I am/was honored to have interned with POWER during the summer. Getting to know the communities in the BayView/Hunters Point & The Mission further solidified my love for San Francisco. Witnessing the communities reaction to the death of Kenneth Harding, rabid gentrification (T-Line), & hearing the voices of people who feel the public transportation system is a system of inequality & bias towards the working class & communities of color. While MUNI managers are paid off & price hikes skyrocket.
MUNI prices go up while service decreases. People don't evade fare because it's fun, they do it because they can't afford it. The cost of living in this city is skyrocketing pushing low income people of color out of the city they call home.
@wildberryskittle sorry, but I still don't understand how black people, such as the ones in the Sunnydale projects constantly evade fares, even though they're raised by the gov., and they should have enough pocket change to afford a bus fare. And same thing for the chinese and the latino who do the same things too.
racial profiling is real. but the bigger issue here is the fact that many youth can't even afford to eat 3 meals a day (or even 1 for that matter). free fare for youth is a GREAT idea especially because MANY kids can only get to and from school on muni. good work POWER!
@jaye7star still don't really get that, cuz if you're a poor SFUSD student, you basically get 2 out of 2 meals for free each school day. And if those families really are that poor, they will get enough government aid, such as food stamps to survive. It's ONLY a $0.75 fare for kids. That's way less than what it costs for SFUSD meals.
Really? Racial profiling? If people want to get violent against fare inspectors, cops have to be there to make sure nobody gets hurt.
Also, yelling out racism when fare inspectors are out doing their jobs isn't right. They go to areas where evasion is high, not because they are targeting a certain ethnicity or income level. If people cheat Muni, it hurts every one of us who does pay.
@Akit317 I've witnessed fare enforcement on the T-Third and N-Judah and there is a huge difference. The hostility and lack of respect that the officers show on the T compared with the silent standing (as if they were security) on the N is racial profiling.
too bad It is impossible to get a drivers licence in this country. man, all these people driving their personal vehicles must be driving illegally???!??!?1
