick a try. Thanks very much :) :)
