Funny story: I used to eat hot dogs with mustard, ketchup, and relish. However I always felt something was wrong with the taste. personally, I'm a fan of either Gulden's Spicy Brown mustard or a small bit of Sweet Baby Ray's bbq sauce. Even though the bbq sauce is slightly ketchup-based, it has more complex flavor notes than ketchup

Ketchup on a hot dog actually works pretty well. Funny enough, the reason that Chicagoans dislike ketchup but like the other stuff is backward. Ketchup actually works with the beef, whereas the mustard and relish overwhelms it. Cheese or ketchup, thanks.

For me it depends of what you mean by hot dog. If you mean a real beef and pork frank in natural casing, grilled to crackling perfection over an open flame... I would NEVER sully that with ketchup.

On the other hand, if by hotdog you mean some cheapo brand, mystery meat, thing-a-ma-jig that I tossed into the microwave for thirty seconds because I only have five minutes to wolf down lunch before flying out the door... you bet your ass I'm going to slather that thing in Ketchup!
