We're in an accelerating recession, arguably a depression. Things started spiraling out of control after oil reached over 130 a barrel.
Businesses contracted, total demand went down as the economy plummeted. OPEC producers agreed to cut down supply. Prices went back up again as a result causing more contractions. This is the falling side of peak everything and yet people still think Obama is gonna save us with more growth.
Use your very large, powerful brains for something besides a hat rack please, folks.
What's going to happen to the roads as tax revenues steadily decrease? You going to drive your little electric car offroad, through potholes the size of truck tires? What's the benefit of that when you can walk just as fast?
And what about building those electric cars, or manufacturing replacement parts for them, or delivering them to wherever it is that you live??
I keep thinking that local rubber trees would yeild, hopefully, enough to produce tires for bicycles. We can make bicycles from mostly wood. A little metal. Just go single speed and you're probably okay. Without air you'd have a rough ride, but air pumps mean other resources like metal alloys. I think that we're going back to Medieval society within our grandchildren's lifetimes.
Electric cars are manufactured using oil. The metals are taken out by oil powered machinery. The casing for the battery is oil based. The car is manufactured and assembled in various countries which means oil powered vehicles to move those parts around. The battery is then recharged by the electric grid which is over 60% oil powered.
Uranium would be a good interum, but even that has a peak. Renewable energy seems like a much better way to go. Solar, fusion, geothermal, wind, etc, seem like better alternatives if only because there would be no peak whatsoever - they would outlive humans.
But whatever. The more I thi8nk about it the more I think people will just eat themselves alive whether anyone likes it or not.
yeah, breeder reactors could be used until fusion becomes viable. Solar concerns me for reasons mentioned here. So does that habitat destruction of many other mass renewable.
Cool. I am glad you listened so many people just turn off and say no when they hear that n-word. Look up 'breeder reactors'.... 100's of years of fuel...
Then there are the economic costs to the US. Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz estimates the full cost of the invasion and attempted occupation of Iraq to be between $3 trillion and $5 trillion. The dollar price of oil and gasoline have tripled, and the dollar has lost value against other currencies, declining dramatically even against the lowly Thai baht. Before Bush launched his wars of aggression, one US dollar was worth 45 baht. Today the dollar is only worth 30 baht.
America = 5% or worlds population,= 20% of world energy consumption, non Kyoto agreement country

Two words: Local Economy

No, electric cars are in no way the answer.

I hate the fusion of people in these problems. peak oil people holding hands with people who think nuclear power is the devil.
Thorium Uranium 238->plutonium can provide energy with a peak in 200yrs time or so.

I used to this Nuclear was the solution too.
From the research I have seen , uranium has a peak from current usage, within 50-60 years. If we increase the usage, this will of course drop.
Uranium is not the solution. Not unless we can figure out fusion- but no one seems to have been able to do it so far.

@CmdrTobs then what?

@beastinblack Most likely nuclear fusion. Although it's experiential most if not all scientists regard nuclear fusion a technical certainty.
