I took mine apart cleaned it out and put it back together but it still freezes up and gets hot very fast when im downloading data in it. Sometimes it shuts off and i see a yellow light flash them a blinking red light or it just stays froze. Do u know what that might be i can fix ???
@GoldRush071 You're getting the "Yellow Light Of Death" slowly but surely. There are videos on how to fix this using a heat gun you can buy from iFixit for not a lot of money. (Before that, a good heat gun would cost like $70!)
@junker15 Cut the traces? Well ok then I can remove the antenna wire. Then cut the traces for the other one. Sorry I'm so unfamiliar with that. What exactly are the traces?
@junker15 thanks for your reply but unfortunately that won't do. I need to manually remove (physically) the wifi from the unit. Maybe that long antenna wire can be permanently removed?
I have an original USA 60GB PS3. Is it possible for the PS3 still play games with the wifi & Bluetooth radios circuit board taken out? I know strange question. But I absolutely need this unit no longer have wifi or Bluetooth (wifi especially) anymore. Disabling them in settings won't cut it. As an alternative what if I permanently disconnected the wifi antenna? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
@tonytonytony3t I don't think removing the bluetooth is a good idea, because I believe that's what the controllers use (maybe even when connected via USB, but I haven't tested that). A better way to make wi-fi unusable is to grab its MAC address and add it to a list of addresses in your AP that are denied access (or remove it from the allowed list if you do MAC filtering that way).
(Of course that doesn't prevent the PS3 from connecting to another AP...)
@Cleonn100 The PSU is held in with 5 screws, I believe. At least one tends to hide itself under the ground wire. Once you get all the screws removed, it should just pull straight up.
@TheLurker18 This is unlikely. The actual electronics aren't affected by a magnetic field. It's more probable that the trouble is at the wi-fi router as most home routers aren't very robust.
I think I fragged my wifi some how. Lets just say that I was using a tape player by my ps3 and My wifi hasn't worked since. Yes I said tape player. any idea. think it could be the card?
I'm having trouble with the wire at 0:40 . It doesn't have little handles like the others do, and i don't want to yank the wires right out, but gently tugging isn't getting me any progress here. It's not a special human-prrof wire is it? Is there a little lock on it I'm missing? Thank you.
The grey and black wires coming out of the side of the drive? These can withstand a bit of tugging, but if you're not comfortable with that, a small flathead screwdriver can be used to ease the connector out of the socket. It tends to be a tight fit.
All versions that originally came with the 40GB drive have a different mainboard layout that doesn't have the connector for the card reader. Also, the hard drive was reoriented in the 40GB version, so you probably won't be able to use the bottom shell from a 60GB unit.
HI! great video! I got a question, do you know if it his possible to use a 60GB ps3 case on a 40GB ps3(components)? Like is it posible to conect the Card reader to the Ps3? I think it´s impossible to connect the 4 usbs , cause they are on the mobo... please reply! thanks...

@tonytonytony3t That only removes the rear antenna. On the bottom of the wi-fi board is the front wi-fi antenna, which is surface-mounted on.
Of course, there is the option of cutting the traces to both wi-fi antennas...

I think I fragged my ps3 wifi using a tape player by accident. Yes I said a tape player. is this possible? could a magnet affect a wifi board?

sorry about that last comment

Wait, I have an 80gb right. Well lately it flashed a red light after playing GTA4. It flashes the light. This is an indication of overheating right?
LordMoron 2 years ago
This is probably an overheat issue of some sort. I believe the flashing red light indicates hardware failure.
junker15 2 years ago
So its not YLOD right?
LordMoron 2 years ago
It could be the YLOD issue, as that almost always seems to happen as a result of overheating.

Can't put the internal card reader into later revisions of the mainboard. The connector for that has been removed.
