This video has a particular significance for me because by great uncle took part in the liberation of Westerbork in April 1945 while fighting with the South Saskatchewan Regiment, 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. Westerbork is where the majority of the Dutch Jews along with Gypsies and captured resistance fighters were brought before deportation to Auschwitz and Sobibor. Anne Frank was sent to Westerbork before her deportation to Auschwitz in September 1944.

Red cross records show it was due to Allied Bombing of the transport infrastructure that stopped food and medicine getting through to the camps.

There were masive outbreaks of Typhus, TB and other diseases at the camps, Corpses were incinerated as a health precaution.
