  • thanks to this vid i knew exactly what to do, how to do it and what to expect. 30 minutes ago leak..now, no leak. Thanks!

  • Leaking and stiff movement in the cartridge and faucet arm - first thought, call the plumber; second thought, MAYBE I can do this myself - (never worked on a single lever before).

Found your video - bottom line, successful repair and wifey is happy.. Thanks for your help.

  • I am encountering an issue where the main screw attaching everything to the cylinder will not come out (Beginning at 2:25 in your video). I have tried everything and it just spins but does not dislodge from whatever it is connected to.......what are my options in this case as getting this screw out kinda affects everything??

  • @DirtyPandaDC Either the top of the cartridge it screws into is stripped, or the keyway it goes into on the handle is mangled. I have no idea how that would be possible though. Try lifting the handle while unscrewing it, I think it's just stripped and that might help it start coming out. Otherwise, drill it out. The threads it goes into are part of the cartridge so don't worry about messing them up.

  • @tedjar The pivot mechanism of the handle has broken and can see what happens with the turning of the screw....and the entire cartridge is spinning. There is no leakage...so is this normal?? I can open the faucet but to stop the water I need to push down on the top of the handle.

In order to repair I need to remove the screw but have no way to brace the cartridge for resistance to remove the screw. Should I try pulling the whole cartridge out with the handle or just get a new faucet?

  • @DirtyPandaDC THe handle should not allow the cartridge to spin independently. Since you need a new handle anyway, just cut/mangle/destroy it and get it off. Then you should be able to replace the cartridge. Check with Moen directly for replacement parts if you can't get them locally. Otherwise just replace the faucet, especially if the rest is not in good condition.

  • Thanks to your video I was able to repair the dripping kitchen faucet today. Your the man!

  • I'm sure you've gotten many responses like this (I haven't read the posts), but THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! I'm good at taking things apart (and usually at putting them back together), but my locking nut was so badly frozen in place that I had become convinced that it was an integral part, and I would have to remove the faucet from the sink in order to get at the cartridge. Your video showed me the way, and now the faucet is not only not leaking, but works far better than it has for many years!

  • thanks ray romano

  • tedjar, you are my hero!!! 64-year-old single, mechanically challenged woman had NO PROBLEM AT ALL as long as I followed your instructions. You've no idea how empowering this is!!! And my critters don't have to listen to me swear...thanks so much, really

  • If you cannot get the horseshoe clip to fit back in with the new one, do the following:

    1. Pray 2. Plastic tabs on the new cartridge must line up with the existing slots. 12 and 6 position, like a clock. Must be aligned exact or the retainer clip with not slip in easily. 3. This new cartridge must be pushed down all the way and aligned on top with those plastic tabs on new cartridge. 4. When you push in retainer clip you can see the entire clip on top. 5. Call Moen Tech Support

  • I am having trouble with the disassembly. All is fine until I get to the step at about 3:00 in the video, when you "loosen the locking nut". When I turn the locking nut more than one rotation, it acts as though it is held in place with rubber -- it twists itself back into its former place. I turn, it turns itself back. The more I turn, the more forcefully it snaps back. I'm thinking that perhaps an old O-ring is adhered to it underneath or something. Help!

  • @levarfan Are you sure the entire center section of the faucet hasn't come loose from the base and you are twisting the entire center section of the faucet with the hoses and whatnot under the sink? I don't see what else would make it act that way....

  • I replaced the cartdridge, and water flows properly now. But when I use the side sprayer some water drips, or nothing comes out at all. The faucet also stops putting out water, and to get water to come out out of the faucet again I need to jiggle the cable or just wait for something to unlodge?

    Thanks for your vid!

  • Attempted to begin my Moen faucet repair...popped the cap and went to unscrew the attachment screw that attaches the handle to the cartridge but it just spins without disconnecting from the cartridge.....I've held the handle and just watch the rubber and whatever just spin in the barrel. Holding the handle doesn't keep it from spinning and can't figure out any way to loosen the screw.

Any advice you can provide or should I just get a whole new faucet??

  • @DirtyPandaDC I can't see how this is possible unless the handle has actually broken inside so that the cartridge top can spin around in it. Normally the shaft is flat on the sides so that it is keyed to the handle. You might have to drill out the screw and find a replacement, and maybe a new handle too. Depending on what you want to do you might just get a new faucet...

  • thank you, thank you, thank you. worked perfectly for me and saved me anywhere from $20-$70! Yay! Much appreciated.

  • Thanks for the information. We followed pretty good but made some errors. Our current problem ... we can't get that little clip horseshoe back in. Any tips. Should it slip in and out easily. Also, it was in the rear, can we put it in the front?

  • @JackVFogarty Use the plastic tool with a piece of wood on top to press the cartridge down all the way. Then use the plastic tool and the wrench to turn the cartridge very slightly until it lines up. You can put it in from either side.

  • @tedjar Thanks Again. This worked perfectly. And using the plastic tool to line it up - finally it slipped in lilke it was made for it!! But it takes patience and very very slight moves.

  • I have a single handle moen cartridge m2500. it does not leak. the problem is when the handle is used to turn water off it doesnt turn water off all the way. I need to apply direct pressure to the index cap area for it to turn off completely??

    Thanks

  • @Juglarspray Check if the little plastic part around where the handle lever goes through the cap part of the handle is present. Also check if everything is tight and that the end of the handle lever is engaged into the groove in the nut and not sitting on top.

  • Thanks for your advise, after spending about $10 on parts and grease, and the frustration of the stripped set screw, I just decided to buy a new high-neck two handle faucet this morning. Of course, the tight quarters are making the removal of the old one difficult, I've gotten everything except the faucet nut. Will the grease help loosen this up?

  • @bwphoto25 If you are trying to take off the nuts off the faucet under the sink, get a basin wrench, its designed to let you do that. Basically a self-adjusting wrench on a stick....

  • I took mine apart and just replaced the retainer clip and o-rings and cleaned everything well, but after putting everything back together, now when you turn it on, the sprayer comes on as well. Any thoughts?

  • @bwphoto25 The sprayer on/off is controlled by the squeezy handle on it.... it is probably just coincidental that it got stuck open. Try whacking it against the sink a few times and see if it shuts off, otherwise just replace it with a new one for a few bucks.

  • I had a leak at the base that looked just like yours several years ago, but i just hand tighten the base of the spout and it seemed to stop, save an occasional leak or two. But now it was doing it again, so I did the same thing, but this time now every time I use the water it leaks under the sink, and the way the cabinet is made, it's almost impossible to get to it from underneath (I can't even see it). The cabinet was originally built for a tiny sink. What should I be replacing? Thanks!

  • @bwphoto25 You're going to have to look back there somehow. Try using a mirror. The only thing under there that could leak only when the faucet is on is the hose to the sprayer, so check that out (including where it connects to the sprayer itself) Otherwise the seal of the faucet to the sink might be loose/bad, and water leaking from the faucet up top is going under the base and coming out under the sink.

  • Hi, thanks was able to change my catridge!

  • replacing the cartridge... i got the brass cart. to replace the plastic cart. the retainer clip does not fit; will not go in. now, am at an impasse.

  • @marciaSHARMA It will go in. Push the cartridge down hard with a block of wood or something on top of the plastic tool. Then use the tool to turn the cartridge slightly side to side until the clip slides in...

  • Thanks for the vid. Mine won't divert pressure to the spray head. I'm going to fix a slight drip by replacing the cartridge. Will that do it, or do I need another part?

  • @barrmatt2 N/M... I read the comments a little further. Contact Moen for a diverter! Thanks!

  • Well - I'm down to the retaining clip - I've got to find a flathead screwdriver small enough to fit in the gap. I hope, I hope, I hope, I can fix this myself! Myself and the help from you most excellent video!

  • By the way - thanks to your video(s), I'm going to attempt to replace my cartridge - unfortunately, I rarely have any luck with plumbing repairs. You make it look so easy. Wish me luck (I don't mind trying - if I mess up - I'll call in a professional)!

  • ? - Is there a difference in types of plumbers grease? I found "silicone grease" and "waterproof grease" (and bought both just in case (at Home Depot).

  • @Candice157 Use the waterproof grease....

  • @tedjar, I will! Thanks for all your help and wish me luck, I'm determined. But if I can't get it together, I'll just have to call in a plumber. Plumbing hates me! :o)

  • Thanks for the information last week. I changed the cartridge and o rings. The issue that I have now is that the water is not coming out with as much force as before. It rakes 10 min to fill the sink up. I was thinking that maybe I used too much lube. I wiped all of the excess lube, but to no avail. What can possibly be wrong? Thank You.

  • @scatdogg Take the aerator off and see how much water flows then. It might just be clogged with crud you loosened up during the cartridge change.

  • Absolutely BRILLIANT. Never would've been able to do it without this video. THANK YOU!

  • Oh my gosh...! just fixed my first Faucet! Wonderful Instructions, thanks for making this project a success!!

  • Hello, my Uncle broke the screw head off of the handle screw. Does the cartridge come with another screw? Or, is my uncle going to have to purchase another fixture? How can the screw be taken out now that the head is broken off?

    Thanks

  • @scatdogg Once you take the handle off, you might be able to remove the stump of the screw from the cartridge, but if it was so stuck that it broke off then it's probably not coming out. Just replace the cartridge since the screw goes into the end of it and find another screw in the hardware aisle. (They don't come with the cartridge)

  • Nice video. How can I find out if it is the o-rings or the cartridge? I don't want to spend money if I don't need to. Thanks

  • @scatdogg If it leaks at the base while it is on, then the orings are bad. If it drips while it is off, then replace the cartridge. If you need to replace the cartridge do the orings at the same time since they are only a few $ and you will already have it apart.

  • @lucalivereid Well this is the part where you need to use creative thinking. You could try a slide hammer with a vise-grip attachment or getting the strongest guy you know to try and rip it out. Just be careful not to bend or damage the sink because that will cost you a lot more than a new faucet. You could also try drilling out the plastic but that will be quite a tricky job. This is one of the reasons I like the brass cartridges much more.

  • Thanks for this video! It was very helpful! I did not know what the plastic thing was that came with the cartridge in the package. The directions were inadequate - no text, only pictures. Without your video, I'd still be struggling to replace the cartridge! Thanks for posting!

  • I have just done the repair on a Moen single handle fawcet. However,I have a problem reinstalling the handle. The handle is connected by means of a screw with an allen head.It was extremewly difficult to reinstall the handle and it does not work properly. When I raise the handle to provide water the handle droops down to a closed position. Can anyone advise or help? I am frantic!

  • @gleasonjoseph23 You may not have engaged the lever into the groove on the nut. Take the handle off, grab the base of the handle with one hand and the lever with the other. Pull the handle up in relation to the base. Turn it so it is at a 45 degree angle (lever should be on the higher side) away and then place it down on the faucet and roll it forward into a level position. Then put the screw back in. Watch part 2 of the video where i put it back on and you can see it done.

  • I can tell your not a master plumber

  • This is exactly how a how-to video should be shot. Exactly to the point, with no side chatter talking about stuff that isn't relevant. This is one of the best how-to videos I've seen on youtube.

  • This video saved me a LOT of money. I had no idea the sink even had a cartridge. I ordered the brass like you said, Found it for $13 online. I was ready to spend over a hundred on a faucet and a hundred and fifty for a plumber to install it. I'm so grateful i found this video. Thanks a million.

  • Outstanding video quality, narration and information.

My Moen 7100 kitchen faucet was squirting water out the side of the faucet base when running water. I replaced the cartridge with a brass one - nice smooth action, but same problem.

I viewed this video (Parts 1 and 2), learned how/why to remove the faucet and replace O-rings. Put it all back together and now it's all water-tight and like-new.

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!

  • Hi tedjar, thanks for the info. I do have a quick question. I have a moen banbury faucet. Instead of a screw under the cap, it has what at first glance looks like a hex head but it is too round to fit any of the hexes I have, nor any of the 30 or so-odd screwdriver heads I have. Any ideas? Thanks, by the way for this video. It sent me in the right direction! Jim

  • @PastorJimOliver From what I can see by taking a look at the faucets in that line, I think they may be somewhat different from the old style shown here. I haven't actually seen inside a faucet like yours, so I can't really say what it could be. Try giving Moen a call or looking up your faucet on their website. They have fairly decent customer service.....

  • Excellent work! Instructions were spot on! Thanks for taking the time to do this!

  • Great concise video. I had never done this before and your video made it easy!!

  • Thanks. It happens when the faucet is running . I will call Moen. And as an aside, thanks for inspring me to finally open a YouTube account. It took a while but I finally figured out why I couldn't set it up. World, Be prepared to be inundated with videos from my cell phone.

    Thanks again,

  • I have just been viewing your excellent Moen repair video. I have a similar Moen faucet but it has a pull out spout instead of the fixed. It is about a dozen years old. (We noticed lots of water in the cabinet below last night.) Mine has the same flat top with the Moen logo as the one in the video. I cannot find any models that look like yours or mine on the Moen page. How can find the correct model number to replace the cartridge? Thanks.

    Len

  • @modemjunkie The cartridge is not your problem, it would only cause the water to drip when its off or hard operation. You probably have an issue with the hose for the pull-out sprayer, a drain leak, or something else. Run the water and look around for the source under the sink.

For the right parts, your best bet is to call Moen directly and get what you need. They are generally helpful on the phone.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!! I did have trouble putting in the new cartridge, though... it didn't want to advance in all the way so that I could put in the U clip properly and I really had to force it in - just seemed like it had some pressure behind it. I do have a question - do you know what could cause the hand sprayer to spray weaker now with the repair? The water supply would shut off when I engaged the hand sprayer but now it doesn't and the water pressure in the sprayer is weak

  • @clamirande76 There should be some type of diverter valve on the valve body, visible when you remove the spout. It's there to send the water to the sprayer when it detects the drop in pressure while you are using it. They are not universal like the cartridges though, so its hard to say what you need. Your best bet is to contact Moen directly (they actually have decent customer service) and have them help you get the right part.

  • The handle on my facuet is stiff when I try and turn on the water. If I follow your instructions from 2:08, will popping that cover tap and then loosening the screw underneath make the handle less stiff to move?

  • @gaIIery The screw just attaches the handle to the top of the cartridge and should be tight. Loosening it will only make the handle flop around. You need a new cartridge....

  • @tedjar It's been stiff since the day it was installed (Oct. 31st, 2008). Always hoped it would eventually loosen up with use, but it hasn't. Does it sound to you like the cartridge was just defective when he put it in?

  • @gaIIery The cartridge contains all the moving valve parts in the faucet, so that's about all there is. The only other thing you can check is to take the top handle off and make sure the groove in the top nut is not clogged with anything or really crusty. I'd suspect the replacement cartridge may have been a cheap knockoff plastic cartridge. Changing it again should solve your problem.... you can take the cartridge apart and lubricate it, but while it's apart its probably easier just to change.

  • @tedjar Many thanks!

  • Tedjar, you are the man! I was dreading repairing my leaking Moen faucet (plastic cartridge was stuck so I didn't want to break anything and have to buy a new faucet) and you showed how to do it so easily. Breaking the old stem loose, using plenty of heat-proof plumber's grease and cleaning crucial areas were the keys to my repair. All your advice and comments were spot on. Now my repaired faucet feels and works better than ever! Kudos to you and Thank You very much!

  • Thank you so much! We were going batty trying to remove the stupid cartridge, and your explanation was a lifesaver! Thank you, thank you , thank you!!! :)

  • Thank You! Your video helped A LOT!

  • Thanks for posting! This helped my mom fix our STUPID faucet!!! It was very good!!!!

  • After I saw your video, I was pretty sure all I needed to do to fix my problem was replace the o-ring. And it turned out that was correct. Thanks a million!

  • thanks

  • Thank you very much for posting this. It was a great help! I did break the stupid bushing where the screw attaches the handle to the stem. My fault.

  • Great video my friend, really helped my mom and I fix our stupid faucet, thanks!

  • Going by the directions I coud NOT remove the old stem. After your video advice I was able to do the job. You are doing a great public service. Thank you! - Joe

  • @eojdisney One of the reasons I made this video is because the instructions are such a joke. I don't think you could pull the cartridge out of a new faucet with their instructions.

  • Great demo. Really nicely done.

  • Good deal man !! Thank you. I have the same exact faucet as the one you were showing and now no leak, Thanks again

  • Thanks, this is just what we needed! The old (plastic!) cartridge was horribly stuck, just like you said it would be. I found that putting some vinegar on it, then letting it sit with a damp rag on top for a few minutes, seemed to help loosen some old hard water deposits. If anyone tries this, test the vinegar in a small spot first and be careful not to get it on the base. Some finishes can be ruined by it (especially the "brass" ones.)

  • @HundredFrogsOne Good tip on cleaning.

  • @HundredFrogsOne Vinegar is also good for removing hard water deposits too. I use white distilled for dang near everything. Soap scum on shower cutain, bath tub, good stuff.

  • Hey this was a great video & was a really big help I never had to do faucet repair before so I just followed your video and was done in no time flat thanks for the help
