I think the point for the fire on the arms was to show that his love for Kyomi (the woman) was so strong that not even fire could stop him from reaching her. He focused all of attention, his mind and his strength into reaching her. He felt pain like everyone else who died in the film from the fire. He just focused more on his love than on his pain.
