The benefits for hammock camping is how lightweight your pack is and the comfort is second to none. You can also make your own gear you just have to get the material. I think everyone should practice and camping just in case they need emergency shelter. You can carry a big deer in the car and it will be there when you need it.
Check out my website for the best kydex sheath you can reasonably buy. I do ALL my work without electric tools, if you buy now you get a free add-on (a ten dollar value)
Iv'e got discounts for double orders and reviews.
I do not make my living off of this so i can assure great prices, and i've got all the time in the world for your sheath.
I upload videos to youtube.com with the detailed steps in making YOUR sheath, not someone else's.
I use a Hennessey... Tom Hennessey is always showing them at "Trail Days" in Damascus. I like a hammock with a bug net and a rain fly. They are lighter than most tents and when you get ready to sleep all you have to do is find two trees. Flat spots are a little harder to find. There is a learning curve to getting in and out but once you are situated they are comfy. I was after a tent first but couldn't find the weight at a fair price at the time (3 years ago). Stayed dry in a bad storm...amazing.
when looking for a hammock, I started looking at cultures where hammock sleeping is the norm, and ended up getting myself an Amazon hammock and a bug cocoon. It works equally well from trees while out camping and on a stand in my house as my permanent bed.
Just got a parachute hammock, cant wait for the warmer weather...
I plan to do a couple of thru hikes leaving my tent behind for the first time...setting my hammock up just like this I will suspend a poncho over top giving myself a pup tent/hammock set up. The whole thing should be very lightweight and take up less space than my tent in my sack.
I think they're great but I'd like to be up higher. I know it's a farther fall if it breaks but I don't need bears fuckin with me in the middle of the night. Take care of it and tie it right, you'll be fine.
Hennessy Hammocks are extremely comfortable and give a nice support since they are crafted so you are laying on the bias. They have a bug net and a rain fly, and you enter them from the bottom which gives more stability. Hammock sleeping is so much nicer than ground sleeping.
Just a safety warning, hammocks are awesome, but they result in about 10 deaths in the US every year, because small kids get into them and end up falling with the hammock wrapped around their necks. If you look at the setup, its basically not different from a rope strung between two trees, so its obviously kind of dangerous.
If you have a hammock, just replace it with a more sturdy hammock with two crossbars on each side, and it'll be 1000% safer around small kids.
Yeah but there are people who die from not guying out there tents properly and end up having themselves blown into a lake or, worse, off a cliff in the middle of the night. And really, 10 people a year.... They would have recalled hammocks in America if 10 kids were killed a year. Hammocks are just as safe as tents.
No, sorry. I should have been more clear. If you search Google for "hammock recall", you can get a bunch of media coverage and the full story.
The problem is that hammocks without a crossbar can fold in on itself - making what is essentially a loose rope hanging between two trees. If you accidentally were to get tangled in that, it can on rare occasions end up wrapped around someones neck and causing strangulation. The main risk is small kids who aren't big enough to save themselves.
Ive seen people make hammocks out of fabric instead of netting..which would be more comfy, safer, and cheaper..thats what I plan to do for my biking/hiking/camping trips
the kind hes useing is the kind that can kill ya their more comfortable than the ones with the braces on the ends but thye braces keepem from strangling ya in your sleep
Hammacks are great if you have the right type/size for your body. When in doubt, ground mat, sleeping bag and army basher. JOB DONE!. far too many toys for the bush my friend. go hard or go home.
dude... get a Claytor, Clark, ENO, Hennessy, or a Travel Hammock and you'll never have to "change your mind and sleep on the ground" again. Visit Jacks R Better to see the under-hammock insulation that is bar none out of this world.
@survivalistboards are the parachute hammocks more comfortable then this kind? i have a net type old ary hammock, and i think its cofortable, but was thinking about trying a paracute hammock.
To sleep comfortably in a hammock: 1. Use a solid bottom hammock that has wooden dowls at the ends to hold the hammock open 2. Place between trees that are 25-35 feet apart. 3. Use "static" rope (little stretch) 4. very tightly, tie the ropes at 4-5 feet high on the trunk. You will notice that the arc radius is much greater than when tied between close trees. Bonus Tip: try tying the hammock at a level where only your butt touches the ground. PS - I have slept over 300 nights in a hammock.
Whats with the "I'll have my torch and rifle by my side" or as cditpx writes: "You zip it up and no bug's get in has a little pocket that fits a pistol"... hell, you're not camping in a war zone! I camp in bear country yet I'v never had the need to sleep with a weapon.
War Zone? You crack me up. There are countless reasons to have a firearm present. Weapons are just like any tool. You may not always need it, but when you need one, nothing else will do.
Mosquito hammocks allow you to turn on your side it don't have all the little diamonds in it I weigh 320 have had back surgery and slept well in my multi night test. You zip it up and no bug's get in has a little pocket that fits a pistol. The mosquitoes could get you on the lower side but I just hit it with deet and that was history. The Clark hammocks seem to be better but they are too proud and acted like fat people don't deserve to use their product so I passed on them.
haha, why did you decide to sleep on the ground? hammack a lil uncomfy sometimes if you like to sleep in your side. ive been considering buying a DD HAMMOCK. i'll probly just stick to my tent and sleeping bag though

another choice would be a bat hammock. One sturdy limb vs two smaller trees. Love your vids btw

Never thought this was very light weight but it sure seems to be and a real advantage in wet-ground weather. Thanks for showing it.

I've never seen a backpacking hammock with a crossbar. You mean like the backyard woven hammocks? Those are the only one that I know of.
