tonic = 1st note of the scale the chord is taken from. Basically, the name of the note... If Chord is C Major, tonic is C, etc.

it's cause the left hand really isn't a big problem... I play the tonics of the chord, which is the letter name of the chord.. So if you're playing A Major, you play an A or 2 on the left hand... E Minor, E... etc.

I do play it differently. First I teach the basic chord by chord, then I play it the way I would perform it in front of people (except simpler, because I don't normally sing and play the piano in performance).
