  • Apple valley rules suck it LA

  • I gonna go up there soon

  • I was always so curious about where more of the house is. Is it below the main room?

  • Now every time we drive by I'll look at that house differently :)

  • Thanks for the interesting facts on the apple valley hilltop house!

  • Hey I think I see my house. No seriously. I see my house!!! I took a walk u there too!!! The view was amazing!!

  • awwwwww apple valley look soooooooooooo beautiful i can't wait to move there

  • cool stuff .. nice i like it =)) thanks for sharing =)) god bless

  • What was the temp. on that day?

  • @PurpleHeartVeteran Mid 80's

  • i live there :D

  • Be great at night up there

  • LOVED IT

  • Mojave Dan...Great video my friend. I have always wondered about this beautiful home up on the big hill. One can imagine how majestic this space must have been at one time. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Did Nixon actually own/live in the house to write his memoirs?? great post!!

  • Yes I have been there--Back in the 80s it was part of the AV inn and they had parties up there--I DJ d a private christmas party in the hilltop house. The guest went up and down in a van--they did not want some drunks driving down that hill-but I was allowed to drive up and down to haul my equipment and records.

  • Thnks very much for sharing that. All my life I've wondered what it looked like up there, and what some of the history was behind it.

  • Sad to see the house in this condition... graduated from AV in '82... Dad moved us there in '64, after I was born... He was a mailman and his route was just southwest of the house... Roy Rogers and Tom Selleck were on his route... haven't been back since my folks passed, but it doesn't look like it did as a kid...

  • I went to that house around 1986-87... When I was a partying teen in High School. Went at night and it was very spooky.... It was pretty bad looking back then, but it has gotten a lot worse in the years since then. Thank you for making this video, it is nice to walk down memory lane. :)

  • My brother was married there back in the 80's

  • Thanks for the video. I've been researching all morning this house. Went up to it in 94' with my cousin when I use to live in apple valley. haven't been back to Cali since. But yeah I Remember mostly was the scenery up there. And me and my cousin ran into a beehive and got the heck down from that hill. Ha ha ha. I still don't know what that place is. Was that the inn? Or someone else owned it. Anyways thanks again

  • hey i ran to that house for cross counrty i run for sitting bull middle school one of the best school ever.

  • hey i ran to that house for cross counrty i run for SITTING BULL MIDDLE SCHOOL .

  • When I first moved to Apple Valley, 2 yrs ago, I had heard that Tom Selleck owned that house in the 90's lol.

If I had the money I would love to buy it and rebuilt it.

  • Wow - what a difference a few decades make!! I was born here in AV in 1955. I remember how amazing the house was and what a unqiue and distintive place AV was. The Inn, the Town and the Village all made it seem quaint. I left in '74 and just returned in June 2010. What a shock! Things have grown so much and it is a shame to see the Inn and the Hilltop House in such terrible shape. A few years ago I saw Newt's old house listed on eBay for sale. No buyers. It would be great to restore.

  • I was stationed @ GAFB from 1984~1992 (when it closed). My family and I used to live in Apple Valley, my kids were born at GAFB. We used to drive by the hilltop house every morning going to work, and we always wondered why no one lived up there. Thanks for the video and info. I miss AV. I moved back in 1999-2004 and it had changed alot. Moved back to VA now.

  • I would love to be able to own and restore this house. I always thought they kept it up. You would feel like you ruled the world living in that house. I can't believe it's torn up like this. Interesting vid!

  • dang thats sad..i wish the town would make it a historical landmark..

  • me and my girlfriends went up there twice in one day it was so interesting but sooo tiring!

and now my cousin and I are taking my lil brothers up there :)

  • i have always wondered about that place. my mom told me alot about that place. i left about 4 months before the video was made. i wouldve been glad to know what was up there.

  • I went up yesterday for the first time and now understand why you had to catch your breath!! So steep!

  • Wow always wondered about that house.. It kinda lets you know "hey I'm in Apple Valley" Always looked for it when I lived there. Maybe the state could turn it into a "look out" for visitors? make it a tourist attraction?? Someone should go to the City council and propose a vote!!!!

  • I miss AV and the Hilltop House. Newt Bass had it built for $275,000 in 1959. What a shame to see it fallen to ruin.

  • I was at the base back in 84 & 85, Man things have changed. I wish I could remember more of my time there. Is the Roy Rodgers place still there? Thanks for the tour anyway.

  • @golfrick007 roy rodgers place is still there on tomohawk and tigertail

  • omg its so sad that police dont do nothing about this ,this is history for apple valley, people

  • ive been up thare like 4 times its awesome i mite put a vid up 2 MITE idk that if i wana walk all tha way thare

  • Thanks Dan... it's been a long time since I was up on that hill. it's sad to see that NO ONE has taken care of that landmark. Keep the videos coming. From one of the forgotten Apple Valley Honorary Mayors... Randy Andrew (AVHM 1980-81)

  • Thanks for sharing the video. My friend and I went there today for the first time... the view is breathtaking... so beautiful... and yes it is just too bad that people vandalized it... but hopefully someone can buy it and turn it into something that everyone can enjoy...

  • wow i lived here for most of my life and ive always wondered about that house, your video is full of a lot of interesting stuff, i heard its worth like 3.6 or 6.3 billion dollars but if anyone bought it they would have to destroy it because the building codes werent enforced as they are today or maybe cuz it takes fire trucks and police to get up there, correct me if im wrong but its a very cool video

  • @black60459 - It was listed for 1.2 million four years ago, but that's a stretch especially in this economy and what it would take to renovate or build on the property. Keep in mind that the house sits on about 20 acres of land too. That's a lot of land in the middle of a lot of development. The big problem is much of the land is granite hills, which is a little tough to build on.

  • Correct me if Im wrong but the Town of Apple Valley owns that house now and typical politician's let it go to crap while they sit fat on the hog!!! They also let the area behind the old airport be developed for low income housing and turning that area into a Compton of Apple Valley. You can't even walk through that area at night without the risk of being stabbed or shot!

  • @hulk625 - Here's your corrections: The Hilltop House and the 20 acres that it sits on is privately owned. The area behind the old airport was originally developed for airmen stationed at George Air Force Base. Los Angeles County started relocating their welfare and parolees to that area shortly after the base closed. TOAV and San Bernardino County tried to stop this but it was too little too late by the time the State of California took action.

  • @MojaveDan The house is for sale and it comes with a surrounding 34, not 20, acres. It is also private property and the owner is not happy with people like this treating it as a nature trail.

  • @bendar13 Apologies for my trespass, but I felt it necessary to make the videos in light of the destruction as well as the historical significance of the location. If the owner is concerned about the nature hikers, perhaps they can make an effort to secure the property or selling it. Frankly, it doesn't look like they're trying at all. Also, my videos may actually draw someone out to purchase the property.

  • The "current" owner should do a better job of securing it. With that being said, I thank Dan for making the video. What the current owner may not understand is that house is apart of our history too. Though some of us can not afford to purchase it, it DEFINATELY means something to us and we are just as devistated at its ruins. It makes us sad. I wish for someone to purchase it and restore it to what it was "back in the day".

  • @bendar13

    Seriously?

they arent doing anything with it...

so tell the owner to stuff it.

  • wow ..thanks for posting this video i live in apple valley for about 6 years now and i've always wondered what the view was like up there ,people i know say its a great view and now i believe them to bad its a long walk lol ...

  • I stood there, in that park where you started out. Actually took a nap in that park. Took a pillow outta my t-bird and layed on the grass and passed out, woke up to an old man making tomato and onion soup right next to me on a coleman stove. He told me I should be a trucker and that there was a school right up the road. Guess I looked like I needed direction. Kinda miss Apple Valley. Kinda!

  • Thanks for sharing this video. I live in Apple Valley and I can see it when standing in my front yard. It is sad to see that people have mistreated the house. Maybe the town will but it for it's historical value...Tom

  • i lived in Apple Valley my whole life and i have to say it makes me happy that this historical is now booming once again......the town should really fix that hilltop house, it has too much history to let it go.

  • Hi Dan! Thanks so much for posting this video. I've lived in Apple Valley for twenty years and never been uo to The House. . . I recently moved to WA and found this video while dreaming about home. I've always wanted to see what it looked like upclose, and now I have, thanks.

  • i used to live right around the corner from here

  • i live in apple valley,& once i'm 18 I'M LEAVING!!!!!!!!

  • damnit why don't you have more views.

  • My grandfather was the architect for the Hilltop House in Apple Valley, Ca

  • behind the distribution center and behind the hills is part of the Cemex victorville cement plant, the largest cement plant in north america, my dad used to work there

  • I used to live in lucerne valley, when I went to walmart in apple valley I always wondered what that house was like

  • Thanks Dan for the memory, I can't believe how Hill Top House is no longer the beauty it once was. So many good memories were created in that home. So many Celebs were invited to Visit Apple Valley and to stay at the Hill Top House, It was a grand home, it breaks my heart to see what had happened to it. I use to ride over to the stables that use to be next to Lyons Park, but as you see that is no longer there.

  • @javasdarlin I completely forgot about those horse stables. I rode with them when they would rent out trail rides. Wow! thanks for the memory.

  • What a shame! =( This is so terrible. Wouldn't it have been amazing to live there back in the day?

  • Hey I live in Apple Valley

    It's such a sham!

  • So sad to see the house in such a shambles. The town of Apple Valley would do well to buy the house, restore it to original condition, and set up a museum or some sort of facility to serve the community and preserve its history. Or perhaps a developer could redevelop the complex into a sort of corporate retreat center...

  • @Matt314159 That you LeGrand?

  • wow this is so sad to see..and depressing...why must people ruin beautiful things..thanks for filming this and showing us what happened ):

  • I go to that house all the time I live right down the street.. Lots of people jog and run up the hill to get to the house it's pretty cool

  • So sad...I was married on the lawn outside the Hilltop House, and had the reception inside. It was so beautiful back then. (and I have wedding pictures to prove it.) That innovative indoor/outdoor pool was the cause of the fire...teenagers swam into the house from the outside. Guess it was all kind of foreshadowing -- my marriage was a shambles, and so is the place where it began. :)

Nice to see you are sharing AV history with others, Dan.

    Take care,

    Vicki Hines, your math teacher!

  • Hey Dan, I grew up in AV, we went to school together starting at Mariana. Anyhow, I remember this place well and always wondered why nobody ever used it. I think the view is priceless, what a shame to see it ruined. Someone should put a museum or something there. Even another hotel would be great. I hear real estate is doing pretty poorly out there, maybe this is a buying opportunity? :)

    Take Care,

    David McDonald

  • Mojave dan, imma let you finish but Apple Valley Minnesota is the best Apple Valley of all time. of all time.

  • F.Y.I. - Apple Valley, MN was named after Apple Valley, CA.

  • This is so sad to see. I moved up there in 1966. My dad sold property and one of the things the Apple Valley Ranchos did was take their clients to the Hilltop house so they could see the view. This is so sad to see it is in shambles. It was exquisite when it was new. I remember it caught on fire a few years after that. I was still in high school. AV sure has changed. Sorry to see so much has gone down hill. I remember the beautiful rock in the living room and the beautiful indoor/outdoor pool.

  • @rocketdog52 we moved there in 86, my dad sold realestate too, moved away in 99, it sure all went to hell...

  • This was not where Nixon wrote his memoirs. It was at a different house in Apple Valley after he lost to JFK. Even if this was the house, that would be nothing to brag about since Nixon was a sad and disgustingly evil man.

  • SAD SAD SAD!!!!!!!!!!

  • So. How much for the fixer now? I might be interested in it at the right price.

  • From what I know through my connections, a local broker had the property listed for $1,300,000. It's clearly not worth that much, which is why there wasn't a single offer for it at that price.

  • This just breaks my heart to see what has happened to our "Hilltop House". I grew up in Apple Valley starting from 1966. My parents still live there not too far from the hill. I never went up there all these years, so this was my first time seeing it. I can't believe the city of Apple Valley would let this happen to such an icon of the Valley. They are letting all the rich history just rot away while they build it into another "cookie cutter city"....Newt Bass must be rolling over in his grave.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!Danny, That was great!!!!! of all my years living in AV, I never have been in the Hilltop house. But always looked up at it while driving by. I did however ride my horses on the trails and over the mountain. Loved the old steak fry. Its so sad to see what idiots have done to The Hilltop House. Tami Berg

  • It's awesome how you risked your buns going up that hill which Apple Valley runners call "the beast" due to its steep incline. Can't wait to see what's next! :)

  • Thanks Dan! That is the first time I ever saw the inside of the Hill Top House. Which is pretty sad since I have lived here for about 40 years. I Wish I could have seen it in its Glory years. I always heard of the great parties they had there and the numerous celebrities that had visited there. Hopefully, one day they will decide to do something with this property again.

  • I remember seeing that house and being told that AV Inn owned it and used it for receptions and such. Not sure how much of that is true. I always wondered what happen with it when AV Inn was sold. It is so sad to see an iconic building in such condemned shape.

    Dawn W

  • Mojave Dan I HAVE BEEN UP TO THE HILLTOP HOUSE AND IT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL HOUSE AND I USED TO LIVE IN APPLE VALLEY,CAL 2 YEARS AGO

  • We had our wedding reception there, March 1986.

  • Awesome video and information Dan! I'd never gone to the hill top house when I lived in AV. I just admired it, while driving past and looking up. I bet it was beautiful in its day! The views are great!
