If that “planet”' had a diameter similar to earth's ( ≈ 12,800 km) then the “planet” would be 2.7 million kilometers away from the earth. The closest a known planet ever gets to the earth is 54.6 million kilometers (Mars at its closest). That means if your “planet” was about the size of the earth, it would be 20X closer to the earth than mars.

The images are taken by the SDO satellite which well is inside the orbit of the SOHO satellite's orbit and the moon[ hence, it's view is not uninterrupted like that of the SOHO]. If this was not the Moon (which it is) it would still be just as close to us as the Moon and therefore would be visible to the naked eye right now. Why are you spreading assumptions about things you don't understand?

The base of his triangle is the diameter of the sun times the fraction of that you think the object covers. The smaller similar triangle height is the distance from earth to the object. The base of the small triangle is the diameter of the object.

@MrTerry428 You even said it yourself; "aia". The AIA (Atmospheric Imaging Assembly) is used by SDO, which orbits Earth. If this was not the Moon (which it is) it would still be just as close to us as the Moon and therefore would be visible to the naked eye right now. You don't know how the science works in regards to that particular filter, so you automatically assume it must an atmosphere for some reason. Why are you spreading assumptions about things you don't understand?

I just corresponded with Dr. Phillips at NASA who confirmed that this is the moon passing between SDO (stationary orbit at 22,000 miles) and the sun. I ran a moon orbit simulator and confirmed the position to be accurate.
Pretty interesting to see though.
