While I can imagine when Faye was writing the lyrics at that time, she was describing her insecurities about the relationship with Dou Wei; but probably "foretelling" Dou Wei's with "At that moment I discovered That one day I walked past you and didn't catch your gaze" is completely coincidental!!
hi etcmail2047! thank you for that wonderful description of this song/mv! I never thought of this song the way you did - "combine musical elements from the East and West". I guess I grew up listening to Faye' songs that I just took this style of hers, including her signature la~la~la~, for granted :P
I disagree with the way etcmail (who posted message) interpreted the lyrics. The lyrics are actually about the bitter-sweet, mixed feelings and insecurities one has before committing to a relationship or marriage or being in love Its actually a very sweet and romantic song.
I don't think internationally people realize how difficult it is to "have your own style" in the Hong Kong music scene. Whether Wang Fei is original or not matter little. The style worked, both musically and visually. She is very influential and has brought less known artists, such as the Cocteau Twins, to the Asian audience.
She probably sings in the shower. I heard she is pregnant again, baby due in April?
I am catching up to her works, a late start so to speak. Because in the USA she is unknown. But now I know about her and am probably her biggest fan on this continent!!!
this is my favourite song of faye. she expresses sorrows and anxieties seamlessly in this deceivingly light song (thx to dou wei's flute and faye's angelic vocals).
i'm al so a huge fan of Bjork. but i must stress that faye's music style is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. she's THE asia diva. timeless
she had the other version of Bjork swan dress in her budokan concert... so what? perhaps she's a fan of Bjork and she tried to introduce Bjorkism into the Eastern world.. there's nothing wrong to this...
anyway her musics are all that matters.. i cant imagine Bjork singing "Sky" or "Ambivalence" or "Wooden horse"
@twospade I think it's simply that her stylist was lazy and copied from Bjork. They copy a lot in Hong Kong. But the music is definitely original. And that's what matters.
Thanks for putting this video on YouTube, etcmail2047. It's a great song! Thanks also for the explanation & lyrics. All these years of listening to her lovely voice, to be able to understand her pain is a sad but loving thing. Do you have any other of Faye's songs from "SKY"? I love that CD - it's my favorite of hers ... unfortunately, my SKY CD is packed away & I don't have access to it, so I can't hear my favorite Faye songs. Oh well, thanks again!
From her voice, I find strength and creativity for myself.. :) All ways love her. I truly believe that one's idol would have an great impact one's life. Especially the way of thinking and values.
It's absurd to blame Faye for the Bjork ripoff. She is, or was anyway, a creative genius. The fact that her handlers and producers were slavishly aping Western pop to make a buck certainly wasn't her fault - her career was just taking off and she had little control of her 'image' at that time.
the problem is Faye's people were adamant on having her lift an image and she chose Bjork to a "T"... AND it's blatant. It shouldn't take away from the brilliance of her music though. As she matured... her image changed.

This supposed 'classic' video is total rip off of Bjork. Not only hair, but whole 'singer acts kooky on streets'. Add a truck and you've got video for 'Big Time Sensuality', which came out about a year previous, I believe. Typical Hong Kong, even the cool stuff is a rip off of much cooler stuff from the west. And Bjork is still making original music, whereas poor old WF is trapped in HK celebrity-tabloid hell, it seems.
Typical HK..not bad song or video (kind of great song in fact), but video is bad fudge job of Wong Kar-wai movies and Bjork - not only hairstyle, but whole of video, clearly aping vid for 'Big Time Sensuality' which was about a year old at the time. Substitutes 'kooky singer on truck' for 'kooky singer on foot' is all. Typical HK, the only cool stuff is stealing cool stuff from the west.

but she should have her own style, but no more Bjork, Cocteau Twins or Dolores of cranberries...

She never liked Bjork. She only covered ONE song from Cranberries and that's almost 15 years ago.
Yeah she loved Cocteau Twins but she has already moved on long time ago.
