China know that Aircraft carriers are useless in Modern warfare, they are only good at attacking third grade country like Iraq and afganistan. They bought the old russian aircraft carrier to learn about technology and train their Navy. It will never be used for deployment.

@cr9527 Thats because the Soviets never designed a aircraftcarrier-killer missle like China did which is currently putting fear in the U.S. pacific navy.

I do not know why the soviets/russians lost interest in pacific warfare, maybe b/c of russia's past & current slow economy. For Russia, it is too expensive to build and maintain multiple large carriers, and yet still be outnumbered by U.S. and sadly U.S. is living on borrowed money from russia, china, etc.

1stly, Nobody pursued an AShBM because in a time of war against a nuclear power, if you even as much as launch a ballistic missile, it warrants a nuclear retaliation regardless of your target, and regardless of your warhead.

2ndly, Even according to the Chinese, a conventional Ballistic Missile cannot kill an aircraft carrier.

Theres no defense capable of defending a vertical dive missle at speeds of mach 10 especially when its launched from nearby. Not even a lasor could pin it

1. AShBM needs to be very accurate, atm, it isn't. It has a CEP of around 50-25 meters on a stationary target.

2. AShBM needs to have a very large warhead to KILL a carrier, which it doesn't. It carries around 2 Tons of warhead, and if you factor in the casing, it would only hold up to 1 ton of explosives. The US carriers have withstood far more than that in testing.

According to CCTV, which in this case I happen to agree with, the AShBM will at most do is punch a hole in the carrier's upper decks, and maybe destroy a few decks. The carrier won't be destroyed, but rather be temporarily out of service.

It maneuvers very little as demonstrated by their test against a stationary target. And US Standard Missiles have been employed to shoot down ballistic missiles, as well as a successful ASAT mission. all of which are in hypersonic speeds.

China can launch 100s of missles to destroy the fleet if its close enough (I'm assuming). It takes an aircraft carrier 30-days to repair its deck alone.

And also don't forget what happen in 2006 US kitty hawk carrier when a chinese sub slip through dozen warships and got close enough to launch a torpedo at the carrier. (Sorry for exage)

It is very difficult to spot a carrier, let alone track it. Keep in mind that you not only need a current position of the carrier, but you also need to maintain tracking. This is VERY difficult.

It was a stunt pulled by the USN. There was no logical reason for the Chinese sub to emerge after their stunt other than the fact that they were being harassed by the carrier group.

Keep in mind, the same kittyhawk ran over a Soviet Sub not long before this.

@cr9527 Well the only way to know for sure is a real war, which is unlikely unless a war erupts in korea again. The chinese would perhaps aid N.Korea with supplies & resources while U.S. S.Korea pushes up north near 20 miles from the chinese border. You know what happens from that point, maybe the event would repeat itself but the result maybe different this time. Good thing U.S. won't have mcarther again to push it.

@falcon010216 Aircraft carrier isn't just an attacking weapon, right now China is having trouble with it's sea because aircrafts cannot reach these places or cannot reach them in time to intercept or eliminate hostile targets, but with aircraft carrier, now chinese navy now effectively mobolise it's air control thus preventing neighour countries from taking advantage of china sea and air weak points. While not a great offensive weapon, carrier is excellent fort for Chinese defense.
